I would not mind  changing my main account name if just to draw less attention to myself.
Many people have done this recently. You should send theymos a PM and explain your reasoning. I'm not sure if there is some sort of threshold for having this done but you would likely be able to adjust it. You would then likely want to go and change up your youtube/google name so that it doesn't tie in as much as I know you've got a bunch of videos in posts and reviews.

I sent a pm asking to change this account name. Basically  I am getting a lot of  external  grief started in 2019  and still going on.

Here is an email today

I have no idea whom the person is so I left out the sender email.
I get two or three emails a week.
I get pm's
I was doxxed on badbuyer . org
I am looking to reduced  the impact of this signature as I fear for my family's safety.

Many members join the forum with random names, but after a while, they decide to continue using these accounts, especially after updating the merit system, wouldn't it be possible to change the (Username/Name) manually using the same system that made the rank-up difficult "Merit system."?

The easiest thing I can think of it is the possibility to change the username against 500 Merits from the points that you acquired.
in other words, whenever you gain 500 Merits you can change the name for once.

The reason for the proposal is that obtaining more than 500 Merits for many members is useless or without any advantages.

What do you think of this proposal? any Update?

Bad idea. Whatever is the name for anyone here, it has become a brand name for him. If he or she is popular , then people would have remembered his username. Forum members are known by the usernames and no one is interested to know the real name of the persons. Secondly changing the usernames will only allow confusion and nothing else.

If someone has a legitimate reason for a name change then our forum admin will do that with no issues few people did that recently but allowing name change feature after certain merit earned then chances of merit abusers to get the advantage of that user to hide from their original previous name.

I don't think that we should do it this way, but I think users should be able to change their name if they wish and theymos granting a few recently is only going to make more people want it and it's quite unfair when certain members get it but not others. I've suggested in the past that username changing should come as a perk with new donator ranks. Maybe the names have to be staff-approved first but I would be surprised if someone would throw away potential hundreds of dollars just on the off chance that they might be able to dupe someone. There could be some sort of warning feature when a user has recently changed their name like we have when someone changes passwords or whatnot as well.

hope such application is not done in the future.  because if it is done it will make it easier for Scammers to change their username and imitate the names of members who have high trust in this forum.  as the case below.

let the current policy be the final decision, so no one is impersonating else's username.  even if there is still it from the members who just registered.

Did that user change his name? Anyone can try sign up with a similar-looking username but the likelihood of them being successful is very slim.

Theymos said the forum doesn't need money, so paying a small fee doesn't help anyone.

Give it to charity. Or me.
As hilariousandco suggested I don't think only warning in his profile will be enough.

In case of username change there should be a symbol behind that username. That way no one able to trick anyone with a changed username.

Changing username like that wont be a bright idea but if the admin has the time to code then he can allow users to add custom title if they are spending merits and it will be another interesting factor for users who are having a ton of merits and people would like those challenges to keep things interesting.

So, of if i have 500 merits i must spent that merits of i want to change name ?
What about the rank ?
It will impact your rank too if you are not having enough merits if it is implemented and hence it will be a rare credit for users who are dedicated to the forum. Once again allowing people to change the username is not a great idea but it can be allocated for custom title.

What is that mean 500 merits  you can change name in one time ?

Basically not that you'll spend the 500 merits you've earned just to change your username as I've understood on the OP, it just suggested that if you hit the 500 merit mark you can change one time your username not that you'll lose your sMerits for that. In regards to rank, I guess it doesn't matter if you're Full Member or even lower than that at least you've gained the 500 merit requirements you can change your username as the OPs suggestion. Well, it isn't a bad suggestion at all but there are risks to observe.

For passive user's like me, i agree  Cheesy
But, i don't know with another user's like a seller in here who already get good reputation and then change their name.
But if add history the name before it will great.

A better suggestion can be requiring users to have 500 merit + paying a fee (which is much lower than 50 BTC) for username change. but again the previous username should be shown under the current one for a while, so it doesn't make other users confused.

Yeah, we must making many requisite for change name
In my opinion people usually want to change their name to avoid the crime they do. But, some of them want to change for the better name. Little suggestion, the users who have bad trust cannot change their name. If there is a account have good trust and bad trust, the good trust should have greater amount than the bad trust to allowed change the name.

