I am doing for hobby reasons, I think you will loose as much as you gain just in the transit back and forth to me so I don't necessarily think it is a good idea.

So if I remove the factory-installed 12MHz crystal and install your 16MHz crystal, and change the resistor (which resistor?) to bump the voltage I guess, would I expect to see it run at ~444MHz?

This is hard if you do not have the right tools.  I will attempt it later this week on one of mine and report the results.
