my supplier just sent this video of the sample protective case designed for the moon bars... production has started and I'll take some better photos soon - happy with the fit and if all goes well I will soon be creating cases for my older work as well  Cheesy

Not taking orders yet, but will post here or send an email when ready.

Awesome! I definitely want them for my Suite. Also want them for the rest of my bars Grin.

haha, thanks teeGUMES, you're too kind. So with the case these bars will be almost identical in size to all slabs on the market, and thus will have many attractive storage options - that's how I designed them.

To answer your question Rmcdermott927, if I'm satisfied with how these turn out, then I will make drawings for my older designs and have molds produced for them as well.

And to elaborate on my previous post, the material I'm planning on using is TPU, or thermoplastic polyurethane. It's a hybrid of silicone and plastic, so it will have some elasticity to it and should be soft enough to protect the surface area of the bars.

I'm close to pulling the trigger on these silicone molds. In my research I'm finding the only risk of silicone to stainless steels and other metals lies in the curing process, and these will have cured prior to me receiving them.

I plan to encase one of my bars for a month or longer before shipping to see if I notice any issues, and will continue to monitor... so if any issues arise perhaps I can warn others in time.

For an added layer of protection, perhaps the bars can be wrapped in a layer of saran wrap prior to encapsulating?

https://i.imgur.com/HbnQQ2S.jpg

Expect to see a finished product some time this summer. I waiting on a sample of the silicone material now.

If all goes well, I will order a similar product for my earlier pieces.

A moon bar encapsulated in one of these cases will be the same size as the slabs offered by other companies, so many storage options will then be available.

Best,

Max-

Please message me when this is complete if you plan on having ones that will fit the Original and Silver 1 BTC models.   I would be glad to pick up a few.

Well... got my pack of cases and the bar does fit surprisingly well Cheesy
Mine didn't seal all the way, but might be because the foam was a little thick.... need to resize.
Overall, pretty decent for a pre-made, non-custom capsule.

I have a few extra if anyone is interested Cheesy
Thanks

The foams a bitch, it takes some maneuvering to get it just right. It just fit snug without any foam at all right?

No Sad  there is a little wiggle room on both left and right sides, so the bar "slides" up and down in the capsule.
I imagine your "brand" was a little smaller...

MJ any concerns long term about the case causing marks on the Moon bars, say if shipping?

I personally don't think I would ship one of the moon bars in these capsules.
Not that I think it would mess it up, just that it does not fit 100%.
Would let the end-user assemble the set for display.

What I was asking, when you don’t use any foam does the capsule shut all the way? ..Unlike when you have foam inserted.

I did a check, and no, the bar sticks up just a tiny bit that does not allow 100% closure..

Sand down the face of the bar with 60 grit to make it fit in the capsule?

Well duh.... of course!!! Cheesy  Buying a larger/properly fitting capsule would be insane

Maybe I'll just take a grinding wheel to it and make it a quick job Wink

It will be very difficult to do a clean job with a grinder.  I suggest an orbital sander or a belt sander if you have one available.

I might have to borrow a belt sander. So I double checked myself and the case does not fully close whether there’s foam or not. However it is so close that I’ll absolutely still be keeping my bars in these. Also, you could easily fully seal them with transparent tape or maybe if you’re crafty even some sort of glue perhaps?

I've found that 10 oz silver bar capsules work pretty well for the new Kialara Moon bars.  If you want them snug you've gotta put some sort of insert in them.

oh wow... very awesome that you found a decent capsule.
Maybe for a little more protection, cut the top piece of foam in half and use the other part for the bottom, so the bar has something to sit/rest on rather than the hard plastic.

and was this a certain brand you ordered?
I just ordered these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/10oz-Silver-Bar-Direct-Fit-Air-Tite-Capsule-Holders-10-Pack/301814345743
If they fit, I will have some extras if anyone wants/needs one or a few Cheesy

I'm pretty sure I got them here as it's where I buy all my capsules - https://www.air-tites.com/5-oz-and-10-oz-silver-bar-holders.htm#.WrQ1qqjwYdU

I agree- foam on both sides would be best.  I just quickly put this together to show how well it works.  However even with out foam I don't think this plastic is all that harmful to the bars even when sliding around a little...not advocating this of course as foam on both sides is certainly best.

wow these look really cool :O

they only fit the new moon bars, right?
I can surely use some Cheesy

MJ- that would work for me!  I've seen how well the Genesis case worked out.

