domain .io used for internet company, and i think cryptocurrency part of internet business and finance, so that's why many project used .io domain, CMIIW

2.Creative Top Level Domain

.tv = used for online television
.me = is used for personal branding projects
.expert = used to convey our authority to a specific matter
.guru = the function is the same as .expert
.io = is used for companies related to technology
.name = is used for special websites that serve each individual
.Bit = Binary Digit is digital telecommunications as well, all voltage levels are converted to binary data

3. Restricted Top Level Domain

.post = used by the post office
.gov = used for government sectors
.mil = used for websites related to the military
.museum = used by museums and related industries
.aero = used for the aerospace industry

Yeah .io is the most popular domain name for ICO projects. I think because the io is similar with the word ICO. It make we feel the project more professional and we will invest in it. I don't like .bit domain name, it's not popular, very few sites use .bit domain.

as far as I know IO is an abbreviation for Input/Output, So I think .IO is a better domain for crypto projects because crypto projects are related to technology and Input/Output is suitable for them

But I can believe it to be their wishes because some projects do use .com
While most prefers .io
