I find your lack of faith in Bitcoin disturbing.
3 Reasons Why The NO 120 Is Important On The forum

120 can be the number of days/weeks/months/years of ban you can take to send an unsolicited PM. I didn't report your PM, but if you sent the same kind of PM to other people, there may be a problem.

Spoiler alert : god does not exist.

The post is well written, but the topic holds no excitement.

120 is just a number. If you have the ability to represent yourself, then I say go for the number 0.

if you don't hit the rock bottom, you can't climb up.

Merits and activity doesn't make me excited. One thing that does is BTC.

you are a creative person because you want to take the time to explore the little things in the forum. when other people think this (number 120) is not important. But you make it a little bit meaningful according to your version. I always appreciate people who want to see the little things. Because big things don't exist if you don't start with small things.
this will stimulate others to do the same and follow your lead.

4 thumbs up for you  Grin

120days which is another way of saying approximately 3months.
If you print this post, you can use it to ask your tuition back.

As for why the number 120 represents a quarter of a year, which is usually a measure of activity by divide year into 4.
Free tuition for you too!

Edit

important to pay attention to in my opinion. It might be a random choice, but who knows?
Shows you didn't bother to read what other posters had to say before commenting, Loyce V just mentioned it in his post before yours, the sole purpose of 120 days was to reduce server loads. Other third party site(Bpip) have data going back more than 120 days, and so on...

Many of signature campaigns ask for the users who wish to apply the number of merits the received in the last 120 days and of course when one takes a look at one's profile (on the merit section) one can see the history of the merits we all received within this period of time. Now, would not be great if above the total history of merits there was a summation of all those merits received/sent?

I have found myself in the situation where I counted those merits manually before applying to a campaign  Roll Eyes

As you are already aware about how to have the stats for your merit information through bpip.org and you could check the other information also like total posts, deleted by moderators and your rank on the forum as well and you can also check the same for other members also on it.So now you don't need to manually count it now  Wink

You have followed yourself by thinking about something that is not worthy of attention, for example, not all campaigns ask you to participate in the number of Merits you have earned in 120 days, and who did this with the main purpose of that is making sure of your activity during the recent period and making sure that the style of writing has not changed with the acquisition of those Merits.
Yeah that's not giving more focus on according to me as well as the number 120 is random but you can say @theymos found it baseline so he might have choose this number in IQ prank also but not much of attention towards it.

For the signature campaign not all of them have these requirements for past 120 days but the reputed mangers have this criteria setup to check the users have that post quality for the selection and yes their posting style nothing else as there is no fixed criteria for the campaign manager.

No, 120 is a third of a year in the sense that 120= 30 x 4 months.  Wink

I don't know why theymos chose the number 120 in some stats, but it's not really that important to pay attention to in my opinion. It might be a random choice, but who knows?

USERS FORUM STATISTICS
This is quite another way the number 120 plays a role on the forum, because as an active forum member, a user’s account statistics is always given in reference to the past 120 days, which gives a summary information about the user’s performance, merit sent and received within that period of time.
That limitation is meant to reduce server load.
Here you go: https://bitcointalk.org/merit.txt.xz

Similar to trust.txt.xz, it'll be updated weekly. It will show only the last 120 days of data; someone else should archive the old ones if you want them.

So in conclusion, these are but a few ways I personally observed how the number 120 plays some significant role on the forum.
It indeed seems like theymos likes to use 120 (more or less 4 months) for forum limits.

I'm now curious who user 120 was Cheesy

If you don't want to deal with extensions, simply bookmark your BPIP profile page > https://bpip.org/Profile?p=Hispo.

It shows you all the merit information you could need:
  • Total number of earned and sent merits, including the posts and users that got merited/merited you.
  • Number of earned merits in the last 30, 90, 120, or 150 days.
  • On the right side you can see who merits you the most and which users get the most sMerits from you.