Sky- yup only new moons bars.  Trust me I tried with the older Kia bars a long time ago with no luck- nor with anything else for that matter.

Just a thought, but I have concerns with silicone long term leaving spots in a similar fashion as PVC does on metals....I could be wrong, but I would be very hesitant to seal the bars in silicone long term myself.

I don't have any knowledge of this issue, so I should do some r & d and talk with my metal suppliers as well - thanks for the valid concern! So I'm afraid a hard plastic could scuff the metal, and the silicone could leave potential spots from what you are saying - perhaps there is another solution as well. I plan to use funds from the ruby lab sales to tackle this and hopefully bring a working solution soon - followed by similar cases for my older, larger designs. I can run tests myself once I get samples in, hopefully soon.

Max I would be a little concerned as well.  Long term I don't like to keep silver in anything besides hard plastic capsules.  I think these plastic cases like I'm using really are best when customized and or have foam padding.  When fit right and made with the proper plastic I really think the bars will be well protected..  It's a project that's for sure  Cheesy

Edit- maybe I’m wrong too. Also- I wonder how clear it can really be vs hard plastic, which is obviously perfectly transparent.

I got custom slabs made for the Genesis Series 2 coins from plastixrevolution.com
Worth a shot... and easy to deal with!!!
Let me know if you need more info!! Cheesy

MJ- I had never seen the Genesis slab at time of posting this.  Now that I'm well familiar with it, I was thinking something like that would be awesome!  I just bought a bunch of different things on amazon to try and make a case and it all sucked. Hence the Resurrection of this post.

Is this a project plastixrevolution would like to take on?  BG4 get his bar?  Cheesy    We've got plenty of demand for cases right?

I guess it might be hard to make a universal case for all models esp Moons (though maybe not impossible).  Max did mention he's been looking in to this as he knows the demand is there as well but it would only be for the Moon bars at first.  We gotta have something for these already.

From another thread if you have not already seen it  (I'll likely to keep looking a little for a universal case).

"I've started thinking more seriously about protective casings and I've ordered a dozen different kinds from different manufacturers this year. None that are a perfect fit, I'm just working out what I'm wanting exactly and what materials to use. I worry a little that any hard plastic case could potentially scratch a polished mirror surface, while a PVC vinyl material would not. There are more options available if you go with an opaque container, but I know people might prefer a transparent one. I haven't ruled it out though.

Originally my cases were designed to protect the coin inside, but it wasn't long before I realized my cases could use cases of their own. And I do plan to produce something... most likely for the new moon bars first, as I plan to continue releasing works at this new size. And I can't promise it will be anything fancy, as I may end up leaning towards function over form in this scenario. But I am working on a solution nonetheless.

I know some iPhone cases and even business card cases can work, too: http://imgur.com/Uc6my1U"

Interesting but the phone case and business card cases aren't good at all , i would rather keep them in the original translucent pouches instead.
Though i'd be interested in a good amount of a transparent case.
Looking forward what everyone is working on and willing to provide.
I'm sure if something nice comes up , i will pick a decent amount given they are a fir for all or separately made for each bar...

Will update once I know more.

Looking forward to any progress in this space we can make! Thanks!

Well not so great news today from Air-tites.  " Yes, I recognized the name as a repeat customer which we appreciate.  We are not actually the manufacturer of the air-tite products.  You would want to contact airtiteholders.com in regards to having new products made.  I can tell you that it usually takes a high demand over a long period of time for them to create a new product as creating a new die is expensive but they do usually get around to making holders for popular items.  I have been getting more and more inquiries about bitcoin rounds etc lately so it is possible".

Well being that these are not rounds (and the fact that you can find air-tites with foam padding already for those-Not an encouraging email (I'm curious how many everyone would want each if a universal capsule was made? I think 100 might be the minimum anyone would be willing to make and now pretty convinced it'd be too hard to get direct fits for each version?).  I will still reach out and have a few other ideas in mind.  I will make this happen for all of us somehow!  I always want to show my Kia's off but I don't ever touch them with my fingers and showing a friend one with gloves on who might not even know what Bitcoin is..kind of a weird thing  Cheesy    I'll keep everyone posted.

