Might be relevant to a newcomer but had the same problem today:
Hadn't sync my wallet for about a month (I had 1.0.11). Tried lots of times to get it to fully sync (deleted entire blockchain [everything in the C:/Users/*User*/appData/Roaming/ZCash folder EXCEPT wallet.dat and peers.dat] and tried re-syncing from the very beginning) but nothing would stop me getting an error when the blockchain was trying to sync past 19th Dec 2017.
Finally uninstalled 1.0.11 and installed 1.0.12 and it is working fine now. Fully synced to the network.

Look into C:\Users\---USERNAME---\AppData\Roaming\Zcash\chainstate\LOG
You'll see smth. like this:

In following case delete 000816.log and restart zcash4win

It didn't work. I tried deleting zcash.conf and restarting the wallet the same thing. Now I delete Zcashparam folder with verifying key, now it opens and it waits to download the file again, proving key. I have not touched the wallet.dat
Can I install another wallet zcash and import this into that one ? Is this possible ? I hope it is, so any other zcash wallet except zcash4win ?

Whenever I try to launch the client I see the error in the picture below, it is a shame as I have quite a few funds in Zcash there and I don't know how to retrieve them. Any suggestions what to do ?
