giving shittokens has always been one of the very common ways of attracting attention. they always did "giveaways" of their useless tokens. that is now evolved into a process with a name and they call it "airdrop". in fact it is a distribution method of these tokens and a way for the developer to hide the fact that he is owning a very large amount of said token and will dump it on the market to get rich for doing nothing.

Limited in number. Limitless in potential.

Airdrop always depends on what currency is based. Most probably they are Ethereum - ERC20 based that's why you cant see it on your Bitcoin balance. And you can see it on the details of the airdrop if what currency it is based. But most airdrops are useless and ship coins and sometimes they don't have any price.

Airdrop depends in the concept by the Developer. Some are giving free token thru bounty. But now many are SHITCOINS use airdrop for the easy money. but some of Airdrop is very successful. depends on the developer
If many people use airdrop services then other project projects will be less useful because most people already use airdrop every day or every week to make money easily, So I think airdrop must be eliminated let the people who have keproject fakus already provided.

I don`t remember having airdrops for my BTC balance until 2017. Why did they not have any before? What changed in the system?
Check this thread, for a list of airdrops from 2016:

There`re 300 pages of messages in this thread.
Nope. I won`t be reading those

I just wish there was a clear list of all airdrops that has happened for your BTC balance

This is a really difficult question to answer, maybe the whale launchers were created and promoted in 2017. These are my thoughts and opinions.

There were a lot of airdrops before 2017 as well. But since the price of BTC was not that high, people were not much bothered. Check this thread, for a list of airdrops from 2016:

And if I am not mistaken, the first crypto airdrop was in 2014 (Auroracoin).

Before it's not called airdrop, it's like give-away or some sort of free coins. There's a forum rule about these give-aways. Up until the word airdrop becomes the new name of this give-away this year and from then on, every single day so much airdrops of altcoins, eth tokens or waves assets are launched to attract the community. Of course, more than half of them are just pump and dump ones, for fast cash so to speak. So if you haven't caught the right timing of selling those, you will end up hodling worthless assets.