I haven’t taken a look at it myself, but if you are willing to install an extension to your browser, then bpip seems to have the solution, and probably has that information very fresh (i.e. unlike the Merit Dashboard, where I update the data weekly). (*)

On the topic of the number 120, it could well have been a very significant number here on the forum:

In order to improve the overall forum experience, going forward we are only going to allow smart people to post. To determine your intelligence, you will be required to answer a question every time you post (or edit your post). Your answers will be used to calculate your IQ, and starting next week, everyone with an IQ below 120 will be banned.

Let's make Bitcointalk.org into the ivory tower of excellence that it was always meant to be!

Since we are taking about the number 120 and its significance to the forum here, I'd like to bring a suggestion onto the table.

I am aware that there are some webpages which show statics of individual users, but I am yet to find one that explicitly summarizes the merits I have accumulated in 120.

I agree with yahoo62278, the number 1 is more important than the number 120. The importance of numbers varies under different circumstances. For example, if a user needs 1 merit or 1 activity to upgrade next rank then number 1 is important for him. Those need 10 then that number is important for him. I think this way number works. And yes, number 1 is very important when you join the forum. Your first post describes many things. However, you can contribute to the forum always, so that any numbers will not be hard for you to achieve.

Do you know any significant figure about the forum you have noticed and will love to share?
120 is the ideal number of days to find out the forum stats of each user in my opinion. But I agree with @ETFbitcoin, 120 is a random number chosen by theymos for several things including one of them is determining the activity required to rank up to Full Member. I don't find much more reason to say why 120 is an important number on this forum, so don't focus too much on things that might not mean much to your quality improvement especially knowledge.

ACCESS TO THE FULL FORUM FEATURES
Full Member is 120, of which gives you access to the complete forum features, such as posting images, wearing signature and avatar, e.t.c. So that makes the number 120 unique and important on the forum because without that these features can’t be access.
You don't need to be full member to post images as there are two options for the same like first one is you need to be junior member which requires 30 activity and only 1 merit and it will take more than month of active posting to reach that activity level and second one is going through Copper membership that usually projects that want to advertise on the forum go through.

So for signature campaign they are mostly for Full rank and above ranks but yes there are some for junior members also but the difference is signature space so you can't say it as restrictions. The number 120 is not distinctive as per my knowledge.

REQUIREMENT FOR CAMPAIGNS
Another place this number 120 plays a big role on the forum is when it comes to campaigns, because to most campaigns, one basic requirement always needed to join has always been, how many merits were you able to gained within the past 120 days. That is, now using the number ‘’120’’ as now a timeframe for measuring one’s eligibility with reference to merit earned.
That's right as most of the signature campaign has the requirements of specified earned merits in past 120 days as it helps you to evaluate the performance of members as if they have managed to earn merits over four months of period or not.Not too much focus for 120 days as you are specifying.

USERS FORUM STATISTICS
This is quite another way the number 120 plays a role on the forum, because as an active forum member, a user’s account statistics is always given in reference to the past 120 days, which gives a summary information about the user’s performance, merit sent and received within that period of time.
Mostly the forum statistics are for 120 days for every user but you can check them for more days also as it's available on https://bpip.org/ for each member you can check for. There are profile information for the forum members you can check past 120 days also so this is not correct also.

If you buy a Copper Membership you can then post pictures as a newbie. The other features like accessing the signature panel can only happens after you become a Jr Memeber. I don't think the number 120 has a significance in accessing the forum features as there are options available for it. I still loved reading your post but such post won't have any big significance on this board.

The only number in this forum that really matters is 1. 1 referring to the person controlling the account they logged in from. That person makes the decision to be the person they will be. Whether it be a bounty hunter, a sig spammer, a manager of some sort, a staff representative, an admin, an honest person, a liar, or whatever.

