To justify premining it! Also once someone has the wallet thy will more more inclined to support the coin.

Why not just keep them for yourself?

You pose an interesting and legitimate question. There are both altruistic and egoistic reasons to do a giveaway.

The altruistic reason is that you want to share with others. You feel good about donating to a large amount of people, what it essentially amounts to pennies each, and see them appreciate the gift.

The egoistic, or generally speaking, more strategic reasons are:

  • More people will install the wallet. If you are a developer or heavy supporter of the coin, this is a cheap way to get people to play with your coin.
  • More people have coin X -> More interest in the coin.
  • More people have coin X -> More people are willing to vote for the coin to go on an exchange.

In short, it's cheap publicity wrapped in an act of kindness. Everybody wins.

Why not just keep them for yourself?

If they're heavily invested in the coin, and the coin is quite inflated, then;

A) It raises the profile of the coin they've mined, and therefore increases the likelihood it will end up on an exchange so they can profit from it. Or, if it's already on an exchange, increase its value;
B) They can afford to.

Or perhaps they just want to raise their credibility on the forum.

They want to promote their coin, the more people know about it, participate in it, and keep a wallet going the more chances that the coin will get picked up and traded heavily and then it is worth some real money.

Make sense? By the way, Go Earthcoin!!! Send some my way, mining that thing is impossible. eoXDWgwcMAQTTqFtYe1vNQhXyNzQ7n6gYG

Why do people hand out free products in the street? Promotion, getting the product out there, in use, into circulation.

In terms of cryptocoins, its a chance for people who don't mine/don't know how to also get involved and trade the currency.

The people who give away are usually part of the dev team

Or folks that have mined a lot or crypto speculators, any one that wants the coin to get widespread and get attention

Because they want people to get in to that specific coin. I personally never go for them as it is really a waste of time...unles I already have the wallet, and it's a decent coin.
