My intent is to start this up in the basement, babysit the rigs for a couple weeks, and then hike the length of the Appalachian Trail while my busy little miners chug away. Hopefully when I come back the miners will have made a nice little pile of bitcoins.

Well it looks like the 5850's can get up to 300 Mh/s if done right. At $140 apiece that is really approachable to run two of them in one system.
I get 400 Mh/s out of my 5850, and it's silent + never above 70C. So if you do it right it's quite nice for a 120$ card :3
If you can't find any 5850/5870/5970/6990, then look for a 6950 and then unlock the shaders. It is cheaper than a 6970 and gets almost as much performance.
Choose the 6970 over the 6950 if you don't have a dedicated rig and use that rig for any gaming. I mothballed my 570GTX (OC) for a stock 6970 just for the purposes of mining and I am getting 366MH/s as opposed to 133MH/s. I actually like NVidia better otherwise; the hardware and drivers [especially the latter] seems far more stable to me.
One other thing; future driver or BIOS updates may possibly get further performance from the 6970 (new cards always seem to have less than optimal drivers/BIOS running them).

Yep, unlocked 6950 is the way I'm going. Well, as soon as I have enough USD to spare.

the sapphire 5850 extreme seems to be the best mining card for a budget build right now.. Mine runs at 320MHash/s with a very mild overclock, could easily run at 350 if I wanted to run the fan at higher speeds. I don't think it can be beat at less than $150!
So maybe this other one then? ASUS has an ATI 6870 that is cheaper that I could get instead.
