The forum was originally located at bitcoin.org/smf, then later forum.bitcoin.org, then finally bitcointalk.org.

There's still quite a few hits to the old /smf links.

I've set up a redirect so that old /smf links don't break anymore (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2551731).

I imagine that the name Bitcointalk was chosen simply because it is an anagram of Titian Block Tongue

Bitcoin.com  had been registered by mark karpeles long before the starting of btc, and this website was started by theymos and this was the only good domain available

bitcoin.com existed before the Bitcoin software/currency was created. It was owned by an unrelated company. bitcoin.org (and bitcoins.org and bitcoin.net) was registered by Satoshi for Bitcoin.

I didn't even know about Bitcoin when this forum was first created!

I believe U chose the name and it is inspired by WebHostingTalk, the largest web hosting discussion forum on the internet.
Ok got it, and my guess would be Atlas   Tongue

Nope.

Nope.

Looks like Bitcoin.com is no more owned by any unrelated company. It is owned by Roger Ver of BlockChain.info. Rather bitcointalk.com is owned by people who are bad naming this forum.

The forum was originally located at bitcoin.org/smf, then later forum.bitcoin.org, then finally bitcointalk.org. IIRC, Satoshi left before the forum was moved from bitcoin.org/smf. The name "BitcoinTalk" was not invented by Satoshi, Sirius, Gavin, justmoon, or myself. I wonder if anyone here can guess who came up with the name? Smiley

You just made me very, very curious!
I was under the assumption that Satoshi picked the name, either by himself, or alongside theymos and Sirius.

the t in talk also corresponds with the T in temptation.
T also stands for triboluminescence, what's your point?
PS: for a list of weird words starting with the letter t, here ya go: http://phrontistery.info/t.html

Bitcoin.com was registered in early 2008, and Bitcointalk wasn't registered until 2011, I'm pretty sure there is no special significance to the name Bitcointalk, other than its a place for people to talk about Bitcoin. Bitcoinforum is kind of long and doesn't sound quite as good.

ok, gotcha

So, about 14.53434 seconds ago, I thought, why did Satoshi choose the name bitcointalk.org for the forum? Why couldn't it be, bitcoin.com, or bitcoinforum.org, or some unique name?

bitcointalk seems odd, could it be a conspiracy? Talk usually stands for speaking, and the t in talk also corresponds with the T in temptation.

Does the name bitcointalk have a hidden meaning, such as Bitcoin temptation? Could be similar to how the U.S dollar has that eye annd pyramid on it..

Very odd..very odd..
