most people use it to spoof mac addresses for free internet access. ISPs are starting to combat this though. I had the cable company show up at my door with a sheriff once.

what does the modified firmware and jtag of the modems do?  i may be interested

Modified firmware is officially used for diagnostics and troubleshooting. Google "sb5100mod" for other purposes that I will not be responsible for.
