I think people have said enough about this topic and it hasn't clearly gained enough traction. I'll lock this thread now. Thanks guys for letting me know what you think about this.

Unfortunately, the old ranks were considered the basis for the construction of the Merit system so it is considered as if you deserved those Merits because you met the requirements of that rank before the activation of the merit system and therefore that statement is true.
The upgrade requirements were amended in January of last year and therefore the accounts *before that date* have the right to get those Merits because they meet the requirement of ranks.
The only injustice was for some legendary members who were given 500 Merits as a gift.

Airdropped merits were not simply given as a gift, relatively, they were earned to some extent.
I once came across a post by theymos on how the merits were distributed, with emphasis on accounts which were active closer to the period of the merit system introduction.
Those members contributed to the growth of the forum, and majority of their post were already buried under and may otherwise have not gotten any merits
As such, I don't see the point of separating the merit count to show the distinction.

There's no point in changing what's in that link since only the account owner can see it (after clicking "+Merit");
simply because new accounts aren't aware of the old system and in alternate viewpoint, old users know that those aren't all earned merit.

If the total earned merit really needs to be displayed,
the "merit" link in the profile is the one needs polishing as it only displays the last 120days whilst the total above only indicates the sum of airdrop and earned merit.

The thing is that for the forum, what matters is the total merit you have (airdropped + earned). This is what matters for our ranks, so there is no reason to put only the earned in there. That's what BPIP is for.

This. On the top of my head, I don't think there's that much demand for knowing a certain user's actual earned merit in the first place; hence we have BPIP: a separate website to view certain statistics for the minority of people that are interested in looking at the numbers.

I think separating airdropped/earned merits aren't really that bad, but next thing you know we would get topics from people asking how to obtain airdropped merits.

I've posted this long ago in another thread, but applies for here as well

Instead of having so many different coins under the name isn't it better just to add the earned merit to the airdropped like :

Merit: 10+256

Or total merit/earned merit - this will save more space Wink

Merit: 266/256

Another thought is to replace the airdropped merit with a symbol. Like platinum coin for 1000, golden for 500, silver for 250 etc.

It has been raised and discussed so many times. As my best knowledge, most of discussions end with like/support for ideas to display merit as following methods:
- Received merits/ Total merits: 100/ 1100
- Total merits/ Received merits: 1000/ 100
With bold or colors for received merits.

This.  Breaking down your merits into earned and airdropped only creates more confusion for newbies, and IMO it really doesn't matter all that much.  From Jan. 2018 on, no new member is getting any airdropped merits and as the number of members continues to grow, it's going to be a relic of the pre-merit system that fewer people will even understand.

Eh.  I guess I just always like looking at my total number of merits and not worrying about how many I actually earned from other members.  The 1000 I got as a gift I can always subtract in my head if I need to--but I don't ever feel the need to.  Legendster, you're thinking about this too much.  Lol.

I can't argue there. BPIP is a fine insight into individual profiles since the stats got blocked. But still, I would prefer something that was built into this forum. But thanks for letting me know what you think. I wonder what the majority consensus is here.
Maybe (just maybe) theymos can add total merits and earned merits. But solely earned merits isn't going to work.

E.g: you have earned 200 merits and have a total of 500 merits.

2. Decaying airdropped merits if no merit is earned (For example if you don't receive any merit for a month, you will lose 10 airdropped merits)

Too much work.

I don't know whether agree that the rank of users is affected too or you only want received merits to be shown instead of total merits without any change in ranks.
Anyway, here are my suggestions.
1. Showing received merits at bottom of total merits
2. Decaying airdropped merits if no merit is earned (For example if you don't receive any merit for a month, you will lose 10 airdropped merits)

That's what it reads on my Merit page.

You have received a total of 716 merit. This is what determines your forum rank. You typically cannot lose this merit. You have 0 sendable merit (sMerit) which you can send to other people. There is no point in hoarding sMerit; keeping it yourself does not benefit you, and we reserve the right to decay unused sMerit in the future.

But the reality is, I have only received only 214 merits as of today and sent out 351 merits (but that's not the point)

So, what I am suggesting is: To exclude the airdropped merits from the merit count, so that only the actual received merits get counted and displayed. (like on BPIP).

I'm sure this is not a problem for new accounts that were created post the merit system introduction, so I don't think this would be a priority feature request. How many of you think this should be done?
