I am not a lender either, and would not trade nor lend to anyone with out having some connection to their identity in the real world for collection purposes.

I'll say this again, I started a watch list some time ago which was my subtle way to say , these are new or existing users how may not have scammed anyone yet, but who are exhibiting suspicious behavior in my interactions with them.

So instead of calling them out immediately other user could check the watch list before executing a trade or a loan and they could be removed from the watch list if they turned out to be legitimate, or branded a scammer if that was the eventual case.

Unfortunately is did not seem to be useful so it was not maintained.

In any event one turned out to be a scammer, one disappeared after being called out and another user was taken off the list after successful trades

(this was used for currency exchange and not for lending)

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.1061068

I do know johnthedong hat started a defaulted creditors list some where But I'm not sure if that is maintained anymore either.

While there are plenty of scammers and their methods are pretty obvious to most members who have been around for a while, there are probably more newbees who have no idea that their requests are considered "scammy" when they are just exploring.
I understand what you're saying, however, from what I've seen in this subsection here over the last year or so, it's almost all scammers. A lot of them follow the same formulas - it's obvious what they are after from their insincere posts in the other sections. (I haven't seen TC "randomly" doing anything, btw.)

That being said, if you want to politely explain why they are acting in a suspicious manner every single time it comes up, be my guest. I have taken that approach on several occasions.

The flipside of your argument against "scaring away newbs who don't know any better" is the "less discerning lenders that don't know any better" who might take a closer look when suspicious behavior is identified when they see the thread.

The fact you were scammed by people with a high post count is not a counter-point. It means we should be even more on guard. Post count is certainly not enough to trust someone. I personally wouldn't lend to anyone I hadn't met (or didn't at least know someone I had met.)

I do not doubt tomatocage's intentions, however it is his methods that are of concern.  There are probably millions of new user of bitcoin  - curiosity seekers who come here on a regular basis seeking out additional info or understanding of what this is all about as the media coverage grows.

While there are plenty of scammers and their methods are pretty obvious to most members who have been around for a while, there are probably more newbees who have no idea that their requests are considered "scammy" when they are just exploring.

There are plenty of idiots out  there who will (invest) and/or loan out their hard earned money to any anonymous person who asks.  Then there are legitimate lenders who will vet these requests based on there own and the borrowers risk profile.

To randomly call out anyone seeking a loan with a low post count is neither productive/nor helpful and in fact is destructive to the growth of our community.

Wouldn't it be better to possibly explain to these newbees how the system works rather then just attack them after their first or second post.

I see this frequently on the currency exchange board.  I have traded numerous time with newbess and those that pass my verification requests have been legitimate 99.9 % of the time.

And frankly, early on I' was scammed more my Senior and Hero members because I mistakenly trusted that classification as someone  would could be trusted.

No, he calls out everyone that sounds suspicious. If you're not an established user, that includes you, regardless of your intentions. If that offends you, that's your problem.

There is a lot of trust involved in lending and the lending forum was not set up for strangers (of which 99% are indeed scammers.)

If appreciating someone that relentlessly calls out these idiotic scammers makes me guilty of something, then take me to jail. I poke at them once and a while, but am not nearly as entertaining.

AFAIK, the lending forum was not set up for people with 0 history/rep to come scam and beg.

Man tomato what was shoved up your ass today? Come on if your not trying to get everyone to hate you then you are going to regret this thread in the future.

It's not just today. Scammers are rampant on these forums every single day of the week, especially in this section (and Currency Exchange and maybe Goods).  Granted, I may make a wrong call every now and then and some people might get butt-hurt over it. Oh well, I couldn't give a fuck less. It's the scumbag worthless scammers stealing peoples' coins who you should really hate.

it's not that hard to spot a scammer.      I understand you want to help tomato and warn others.

If you notice a post that seems scammy why not just ignore it.  If the person is just here to scam and no one replies to the post then they will eventually get the hint and:

                           A: Go away
B: realize they need to be more established and stick around
                           C: buy there own bitcoins

If your new and have no clue about any of the scams that happened in the past or the effect its had on trust then you dont know any better.
Calling the ignorant a scammer drives them out of the community. They feel unwelcome.

If you want bitcoin to grow  and increase in value, then you need more and more people to stick around and start spending coins.
this forum should be a welcoming first stop on someones bitcoin journey.
Instead of screaming scammer, why not explain to the new user that people dont give loans to people with no rep.

or better yet..... make the lending section  like the newbie section is.   before you can even post in lending put a required post count/title you must achieve before requesting a loan.  that would discourage the 4hr  5 post newbs from going straight to lending.
I doubt many scammers are going to take the time to write 100-200 thoughtful post and maybe a 3 month wait so they can scam there first loan of probably 1-3 coins.

thats a lot of effort to go through knowing that even after you pass all the requirements the most someone is going to give you your first loan for is $10-$50 bucks.

either way the lender should decide weather or not they trust the person.  It shouldnt be a Salem witch trial.
Lend or ignore.    easy as that.

Seriously, a loan for $10?  Or $40?  If you can't afford that, chances are high that you're not going to be able to repay off a "loan".  Where do all these poverty idiots come from?

Have you ever tried to buy just $10 worth of BTC? It's pretty hard to do, it makes more sense & is easier to just borrow the $10 worth of BTC when your a few bucks short for your SR medication & then pay it back when you buy your next batch of BTC.
High rep, small loan, no problem.

tomato you accused me of being a scammer too when i was just getting started.  ive paid bcb in paypal  and have 100% repayment history on btcjam  on a total of about 9 different loans.

you are a worthless trolling piece of shit.   your comments and accusations do not help the community.   you call everyone who is new a scammer.

All positive flags if someone was researching a trade or loan to you.

But in my opinion a scammer is someone who does not uphold their side of a trade, or repay a loan with in the specified time and does not make agreed upon efforts to extend the time frame.

And you can only be a scammer AFTER this event occurs.

Unfortunately many members troll the newbee and lendor boards and and cry scammer anytime they seek a loan or want to pay with Paypal

easily 2/3 of my trades are with newbees who come here to check out bitcoin and are making there first small purchase.  and 99.9% of them were not scammers.

EDIT: The other .1% refuse to provide any verication and usually go on to scam other.  Coincleaner and other.  (I actually started a WATCH LIST for just this reason but unfortunately is did not receive much attention).

So it is one thing to be cautious and warn user, but it is also not very productive, or friendly or welcoming to automatically accuse new members just because they fit some predefined profile.

Do not accuse unless you learn about someone.

Which makes me wonder what tomatoe's purpose is in patrolling the lending section.  (He also paTROLLs hardware for sale.)

If I have time (like a weather day today) i'll skim all the threads and if I see suspect behavior I'll call it out.    I'm not a lender or a borrower, but the is just too much riff raff on this board.  An it my opinon it is up to the member to police the boards becuase it seem the admins won't (unless it involves a personal feud).

I asked for a few bucks twice because 10-50$ might be small but it is still money, and the people lending still make a small profit. What is the big deal? It is a win-win for both most of the times.

They get the Money when they need it, and the loaners make some money. WIN WIN
