The way you are going, you'll be the first LAMP (Legendary Awarded Merit Points) - that's the new elite group of Legendaries that have earnt their ranking, and not just got it as a result of posting volume.
I just came to say hello.

(on topic: I do appreciate the way Tman approaches spending their sMerit. Should they run out, I wouldn't mind taking over or supplying them with new ones)

I should be a source as it's fun giving it away to newbies.. I should make the effort to make a thread..

Thanks guys. I'm not too bothered about the points actually, as long as I've got enough to say "thank you" to people who help me, then I'll be happy. I don't want to become a merit faucet with all the problems that will go with that.  I really hope that the serious discussion boards will start to become more popular, and that the merit system will encourage this.

Oh dear! It looks as if that thread has been deleted.. I'm def. not a candidate to be a merit faucet. But I would like a way to say thank you to people who help me to improve my use of Bitcoin.

Now what has happened to the two merit points I gave - do I get them back, or have they gone forever?
You don't get them back. Even if the posts gets deleted afterwards. Just kook at your merit history:

Code:
Today at 07:17:57: 1 to InvestorBelarus for (Deleted/Off-limits/Ignored)
Today at 07:17:30: 1 to InvestorBelarus for (Deleted/Off-limits/Ignored)

Maybe they should be revoked if the post gets deleted by a mod?

Those two are not deducted from your merit points. You have additional Smerits that you can send to others. Once spent, those Smerits will not return. Also, you get one Smerit for every 2 merits you get from other members.

As others have already stated, the first post is a copy-paste of the announcement theymos posted.
The 2nd post is a copy/paste from https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.28874150

And the guy posted this copy-paste on 3 different subforums. IMO, not a great example of posts worth merit.

cant win them all bud.. there are always going to be ones that slip through....

But - on the flip side, it was a quality post (nicked we know!) that clears up any questions in a sub that is frequented by non English speakers..

not justifying it - but its not necessarily a bad thing to give him some props if it stops a load of badly written posts coming in here

Thinking about this a little more... from a completely objective standpoint, maybe this was a post worth merit. I mean if you are just looking for a high quality post, this would have appeared to be one... even though it was copy/pasted. With irreversible spends of sMerits, this type of thing is likely to happen on occasion so I'm not sure it would be fair to hold merit ratings against anyone, no hard feelings from me!  Smiley

By not linking to sources he essentially plagiarised the content. You guys rewarded him, but don't blame you. You can't expect everyone to investigating every post before sending merits.

I guess some option for the mods to reverse merits (upon request) sent to copy/pasters would be useful.

OK, so maybe I got that wrong. I found the thread as a result of using the search function, and no other related threads showed up on the first page. So maybe thart is a feature that could be improved.

It also illustrates the saturation and obfuscation that results from the proliferation of multiple similar threads. Maybe a bit of thread merging would help to clear the boards so that we can find topics. I hoped that the serious discussion boards would help to improve things, but maybe too many serious discussers have left the forum for it to be viable.

I think this is the most useful thread about the merit system
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/--2825913

The English is good, and it is clear and very much to the point.

So where is ths thread located? - it's in the Indian sub-forum. Doesn't that tell you something about the evolution of the frog pond and other main boards on BitcoinTalk.

you are correct.. he got a merit off me.

his English is probably better than mine, but he is the exception not the rule..

I'm missing something...

Your topic says: "Why I don't want to be a merit source." but what you posted actually suggests otherwise - being Merit Source would be good for you, as you'd be getting regular merit points for distribution and you'll have more power to reward whatever you like. If you temporarily run out of points, you could just reward that reply later.

The idea is that points should trickle down from Merit Sources to all constructive members and side-line spammers and farmed accounts. So even when you go empty on your initial points, you should eventually get some from others.

? He just copy/pasted Theymos' posts and posted in Indian.

Why do you guys send him merits?

What is going on in here? Am I missing sarcasm or something?

Jesus, this is testament to the fact how broken the merit system already is.
You are praising this guys posts as "an evolution of the frog pond" and are
commenting on how good his English is.

On top you are awarding him with merit points.

InvestorBelarus:

Meanwhile his post is a blatant copy&paste of this post by SM23031997:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.28874150

Just compare the two posts and you will find out that you have
rewarded a cheap plagiarism with merit points.
This user should not be praised, he should be banned or at least
receive negative trust.

I looked at the top 50 topics that have received merit points, and you can check them here.

I think those stats are going to be unreliable for a while as people play with the system.

A quick scan didn't reveal any posts about Bitcoin, and I thought that this was the primary topic for this forum. I would like to have the ability to thank someone who makes a helpful and constructive post in response to a query by me, but it looks as if when my initial allowance runs out, then I won't be able to do this. Lets take an example -

I want to maintain the blockchain on an external drive, and I start a thread about the difference between SSD and rotating hard drives for blockchain storage. I'm not sure that starting the thread deserves a merit point, but in my opinion an informed response covering reliability, storage life and transfer speeds does deserve a merit point. Because I've used all my allowance, I'm not able to thank the poster with a nerit point or two. His reply may not be noticed by the merit sources, as the topic is of limited interest, and I suspect tht most points will be awarded in the frog pond, and this board is completely unusable for me.

Wish granted. Smiley

You are right that currently there are not much posts about Bitcoins there. Most of the posts are related to merit system. This will not last forever.

This will evolve, when all the moaning noobs have been corrected then the merit system will fall out to the rest of the forum..  it will take weeks though
