First it was "The Dress" on Tumblr, then the sensational "Laurel and Yanni" on Twitter, now stepping out form a dark corner of Reddit I present, "The Shoe".

Most people see grey & teal, some folks see a pink & white, while personally I see a pink & teal. What colour is this shoe?

In fact, the record contains only one name - Laurel, and the other is just an illusion, a kind of side effect of the work of our hearing aid and brain.

Professor Brad Story of the University of Arizona, an expert on speech, languages and hearing aids, conducted a small investigation, during which the only correct name was found.
The pronounced word "Yanni" has about the same wave characteristic as the "Laurel". His wave also looks "up-down-up", but only with slightly different acoustic characteristics. The poor quality of recording and a few superimposed frequencies above 4.5 kHz is the reason that some people hear the word "Yanni".

Also, the human brain plays a big role here. You hear what you expect to hear.

The brain is always trying to reduce energy costs, which means it is easier for him to recognize the sound you already know, than to decipher the new one.

Do not forget about the function of filtering sounds: a man can adjust to the waves he needs. For example, in a noisy cafe, we can listen to the words of friends sitting at the table, or we can overhear the conversation behind our backs. So it is with frequencies: from the already existing experience, the brain chooses which focus to concentrate on.

Some people can also hear the names of Yanni and Laurel at the same time, since their brain expects high frequencies, but it is also ready for low frequencies.

Finally, conduct a simple experiment: listen in order two audio recordings.

The recording under the name Noisy will seem to you some kind of unpleasant screech without any sense. When you listen to the second, clean record, go back to the first one. Now distinguish between a voice among seemingly meaningless gnashes? That's how the brain works: he hears the already known and expected

These have always amused me because I've always wondered how do people get the other result. Even if I try I don't get it. I hear Yanny but I always suspected that it's because I saw the name "yanny" first, and with the dress I only see white with a slight tint of purple and gold

why not both?

I think that's the issue here, both Yanny and Laurel are potentially encoded in a wave file but the listener can only perceive one at a time when observation and decoherence occurs. Depending on the listeners ability to perceive certain frequencies the recording will default to and become entangled with only one of the names.

The controversy here is that two people in the same room listening to the same recording can potentially be listening to different tracks, hearing different names and even viewing different waveforms when the wave file is graphed. Do you see the issue here, two people side by side each experiencing a different physical reality?

Now I suppose I may have taken theorycraft too far here and the recordings of two names were mixed together in a single wave file and both are present when the waveform is graphed. The issue is that when two recordings are mixed they sound mixed and you can hear both names not just one or the other.

It's Yanny in a high-pitched voice and Laurel in a low-pitched voice played simultaneously. Which voice you hear depends on whether you are better at hearing high frequencies or low frequencies.

It's not like the dress at all, which is in fact a black and blue dress that was photographed incompetently. Nobody who has ever seen an overexposed photograph should be confused about it.

So they're both playing but we can only perceive one at a time, correct?

Are you aware of the double slit experiment (rhetorical question)? I seem to be able to draw a parallel between the theoretical particle and conscious observation here; the names are in a state of superposition (or a Gaussian wave in more conventional terms) and your conscious observation then becomes entangled with only one of two possibilities causing only one name to materialize.

You may wish to re-think your conclusions on the dress, I suspect a similar situation is occurring with the colours; the implications being as profound as they may be.

The audio experts explain why people can hear different sounds.

The secret is from frequency. Part of the sound that causes people to hear Yanny is the high frequency while those who hear Laurel is low frequency.

Watch the following video then cast your vote on what name you hear.

Do you hear "Yanny" or "Laurel"? -- https://youtu.be/KM38OFDKU20 (0:41)

Personally I hear the name "Laurel" but there seems to be some sort of controversy (started on Twitter) where some people seem to hear the name "Yanny". Last year there was a very similar controversy some of you may may remember "what colour is this dress?"; I saw a black & blue dress while some folks saw a white & gold dress.

"The Dress"

It still looks blue & gold, oh what!!! wait a minute...
