I think that's the issue here, both Yanny and Laurel are potentially encoded in a wave file but the listener can only perceive one at a time when observation and decoherence occurs. Personally I hear the name "Laurel" but there seems to be some sort of controversy (started on Twitter) where some people seem to hear the name "Yanny". Last year there was a very similar controversy some of you may may remember "what colour is this dress?"; I saw a black & blue dress while some folks saw a white & gold dress.
