It definitely is open source just see their github repos it's full of their source code waiting to be forked by some people and there's nothing to hide. Even how ETH gonna be developed depends on consensus meaning on top of being open source it's decentralized also being controlled by the community who use the coin itself.
just try to get a glimpse of their github repo: https://github.com/ethereum and see the pull request. Also, vitalik is actively reviewing the pull request (his last review was this month) and the ETH repo was supposed to be contributed by various people so yeah he might not stick out as much.

Thank you guys so much, I was a little confuse as to why I couldn't find the source code but I guess I didn't dig deep enough. Btw I'm new here and I'm already loving this community. Everyone here is so friendly and approachable