The decisions you make are going to shape the persona you are on this forum. For example, the OP seems to be worried about getting 120 merits for whatever reason. Then decided to make a post showing why they feel 120 is an important number and they are completely wrong and are not getting any merit for this useless topic also leading me to think sig spammer is what they are desiring to be on this forum.

I could be wrong, idk, just making an observation.

The point is, whether you have 0 merit or 5000 merit you can still contribute to this forum. Along the way you may add to your merit total, you may rank up, or you may get negative rep for being a douche and disappear. You decide who you are and no amount of merit or rank makes a difference.

Well, if there is any number I care so much about on this forum, its the number "1000" in my activity and merit score, you know why?

Because, I wanna become a legendary so freaking bad Grin Roll Eyes.

Haha, on a more serious note now, the number "120" what ever you think it represents on this forum doesn't really matter, what matters here is BTCITCOIN Cool

It's an insightful post, but unfortunately, we are not here to celebrate or attach unnecessary significance to a number, we are here to teach, and learn, and bring alot of significance to BTCITCOIN, for if not for Bitcoin, there would have been no Bitcointalk Cry.

To be sincere, this topic is not helpful and not needed, it is not useful and does not have any quality at all. Please try and create a meaningful topic next time. All ranks are important. The more you rank the more you understand this forum and things better.

REQUIREMENT FOR CAMPAIGNS

There are many campaigns on this forum, but this forum is for learning and contributing. This forum is a place you meet people online to communicate what is happening around the world and most importantly about bitcoin. This forum is not about joining campaign.

Sorry that I post this, but you put in so much effort on what is not needed.

ACCESS TO THE FULL FORUM FEATURES

Starting from Jr. Member can post images in the forum. A member rank can wear signatures. So, it is correct to say that someone whose activity is not upto 120 can still use forum features. So, as activity 60 is important to a Jr. Member, so also 120 is important to a member rank.

REQUIREMENT FOR CAMPAIGNS

I have read that some users here joined signature campaigns as newbies. Meanwhile campaign manager like yahoo62278 and others accept member rank into their campaign, so the 120 figure is defeated again.

USERS FORUM STATISTICS

Some managers also do not require merits for accepting you into campaign. They only check your posting style and maybe your favourite boards and access you.

So, it is good to consider the number 120 as an ordinary number as there is nothing unique about it.
If we are to consider a unique number here, it should be number 7 => BITCOIN

Hello mate firstly I must say you put in time and effort on this one, but mate honestly you have what it takes to put in this same effort on other topics and create a master piece,
Yeah.. I guess it's actually not what you may have expected, but at least it does gives a view in a different perspective about the forum, how our activities are boil down to these number 120 days, which just like you said 4months

and that’s the 120days which is another way of saying approximately 3months.
I must say, you are wrong on this, 120days can never be 3months, its actually 4 months bro.. i.e 30x4=120

But however, i have got previous good threads and still working on more

It’s been a beautiful experience for me on this forum for quite a couple of months now, and I can reminisce coming across several numbers, but just of recent something struck my attention for the very number 120, which made me think, rethink and gave birth to this thread I am about to share with you guys right now. That thou as a number, what importance does it have on its reflection on the forum. Which I will be bisecting and dissecting with you guys to the very best of my understanding how the number holds great influence on this forum which I’m sure you never knew before and you are about to in a couple of seconds. So I advise, go grab a cup of coffee as I work you through this thread how important the number 120 is to the forum.

3 Reasons Why The NO 120 Is Important On The forum

1.   Access to the forum full features
2.   Requirement for campaigns
3.   Users forum statistics

ACCESS TO THE FULL FORUM FEATURES
The number 120 plays a big role here, because in other to access the full forum features, two things are involved ‘Merit’ and ‘Activity’, of which the minimum Activity to rank up to the Full Member is 120, of which gives you access to the complete forum features, such as posting images, wearing signature and avatar, e.t.c. So that makes the number 120 unique and important on the forum because without that these features can’t be access.
