I updated my script to support dependency installation on ubuntu. Tested this with Ubuntu 16.0.4.3 live as well as Debian 9.2 live
Sweet little install script, Abdussamad! Works perfectly with 3.0.2 Smiley

Just a heads-up that this doesn't seem to work very well with version 2.9.3 of Electrum... Not sure why anyone would want to run an older version... but you never know Wink

https://github.com/BitcoinsPakistan/electrum-install

Download and run the install script using sudo

Code:
wget https://github.com/BitcoinsPakistan/electrum-install/raw/master/install
sudo bash install 3.0.2

And this worked like a charm.  Thank you!

Just an idea, maybe it helps getting to a solution without more install headache:

Maybe it would be less hassle to build yourself a paper wallet. Instead of the 13 nice words you'll have an ugly private key, I know, but you can get the zip from bitaddress.org page, build the paper wallet offline and .. done.
Unzip and browser should not be a problem, I hope.

Thanks that's probably true, but this isn't meant for me, it's for computer-iliterate friends to have a more secure environment to bitcoin from.   The premise being most people use Windows, and who knows what malware they may have on their system.

I'd just like to get a USB with a clean linux OS and a working electrum in their hands.

I've tried all the (old) instructions on how to install Electrum from a live Ubuntu USB, but nothing is working for me.   I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

The software center install doesn't work..but that's fine, the version there is pretty old.

But the instructions from the electrum website are also not working for me.    Even after working around all the various error messages, and installying python3 etc... .still no dice.

Is there a tried and tested way of getting electrum to install on a live Ubuntu CD?  I'm hoping to install it, unplug ethernet cable, run it, and write down the 13 keywords and receive address, then send coins to the (cold) wallet, and one day make it "hot" by re-building from my 13 keywords.   Reasonable?
