I'm kind of sad when i saw a one-liner-less-than-ten-word post of a high ranked getting merits and thinking if that post was made by a low ranked member, will it get some merits?
See, when the admin mentioned a quality post, he no where mentioned that it has to be an essay. Different members may have their own decisions regarding what is  a good quality post. For instance, suppose a member has asked that " how many sMerits will I get after receiving 10 merit points. " To the point answer to this question is 5 and there is no need to make a post in 5-6 lines for this. Most of the times rest of the content is not needed at all.

Regarding higher ranked members being treated differently, this is not true in as per my experience.
I choose happy and sad, happy that I saw the forum lessen the spammer and shit posters and now sad because I think it takes for me a long time before ranking up. Yeah, I noticed that some of higher ranks are not fair to newbies here of giving smerit, no fall offend them but mostly higher ranks are being arrogant to the newcomers.

Can I suggest that those higher ranks like Legendary and Hero member must have more smerit to send? Grin Grin

It might be for the newbie restriction, I am not sure. You are really right on distributing merits fairly but I think for us human it's kind of impossible to make a decision without being biased. Merit system needs to be improvised so that it does not depend on human decision. Instead of we giving merit each others try to find out or develop a script that will scrape what you wrote then evaluate it then give you merit or whatever the point is for the quality of your writing. The funny thing is in this forum i guess most of the people do not even know what makes a good post. They have this picture that a good post should be a long essay  Tongue

I really do not like the idea of using a script for evaluating the posts made here. This is because users will start trying with different types of posts and figure out responses that are getting merits. They will just start making similar posts and this will make the system effective. This is like the Google algorithm for ranking websites. Different webmasters keep trying different link building strategies and then abuse it one they find the working option. This is why Google also does manual review of websites getting very high income with Google AdSense.

...one more thing, there could maybe be a drop menu when you click on merit where you can select the amount (example: 1,2,3,5,10) or click on + if you think it deserves more.
My argument for this is: Since the merit is directly involved in ranking up, then it should appear more available and more practical to give.

It really is a good idea. Most of the time you might not have it in mind (sending merit) the way currently it's on the right corner with just a "+Merit" link.

This thread actually seems like an attempt to get merit, which is actually a common theme around the meta section, here's how it goes;

1. Make a thread relating to merit to inspire discussion
2. Pretend you're contributing something to the community
3. Receive merits as planned
4. Huh
5. Profit

Pretty much every thread and posts are an attempt to get merit.  Grin

Also, that should probably be something like:

> Make a thread relating to merit to inspire discussion
> Pretend you're contributing something to the community
> Huh?
> Profit

But seriously, the only thing I see is the blurred line of what makes a constructive or what makes it a quality post overall. There should be a little more freedom considering giving merit. if you look at the most recent topics, a good number of them as [ANN] threads.

Also, one more thing, there could maybe be a drop menu when you click on merit where you can select the amount (example: 1,2,3,5,10) or click on + if you think it deserves more.

The merit system is great and all, it defiently helped with reducing the shitposting and spam threads, but the merit requiremnts to rank up is where the problem lies, in the low ranks it is understandable but at a certain point where you need 250 and 500 merits to rank up it is too much, the sense of progress that poeople had is practiculy gone, the thing that keeps you coming back to post and increase your activity has vanished, at a certain point you feel like you are stuck and have zero motivation because even if you write good quality pots no one is going to take the time and read it because you are nobudy.

That's not quite true. Don't try to chase merits, write posts just for merit and forcing yourself. They'll always turn out really forced and it's noticeable. Stick to topics you know and don't expect to get merits on every other post, you're not nullius. Just compare his posts and the majority of other peoples posts.

It's not work or mandatory to earn a certain amount of merits in a month, relax.

I don't think you people understand ranks as a concept. Think of it like this: You're doing your thing, helping newbies out, giving advice on wallets and exchanges, advice on alt-coin investing,etc... and over time, you'll get better at any specific field and therefore write more helpful, meritable posts. Ranks are there to signify your improvement and if you're not improving, you'll not rank up. Pretty simple.

