As DrG says a dummy plug will fix this, for the 290(x) you'll need a DVI one.

I use them on my windows based rigs and it helps a lot.

Sorry friend are too late. Lots of money was made by the early Miners who had easy mining of bitcoins but the complexity has gone up as more bitcoin are mined.

Not sure how this applies exactly.....

However, rig is stable without monitor plugged in.  Didn't change anything really, guess previous problems were just a fluke.  The only problem I have is when I try to open MSI Afterburner and it goes to the permission screen.  When it goes to that screen my remote access screen goes black and I can't do anything.

Have you tried using a dummy plug.  It shouldn't be necessary with current drives but it's an easy workaround.

I am currently running Windows 8 on my rig with a 290 and two 290x's.  I use a variety of miners depending coin I'm mining along with MSI Afterburner for easy overclocking control.  I use Logmein to control remotely, however when I unplug the monitor that I have connected to the 290, the system freaks out and becomes unstable/unmanageable.  I would like to keep the same setup I currently have just minus the monitor.  Any simple fixes I can try?  I'm fairly ignorant regarding many of the programs/techniques used in mining(learning everything slowly) so please be detailed with your help!

Thanks
