You should know that PCIe splitter is more cheaper than buying a new 12gpu mining motherboard right? It's wiser to save money by all means necessary, do not buy another motherboard instead,  there are two types of splitters one with 4 USB onboard and another with 7 USB onboard, they work .

If I run all 12 graphic cards on a single motherboard vs using two separate motherboards (6/6) will I be able to safe extra power? A motherboard takes up to 120watt depending on the CPU and gen type that's why I think this is a reasonable question to ask .

Aside from saving power you could also save space, this is recommended if you have the existing mother which can accommodate up to 12 gpu. If you are still planning to buy another mobo to use it for 6/6, better buy it with a close mining frame, a good frame is security for your cards from outside disturbance.

You can save 100 watt of power as no one uses powerful processors in a mining rig unless they are also CPU mining besides GPU mining.100 watt may be not much but with today continuing increase of energy prices every little bit helps so yes you can, beside that running the least number of motherboards can also make you have few number of problems compared to running 2 or more motherboards to achieve the same purprose.

I would just try buying one or two of those 4-way PCIe x1 to USB splitter cards. Your existing motherboards might be able to support up to 12 cards each with this method.

Looks like you could, that is if you already own the motherboard that can take up to 12 graphic cards at once, don't go out and buy one to safe extra 100watts because your ROI will only get longer doing this, it's good to try to safe every power consumption possible since profit of mining isn't looking as good as before almost every day now but 100watt saved for a new motherboard isn't worth it.