I'm kind of sad when i saw a one-liner-less-than-ten-word post of a high ranked getting merits and thinking if that post was made by a low ranked member, will it get some merits?

It's happening most of the time. We tend to believe that someone with high reputation is going to produce good contents. I am not denying the fact that they can not but not in all case.

Look, merit system is doing exactly that it was intended to do. Now we see people are not posting shits that much rather people are thinking before posting anything. So it's not the Merit system we should blame for that. It's the application level to be blamed. We need to improvise it. Some tweaking can perfect the current merit system.

Just having a wild thought, (don't count)...

How about disable showing the rank for the members for a week or two on the forum. Since no one can see what is your rank so whenever someone will send any sMerits to someone else then they are actually sending it because of the true value. (I know it's really a wild thinking LOL )

Well for some reason the poll won't let me vote (guess newbie restriction?) but it would be option 5 for me.

I ghost far more than posting but have noticed that the quality has improved remarkably, it's not perfect just yet and there's still a good amount of spam but it's so so much better and I feel moderators can get much more of a handle on things now. For this I am very happy, I'll start to post more now this is the case.

The other side of it is that many quality posts are not receiving merit and I think that comes down to there not being enough merit around. It is easy to say that users are not spending their merit, but that's very difficult to fix. Adding more and more merit sources will only improve things.

Theymos said that he wants merit not to be a limiting factor on account growth, which should mean that in theory a good post gets 1 or more merit. I don't know but I imagine very few people are averaging more than 1 merit per post right now.

Ultimately if we get more merit sources and have some higher authority who ensures that these merit sources are distributing merits fairly then merit will be a really great success.

It might be for the newbie restriction, I am not sure. You are really right on distributing merits fairly but I think for us human it's kind of impossible to make a decision without being biased. I choose sad. because the real newbie didn't know about bitcoin and how to earn profitable income in this forum. how can they join in bounties if they're not rank up. is it hard to them to create a debatable post and quality opinions to get merit.

Actually it's not the way you are thinking. Having a newbie rank on this forum does not mean that the person can not port quality post. The person may be new in here but he might know more about crypto world than some of the higher ranked members.

But the forum is not designed to earn money,if you want earn money do some real job bro. Smiley

The main function of our forum is to be informative to the newbie so if you are newbie you can earn more knowledge here but money,NO.
You still can earn money so you need to rank up so improve your knowledge first then give more effort to make a post sure you will earn merit and also can join in bounties.

I think this system is a forum for measures taken by too much spam, not mature, but does improve the quality of the forum, more people are willing to release high-quality valuable posts, while many people choose to leave. As the digital currency boom recedes, the forum will naturally calm down, after which there is a need for a more comprehensive system to upgrade the account.

Why are you suggesting an answer for us? Why do have one "happy" answer and 3 or 4 "not happy" answers? Your survey is incredibly bias. Your bitching about the merit system is played out.

And your suggested response has a double negative... in it so you're actually saying that you're said because some posts are not merited.

[Suggested] Happy and sad - Happy coz shit posters are not just posting for rank up and Sad coz  not all the good posts are not merited, limited merit source etc.
- Just realised when I quoted "Suggested" it actually giving an impression that I am suggesting the viewers to vote for this. I am really sorry. Just going to change it something like "User's choice, if you have your own choice then please leave it in the comment section". Thank you for this.

Have your read the options are tried to figure out the possible logical options for the answers? I'm sure you have not. It's not about how many happy and how many sad words on the post rather it's about thinking the logical answers. If you still can't figure out then at-least don't say something which is not. A poll that suggests what people should vote? What's the purpose of this thread then?  Roll Eyes

The purpose is to see whether your stand is right or not. We human has a natural instinct which is when we decide or choose anything then we tend to believe that this is 100% true/right. We forget that five fingers are not same.

100 people has more than one opinion. Something is right for you does not mean the other one is wrong. In a community if i decide what is right or wrong then I am deciding considering my interest (nobody is above their own interest not even the angels, angels are doing all this good work because they want to make their GOD happy, which is an interest). I believe when it comes to a collective of people than we should back up the higher percent's.

