In general, its hard for me to give out merits if I can't understand the texts due to different languages.
I do not make the effort to translate but usually skip these posts. There are enough contributions that are written in English and are merit-worthy.

The main problem of posts that make it difficult to get Merits indeed lies in the text that is difficult to understand due to language differences. Hamza2424 is not the only one who experiences this, I myself feel that the problem you mentioned for Hamza2424 is also found in me, who is not a native English speaker and even rarely uses English on a daily basis.

However, we have tried our best and will continue to fix the problems that make it difficult for others to understand the text.

Added some merits to this posts which where written in english.
The post from Unknown Op doesn't fit in my personal merit criteria, looks like a c+p post from Google or something like that. I also tried a translator and the result doesnt even make sense for me at all.

Besides that my sMerits are always very limited anyway and I do not want to distribute randomly to any people... since a nice formatting of the text is then also not enough! Cheesy

Lately I've had bit of trouble getting a lot of merit because maybe my posting habits. I'm not merit source, but my desire to help local board users earn enough merit to rank up is still what I've been trying to do so far.

I have a few regular posts that I update once a month about my local board stats, so if you think this post deserve some use from you, please review them. But I hope this is not begging, and this is purely because of my desire to contribute to my local users who still need support to rank up.

Please note, all posts may have received a certain amount of merit. But if you think this is really not worth it, then you can ignore me.

We've probably got our wires crossed somewhere, because I can't reconcile you agreeing with post #2 (in that thread) with you taking issue with my post (which is just a high-effort restatement of the same idea: that you shouldn't expect the shadow to get bigger).

I think we're taking different views on the question. I like your framing of the problem in terms of heat transfer, but my post was only concerned with (idealized) shadow length. I think it's one of those occasions where you're concerned with what the OP was really asking, whereas I'm concerned with what the OP was actually asking.

My post started with a snip from the OP that amounts to (paraphrasing): "If I lift a 10 ft by 10 ft tarp, 10 ft into the air (at noon) how big would the shadow be?". And the rest of that post is basically justification for my answer: ~10.0000000002 ft (squared).

Viewed through that lens, I think it's sensible to ignore the size of the sun, because it plays no significant role in understanding why the shadow size increases by such a small amount (in fact, it's likely to confuse the issue, with edge softening that makes gauging "size" more difficult).

The fact that light arriving from more than one position "eats" into the shadow cast by light arriving from a chosen position doesn't affect the underlying relationship [1] that predicts how shadow size varies with distance (to see why this is true, you can always decompose any light source that is not itself a point source — all realistic lights, then — into a swarm of new point sources, and the size of the individual shadows cast by each of these new lights will be governed by the same relationship).

[1] Which (to be clear) is more general than the one I special-cased for an overhead sun.

I'm quoting it here from another topic
Sorry for being off-topic in my own topic. My intention was to post this here, but I failed. Since PowerGlove responded here, I'll reply once more:

you can take that exclusion to mean: "Treating the sun as a point".
That's my point: it's okay to ignore small influences, but this simplification completely changes reality.

It's a shown-work argument to help the OP (in that thread) understand why their intuition was faulty (that the shadow would get appreciably bigger as the tarp was lifted)
OP wanted to reduce heat input. The interesting part is that none of our discussion matters for that: the tarp will absorb a certain amount of sunlight, and that sunlight won't reach earth. It doesn't really matter if it's a sharp shadow or slightly less sunlight on a very large surface, the result is the same: less heat input.

Okay, I see the problem. I thought you found something wrong with the trigonometry.

I specifically excluded "soft shadow effects" from my analysis:

My trigonometry is pretty rusty, but here is how I would think about the problem (ignoring the curvature of the earth and soft shadow effects):

Because soft shadow effects are caused by the size of the sun (i.e. there would be no penumbra if the sun were a point) you can take that exclusion to mean: "Treating the sun as a point". What I actually had in mind with that exclusion was: "Treating the sun as a point and ignoring contributions from other light sources" (i.e. bounce lighting), but the simpler version covers the problem you have.

Does that make sense?

It's a shown-work argument to help the OP (in that thread) understand why their intuition was faulty (that the shadow would get appreciably bigger as the tarp was lifted), and I think it did a pretty good job of quantifying something that had only been alluded to by the other posters (i.e. the sun is so far away that the rays are nearly parallel).

Anyway, thanks for getting back to me, and sorry for the weird derail. Smiley

PowerGlove asked me to explain this post, so I'm quoting it here from another topic:
your post is wrong Tongue So I've Merited decodx and odolvlobo.
Hah! Really? If you can spot a mistake then please PM me about it (or maybe post in that thread) and I'll fix it!
I gave a hint already by saying who I Merited. I'll use this part to explain:
Even if you placed the tarp as far away as the moon (about 1.3 billion feet) the shadow would still be ~10.027 feet (i.e. the shadow would only be bigger by about 1/3 of an inch).
Imagine looking at the sun, and 400,000 km (I don't do "feet") away, right between you and the sun, is a tiny tarp. That doesn't put you in the shadow of the tarp, because the sun (from where you're standing) looks much bigger than the tarp. The light passes the tarp from all sides, so there is no shadow.

This picture explains it:
Image loading...
If the tarp is low, the "total eclipse" is what we know as a shadow. If the tarp is high, there's only a "partial eclipse", and if it's high enough, you won't even notice that at all (because if blocks only a tiny fraction of the light, and the "partial eclipse" covers a very large surface area on earth.

You know that self-satisfied feeling when you're sure that you've made a good post and are about to be merited for it? Well, sometimes that feeling is lying to you... Cheesy
You'll get used to it Tongue My expectations about which posts get Merited often don't match reality.
In this case, because it's in Off-topic, it's not really surprising. That board is mostly used by spammers.
