I think NXT will not be replaced with NEM, but they can cooperate together.

NXT has a lot of advantages over any cloned coin of Bitcoin and in many ways over Bitcoin, so NXT is a great currency, but has has a rough start and a very small initial distribution.  NEM looks to address this and other problems.  For instance NXT uses POS, which is a lot better way to maintain a network than mining, but to some extent encourages hoarding.  A currency not spent is not really a currency.  NEM is looking to implement POI or PON which will encourage spending and transactions.  A coin that is constantly being spent, is a live coin!

I hope that the Nxt devs don't start to ignore Nxt and focus on NEM instead.

And this makes it possible to replace NXT just by not accepting oppressive artifical price of bagholders. The community shows the way of the transaction network to success or fail. Give something to the community and it will a community to you.
IF 1 million of people will use NEM the NXT may cost even 100 hundred more but nobody will still use (and buy) that. No matter how many devs it has. Look at doge, it made a success just by community, technically its a clone.
However this doesnt mean that exactly NEM must do the success it may be everything else. NEM is only try n. 1.

However to answer your question

I dont think that NEM will "replace" Nxt

Nxt has issues but I believe they have many smart people behind both

Time will tell I guess

Was thinking about investing a little bit into NXT but from what I have read, NEM is an upgraded version of NXT and will probably make NXT obsolete by the end of 2014. Am I misinformed?

NEM is a 100% NXT clone with plans to change the method of distribution. As far as I know all they've done so far is collect funds without releasing anything technical.

100% wrong!

NEM is NOT a NXT clone, it will have totally own code and as so far i know they have released plans about development and technical aspects.

NEM will be a big thing if everything goes well. The distribution model and community can make it become one of the hottest altcoins in 2014.
Its totally different than these shit-pot-fuckcoins.

Turns out that NEM is not going to be a clone of NXT. Devs decided to write new code from scratch taking the best of NXT combinig with some new ideas and improvements. Regarding your question, if everything will go as planned, it is very possible.
