Considering the fact that Cartier was one of the first wristwatches for men in the early 1900s, it is not alsways the first brand that comes to mind when looking for a mechanical timepiece.

During the 1970s and 1980s, the Santos models -- preferably in the gold/steel combination -- did very well amongst drug barons in South America and movie stars in Hollywood. Cartier also did well with accessories like pens and glasses. Remember Christopher Walken wearing the gold Cartier glasses in the James Bond flick A View to a Kill?

What most people don't know is that Cartier also has a separate haute horlogerie collection with the most stunning timepieces and mechanical movements. This collection goes by the name of Cartier Collection Privee Paris and falls into the same category of some of the other well-known high-end watch manufacturers.

Cartier's regular lineup of watches still includes a few Santos models, but these are lacking an in-house movement. With the Calibre de Cartier series, Cartier takes aim at those men who care about aesthetics as well as mechanical movements.

Introduced in 2010, this is the first watch caliber in the company's history, designed specifically for the men's "sports" market, and it's the first that's equipped with an automatic mechanical movement crafted entirely in house at its La Chaux-de-Fonds workshop in Switzerland.

In this way, Cartier has closed the gap between itself and other big-name watch manufacturers by selling watches with in-house movements in a competitive price range.

Wearing a Calibre de Cartier watch will give you absolute credit amongst watch enthusiasts. For a long time, Cartier timepieces for men were only about design, with the exception of the Cartier Collection Privee Paris timepieces.

The 42mm Calibre de Cartier, with its caliber 1904-PS MC movement, does not stand out of the crowd, but is very classy and sophisticated that makes you stand out in the crowd, and certainly is a looking good watch. The design elements are typically Cartier: big Roman numerals on the upper half of the dial and stick markers on the lower half. The large date aperture is often debated on online watch discussion boards

The large diameter, fat lugs and big crown guard are elements that can be found on a number of other brands as well, but the synthetic spinel cabochon on the crown definitely identifies this watch as a Cartier.

Is there something we don't like about this watch? Nothing it is amazing!

All in all, we think the Calibre de Cartier is the most interesting timepiece from Cartier's current regular collection of watches.

The in-house movement introduced with the Calibre de Cartier in 2010 has proved itself, It is a pretty straightforward movement, with a full-size rotor finished with Côtes de Genève. The bridge is finished with the same decoration as the rotor, and the main plate has been circular-grained.
Cartier remains a high-end luxury brand that puts a lot of effort in designing products in such a manner that they will continue to be stylish for years to come.
