The best thing you can do is mine powercoin. It has very low difficulty with your laptop you can get up to 3000 powercoin per day.

You can always mine with your CPU of integrated amd gpu bit you wont make any money worth mentioning.

He'll kill his laptop before he finds a single coin. These things are not made to run 100% 24/7.

0.5 bitcoin /week? You would need about 3000 GHash/s right now. That translates to about 10 ASICMINER USB Miners. So about 2000 dollars. Expect the required Hashrate to raise significantly within the next weeks.

But can I use an old laptop to mine bitcoins/litecoins and how much $ would I need to invest before I could make 0.5 bitcoins p/w if im getting free electric off my landlord ? Any info or pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