Probably a silly question and after a little research it looks to be off the table but worth asking.  3D printing?  From my MINIMAL knowledge/research it looks like those things only make molds out of some sort of non-plastic material or at least hard/clear plastic?  That is a 3D printing machine that isn't insanely expensive, pretty sure those things can make whatever if you have an industrial one.

Not a silly question, 3D printing would be used to design the prototype and test fit the bar(s).  After that the final design would then be sent off to another company for production in acrylic.  I do a lot of 3D printing and design myself and have a thread with more information.

Very cool-thanks!  I have just been trying to dream up any possible scenario.

The slip case doesn't meet the needs of something that would be a multi-kialara display case -- but not a bad idea for singles.

Would be cool if they could be graded by one of the grading institutions as well..

Not to be a downer here but ANACS or whoever will likely reject the submission... it's not a coin, it's a bar.  Roll Eyes

I have read/heard the same.  It already sucks enough that my favorite grader NGC wont do Casascius coins.  While I would still have wanted this "magical" slab/case/capsule we all seek for our Kia's...I would have sent some to ANACS or NGC a while ago and not had the search of a lifetime and maybe just gave up all together.

For Kialara original, silver and golds a slip case for iPhone 5 fits just right. Here is an example of one on Amazon.

I have some similar cases for sale on my emporium (without the plastic card slots), but they don't fit the requirements of the OP.  He's looking for something that will allow the bar to be viewed while in the case without removing it.

Quote
I'm looking for something like a commodity bar case where I can hold and clearly view the entire bar.

I want the same thing as well.... Somebody needs to send/lend BG4 a Kialara bar asap... I would, but it's not here yet. Tongue

Like I said - if someone made a case for 21 original/silver/gold/lab or a 10 case for original/silver/gold/lab or a 3/10 case for Moon series...

Depending on materials used, obviously, but I would reward that pursuit handsomely

Having them up on my wall would be far cooler than tucked away somewhere..

This actually seems pretty exciting!

keeping them in a display case!

i remember the plastic film black rectangle frames MJ sold, they also fit the kialara bars nicely Smiley
Yes those floating cases are pretty nice but something sturdy specially made got a Kialara would be a lot better. Like the custom cases BG4 made for the Genesis coins.

I was hoping my post would get things moving in the direction of getting us Kialara bar owners/enthusiasts what we have probably all been looking for since the day we got our very first Kia bars! To the Moon bars- excited to see mine? Fair assessment! Cheesy.  Will keep on this task and hopefully bring you all good news sooner than later. Of course love that others are looking in to this as well!

Just silver/gold/orig/labyrinth for me...

Soon to be a few Moon series as well.

The need for a custom, well-secured display case stands - let me know if anyone wants to take a stab at it Tongue

Given that I have a Kialara Fort, if someone were to make a 21-unit custom case for displaying them handsomely, I would pay quite well for it..

That sounds like a BG4 challenge.....  Cheesy

Jealous, that's for sure.  I know that air-tites.com does make custom cases for just about anything (still waiting to hear back on customized slabs/capsules.  If I can get slabs/capsules made then a custom case would come next for sure).

Thanks, keep us updated, pretty sure quite a few of us are awaiting the latest Moon bars! Cheesy

I'm interested. Need a nice case for my Kialara's especially my gold Kialara. Grin

If anyone wants to send me measurements of each Series or size, that would be a good start.
Try to measure with a caliper if possible Cheesy

That tool I do not have, good call!  I would think you could safely get a "universal" one made around maybe 50-75 of them and sell them all fairly quickly ?  Would definitely prefer exact fits, but a universal one would be cool too.  I reached out to air-tites.com as I'm a big fan of theirs.  Will keep you all posted.

Yeah.. I was thinking along those lines..maybe a foam insert like the rings to accommodate the variations in series sizes... ??

I have searched high and low and tried just about everything to find a good storage case/capsule of some sort for Kialara's.  Of course they have different sizes but I've tried 10oz commodity bar cases/sleeves, oversized baseball card cases & on and on.  I do think floating coin cases are cool as a showcase piece, but I'm looking for something like a commodity bar case where I can hold and clearly view the entire bar.  I am now considering (and just sent out my first inquiry) to having these manufactured.  Ideally I'd like a case that fit's each bar exactly but a case that fit all Kia bars that includes the option of having foam padding to hold them in place just as many coin capsule's have would be cool too, IMO.  Thoughts/Idea/Questions would be appreciated!
