Topic: Why can't we set up 2FA on this forum? It would be a good idea. (Read 315 times)

Due to a couple of reasons:

If someone wants to write a patch for it, I will seriously consider adding it. I believe that safely adding 2FA would be very time-consuming, so I'm not willing to do it myself or direct Slickage to do it.

2FA is apparently fairly difficult to integrate into SMF (the current forum software).

2FA is going to be implemented in EpochTalk. I suppose we'll all be able to use it once the forum software has been replaced:

This is enough explanation for the reason why there is no 2FA now, and a sound reason also to hope on the future introduction of 2FA when the new program is launched. And this dates back to 2014!! Be patient and don't be clicking the phishing links that could compromise your account.

My old account (jacobmayes94) was hacked and used for spam and was banned,
Lets assume the above statement is correct although many claims like these are usually false. A forum user foresaw this problem and created a solution to it. You can stake your bitcoin address here and in case of hack, you can
just create a new account then sign a message from the address that your original account staked, and have proof that you're the actual owner of account. Then account might be recovery instead of it been banned. The forum is already getting complicated admin shouldn't complicate it more by adding a 2FA. This will cause the meta board to be flooded with new topic from the careless one of misplaced google authenticator code bla bla bla.

Well I did contact the ban appeals address and signed a message from here: 1JacobtFpSMx15iKNR2xmPuDLqRVYM9NWc

That was used with my old account. No luck. I did this a while ago on this thread: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/account-hacked-banned-jacobmayes94-2474078

I wasn't able to get a response from the admins, though I understand they are busy.

EDIT: I have contacted cyrus again, to see if i can have this account recovered.

Thanks for your replies guys.

So anyway, I applied as a merit source :)
It would be good idea to have some extra layer of security like 2FA.
It defenitely would be good to have 2FA. This is one of the biggest cryptocurrency related forums in the world and it has no 2FA. Blame falls on both side not just the administrators but also the members who are naive enough to click phishing links. Blame google to index those phishing websites and mirrors.

The problem is we spend too much time in ranting about the issue when the solution is right in front of your hands  Tongue :

1. Bookmark the correct bitcointalk URL to their browsers which they commonly use.
2. Update their browsers and remove useless addons.
3. Set up a strong password and keep it safe. Dont reuse the same password on other sites.
4. Do not put any secret question.

I forgot more than you will ever know.

I hear a lot about that new forum coming.

Does anyone have details about progress, ETA, or functionalities?
And why the migration is not just made to another existing forum engine?

Set up 2FA on this forum may make logins more cumbersome, we only need to be careful to avoid phishing sites and unsafe links, our account will be safe.
I believe that most accounts are stolen due to clicks on unsafe links.

Why don't you bump share your idea or opinion on an old thread? Will not it look better? This topic has been discussed thousands of times and it's really annoying to have a new thread again.

2FA on bitcoin talk
Two Factor Authentication On Bitcointalk
Isn't it time to introduce 2FA to enhance user account security ?
2fa on bitcointalk

Some others?

Please, Google before making a repetitive suggestion.

Can bitcointalk.org get 2 factor authentication? (2013)
Why doesn't Bitcointalk support 2FA? (2016)

I always have and always will use 2FA on accounts. This forum however does not give the option. My old account (jacobmayes94) was hacked and used for spam and was banned, was gutted. While the machine I was using got compromised no other online accounts get compromised because I was using 2FA apart from the jacobmayes94 account and one other forum account where 2FA was not present, also coins were safe due to using HW wallets.

If google authenticator 2FA could be set up for this forum, it would be an extra layer of security.