So, my conclusion to change the name is :
1. Have 500 merit
2. Paying a fee
3. Shown previous username on under the current name
4. Good trust > Bad trust

I appreciate your ideas  Cheesy But in the case of this forum, the reputation of many people is very important, changing the name can make many others unrecognizable. Moreover, the name change also causes a few problems related to scams. Suppose a celebrity has just changed their name, then another guy replaces his name and cheats on people who don't know  Roll Eyes Or create a similar, confusing name to cheat or take advantage of reputation to work, it really causes a lot of disturbance of the forum  Roll Eyes

We should start off with theymos' statement on that.
Each user has a display name, which is the only name ordinary users see, and a username, which is what you use to log-in with. Almost always, they are the same.

If I change a name for reasons of appearance, then I only change the display name. The username remains reserved, the user can still login using the username, PMs can still be sent to that username, "search member" allows searching for the old username, etc.

If I change a name for reasons of privacy, then I change both the username and the display name. In this case, it is possibly hazardous to reserve the old username, since it allows someone to test for the existence of that username, possibly defeating the privacy benefit. If you're worried about being impersonated, then simply don't seek to have your username changed.
The correct terms are:
  • Username: what the forum uses to manage your account.
  • Display name: what you see
Changes:
  • For appearance: Only display name will be changed.
  • For privacy: both username and display name will be changed.
Search results (using formerly username as keyword):
  • Only display name changed: you will find results presented with new display name
  • Both display name & username changed: you will no longer find that user. *
*: In case you find any user with formerly username as keyword, it is a newly created account, a fake one with different userid). It might be a scammer, or troller, etc.

As I understood, the forum manages your account based on three indicators, at least:
  • User name
  • Display name
  • User ID

For the OP' suggestions:
I don't think it should be applied because by now, username changes have been done manually by admin, it has not been an automatic process. I also doubt that the forum will never have an automatic process for it due to so many things around, such as: security, privacy, database, and more.

Lastly, most or all (?) of recent username/display name changes come from normal users (neither donators nor VIP members). From that you can see the fact most or all of those cases done as a kind of genorosity or priviledge from theymos, it has not (and might never been) a right for forum users.

Think of it as a free, VIP/donator feature, they paid about 50BTC for the possibility to change the username and you can get it for 500 Merits, they paid money to develop the forum and you participated using your effort, time and high-quality posts.

This feature will be the best thing to have if you're planning to scam people,or if you are high ranking old scammaz. The feature should be given to those who donated bitcoin to the forum.
No, it is about Merits, not activity.

Am I the only one who thinks it's fine the way it is?
The current system is very time consuming, and there are no drawbacks to making it automatic. Remember we are talking about the Name.

The username created when registering for the first time in this forum is your unique code or identity.
Only the display name will be changed, you are still having the username.

Nah, I share the same opinion. It would also result in more work for theymos if he had to code the system to present users with a unique address, and then its the logistics of verifying that data.
Time will be much less than manual modification.

I would say NO to changing username feature on the forum, as it makes the forum world more harder to be friendly and identifiable to everyone. Even makes the overall experience on the forum confusing to many.
Users can still search for you using the username. The only thing that will change is the display.

Again, this forum focuses on the quality of posts and not on those who participate.

A clearly NO from e also , because as already said and written it would be abused maybe from others !
I don't think someone who spends a lot of time getting 500 Merits will be misused (Scammed/Spamming/..etc)

In my own opinion, it will depend on the username and that is a case to case basis. For example, a member changing the name from killyou72 and now the user's username is FFrankie. That now sounds good and better compared to the previous username, killyou for me is not good to the reader's eye, just like threaten or will harm someone in retribution.

Just like @hacker1001101001, but it doesn't mean that the user is a hacker. (sorry mate just an example of mine)

Edit: Yes, this proposal might be abuse.

Sharing my two cents.

Theymos said the forum doesn't need money, so paying a small fee doesn't help anyone. Theymos needs to spend time on this, and lately he's granted a few wishes for name changes. Great! Let's leave it at that.

Nah, I share the same opinion. It would also result in more work for theymos if he had to code the system to present users with a unique address, and then its the logistics of verifying that data. Ultimately, it would result in a lot more work for theymos which isn't necessarily a in demand request, and when the forum isn't in need of money it wouldn't be worth that additional time spent on this.

if the username change is applied Will make other members confused and create new problems that will occur. For example, people who reach 500 merit can change their username with the same username with the name "Loycev" like "LoycevFox" "LoycevMobile1" "Loycevv".
Username changes allow users to abuse the feature to commit SCAM and fraud in forums with other people's names.

The username created when registering for the first time in this forum is your unique code or identity.