In this forum the reality is not (may be) what the mass says on this post however as a community we can see what the majority thinks.  Hope it make sense for the purpose.

HabBear and skorupi17 have a good point in regard to your suggested choice.
You're doing a qualitative survey which should not have that kind of bias (all survey should not have biases though).
Even though it might not drastically change how others opinion about merit, this was a fatal mistake in your research methodology.

You can add one more option to you the pool that happy and sad.Because I am feeling both happy and the sad on the implementation of the merit system.

I am happy becuase the merit system will restrict the signature spammers who are posting for the sake of rankup,so no more rank up with shit posts and non-sence idiotic posts.SO maybe here after we may have the real discussion around the sections.

I am sad because not all the good posts are not merited ,since the merits sources are very limited and the people who are only excanging in between their alts so the good quality posts are not merited yet,but I hope the system needs some more time to settle down and it will be good if there are more merit sources because the 57 members can not look for the good quality posts in the forum,so increasing the merits sources may help to find the good posts.

Every system will have its pros and cons. The admin has to analyze overall impact before implementing such changes. One more thing, In my opinion, this is a very harsh step taken and only few webmasters will have the guts to do things like this.
Yeah,I agree nothing in this world is perfect so they have its pros and cons but we can analyze the merits system and can make some tuning to the system to make it lot better and I hope there will be some changes made into the system even theymos said that he will watch how the system work and will make the cahnges of needed.

The shitposting brigade still is polluting the forum, but I like that it's no longer activity that's needed to rank up.  These spam monkeys are getting their paycheck, but they're not going to rank up unless they get merits--and that's not easy to do legally.  So things are getting sunnier, but there's still some dark clouds that have yet to blow away.

I'm confident this'll happen, but it takes time.  As I've said in the 10,000 other merit threads I've posted in: I'm very happy that the merit system is lighting a fire under people's asses, and not just the shitposters.

Everyone has to step up their game if they want to rank up, and I'm fucking ELATED that the spammers don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of advancing.

I'm happy for the merit system since most of the newbies here are just posting to gain activities to rank up and join bounty programs. But at the same time, it's kinda disappointing.
Some users merit the users they know in real life. Some users merit their own lower rank accounts so it's unfair to those who posts meaningful replies. I suggest the moderators or the creators of a thread should merit those who replies that makes sense on their post.

But if you are here for quiet a months now, I think you should accept this and start working on it. Cause you cannot do anything but to obey with rules so this forum will maintain its good image. I'm happy because I'm here and I'm happy to learn more for whatever rules is I will follow.

I would like to choose both happy and sad.
1. Happy because merit system has motivated users to be more energetic, more constructive, in particular newcomers have tried composing higher quality posts, helping others. On the other hand, higher ranked users found them useful in terms of giving newcomers hints, links, documents to learn, advices to improve their knowledge, skills, etc. It is two-way interaction between them.
2. Sad mainly because merit abusements seem to be occured and discovered day by day, including merit trading, merit exchanging, etc. We can easily found low-quality or even one-line posts which received 20, 30, or 50 merits from one specific sender. It destroys the original objectives of merit system.

To conclude, I highly appreciate what Theymos have done to launch merit system and strongly believe in the system that it will help to clean up and build up the forum as better place for Bitcoin/Altcoins discussions.

I'm pretty happy about the new merit system, not just because of the quality posting and ranking up being more satisfying as you know you've earned that rank, but also because I can go around and pretend I'm an inspector (always wanted to be a police inspector), catching users that are abusing the merit system. Since Jan 25th we have this new merit system to credit the quality posts on this forum. No doubt that merit system is going to stay here for long time. It's been around a month and I have seen different feedback from different members but collectively I have not seen a feedback from a group yet. I am not even sure if anyone on this forum have ever done this yet or not. So, this is my little initiation to learn really where we are with merit system. As a community what is our emotional stand for this.

Please select an answer that goes closer to your emotional stand from the above. To view the result please press the "Submit Vote" button.

PS: If you select option 5 then please make a comment for your customised feedback, I will try to add the feedback on the pool with "User's choice" option. I wish I was more creative to bring up more options for you.
