Does anyone know why this is? The domain registrar that I'm most familiar with is GoDaddy and in fact, they do the exact opposite by giving huge discounts to first year registrations but then pricing them at a more normal level in the years after. So for instance, a .com domain could be purchased for $0.99 with a code but you can't renew a domain for $0.99. Renewal coupons do exist but rarely do they save over 30% of the standard price.

The above strategy makes sense in that people could register a domain for cheap and spend a year building their website up so that it becomes popular and valuable. By then, they should easily be able to afford the renewal fee in the second year. People can also breathe easy knowing that if their startup is a failure, they would have only lost a dollar or two. But it also means that people are unlikely to sign up for multiple years. In fact, those who do so are disadvantaged since they won't be able to take advantage of renewal coupons.

Does anyone why this is and if there are any domain registrars that do offer discounts for multiple years? For well established sites, renewing domains is a hassle I'd rather not deal with but I'd rather not have to pay extra for the privilege either.
