If you set up an exchange using a bank account (which is the best way, postal service is impossible as it is guaranteed to be stolen), once bitcoin is made illegal you will be arrested. It's much more dangerous here.

Don't see any evidence of buying and selling of goods. But RMB are being traded for bitcoin.

This US-based taobao seller (chinese Ebay) has sold 90000 yuan worth of bitcoin. In USD that is around 14-15k. Number of BTC depends on when they were purchased (I don't know).

The post below explains how move from RMB to LRD via Gold2ex using 支付宝 to pay (this is a Chinese PayPal affiliate) and then LRD to BTC via mt.gox. Apparently, the process is reversible allowing BTC to be converted to RMB.

These are great developments, but it would be much better to see a low-fee china-based exchange set up, so that bitcoin could be used for USD->RMB remittances.

I have had to use Western Union to receive remittances in China before, and the fees are ridiculous.

Government doesn't know about it as it's still very early days.

The response will be to block most bitcoin related websites I'm sure.

AFAIK no shops are using, just some over the net trade, but it's just a matter of time.

Can you give examples of bitcoin being used in china? Do shops accept it?

Has there been any response from the chinese government?

Hi all, we've now had the wiki translated to Chinese.

I think the standard of the translations is pretty good, and we still have a remaining 14btc for this, although I'm not sure what we will use it for.

With the rising value of bitcoin and it's growing use in China(people are actually using it, but they're a little behind), this is a great thing.

Check it out.
