I see that I can add YIM, AIM, MSN (none of which I use anymore) to my profile, but there is no option for XMPP (commonly known as Jabber).

Since this is the only popular FOSS IM protocol and the only decentralised one as well, it'd be nice to have it as an option.

I'm a FSF associate for month already :-) and I've obviously been talking about BTC pledges on the channel. The message is (PDPC's too): the more, the better.

BTW, it might sound cheesy and even ad-like to some of you, but when I talked to PDPC (FN organisation) staffers, I said that our start-up (that will heavily rely on Bitcoin BTW) may spare them of hassle of dealing with BTC, J. agreed that it might be interesting and I guess that FSF[E?] staff might like it too. BTW, we're hiring (telecom joint (Google replacement ;-D) here, and a guy who've posted in this topic may prove that we *are* real and will pay in Bitcoin to the interested. PM me for details.

Why is this Thread in Local>Other ?
It should be in Off-Topic.

@hook: I know that's OT, but: Do you have any idea how to get the FSFE to accept bitcoin donations?  Roll Eyes

AFAIK they're still thinking about it. But maybe if more people would pledge to donate via Bitcoin, it'd be easier.

E.g. I've seen quite a few people with their own XMPP servers, where their e-mail and XMPP addresses were identical. So if you skip the protocol bit in the URI your system can't tell one from the other.

It sure can, since you would indicate your email in the "Email" field, and your Jabber address in the "JID" field.

Clearing any doubt: I'm only talking about your profile on this forum here, of course. The general case obviously needs URIs, which is the very reason of URIs' existence.

I don't think so, since the other IDs don't have a protocol. If you're already reading/filling the "IRC" field, there's no need to repeat the protocol. Something like "bob on freenode" or "[email protected]" might be sufficient. Same for JIDs.

I don't think [email protected] is valid. Also the whole idea of URI's is that they're unique. Cut them up, and they're not.

BTW, the defined URI scheme for XMPP is xmpp:[email protected], not xmpp://[email protected] (reason: it's an identifier, not a location).

You are right there. My bad.

While we're at it, should we use URIs for those?

e.g.
irc://irc.freenode.net/hook ← user "hook" at server irc.freenode.net
xmpp://[email protected]

Another problem is that

Adding XMPP contact information here would be nice, as well as adding that for the other popular FOSS decentralised IM protocol - yeah, I mean IRC. There are numerous IRC networks indeed, but hey, there are numerous XMPP servers as well, so I guess that adding additional contact information such as alternate IM accounts for a given protocol might be good, too.
