Yes, living conditions are way better in most european nations but they are only pseudo-democratic, the reason why Brittain is in the process of leaving EU.Individual states in the USA have direct democracy too... A representative democracy can be democratic too if the members of the parliament really represent those that voted them and not some cronies...
Britain is become a direct democracy too... At least on large issues (Scotland, EU).
