They need it. The congestion are getting worse each day and there are no other way for ethereum to survive.
If they don't be able to make a visible change, people would shift to other options.

The Recent Comments of Vitalik Buterin :
With second-layer solutions such as Sharding and Plasma, the Ethereum network will eventually be able to process 1 million transactions per second and potentially more than 100 million transactions per second.  speaking in a recent OmiseGO AMA session, is giving his assurances in how he sees the dApp platforms will solve their scalability issues.

Recent Transaction frequency per second shows a number of services and their transactions are shown below

Ethereum 2017: 5 per second
    Uber: 12 rides per second
    Paypal: 100s per second
    Visa: 1000s per second
    Stock Exchanges: 10,000s per second
    IoT: 100,000s per second

The Question is?Can Sharding and Plasma Give Ethereum Warp Speed Transactions Per Second?
What are your thoughts.

Sharding is a good method to improve transactions speed. I am hoping ETH will improve the tx speed with sharding and plasma.
Because if tx speed not improved, as you can see with this condition, network of ETH is very easy to congest due some exchange listing competition.

I do not think they will hit that mark anytime soon.
