Read a copy of 'so you've been publicly shamed' by Jon Ronson. That goes into some useful details about how to bury nasty info about you on the internet. The dude interviews some famous twitter pariahs.

Not sure if this has been advised before but hire a attorney and file  a case of defamacy against the news paper.Set up a trail and on the basis of attorney's decision you might have to shell out a few bucks but it will all be sorted in the legal possible way instead of non-persistent methods on the internet.

Come on whos going to want to change their name just to get rid of a shitty possession article. If charges were dropped then just phone up the editor himself and tell him if its not removed then you will be taking matters further. If you werent convicted then its libel which is a serious matter if you were to get a lawyer involved, especially since it seems to be affecting your livelihood.

Man that's a tough one. If you were in Europe you'd be able to take advantage of "The right to be forgotten" but no luck with that in the USA.

https://www.bing.com/webmaster/tools/eu-privacy-request

An indirect improvements would be to create good looking web pages (Linkedin, about.me, elance etc.) with your name and try to rank them higher than that newspaper article so at least the bad looking side is covered a little better.
I used it from usa to remove my fb page from search results . Just tell them you live in europe that is all

Yeah but AFAIK it will only hide the result for european visitors.

so you meant to give out money to hack into that website and remove your name Grin ,if they have good security measures they can still hunt your ass down for that ,because you are giving them ample evidence for that matter Wink unless that local newspaper gives you the justice you wanted i guess nothing can be done, and still i think you can take the legal approach ,(defamation) , if the case was solved .  thats the only possible solution. find a lawyer and send a legal warning regarding the issue, i am sure they will take measures rather than you negotiating  Cheesy

It should be easier to get it removed if you bribe someone at the newspaper to do it for you.

Except there's no legal way to compel a bribed removal to be permanent. Could be restored from a backup, the bribe-taker could demand more $ for continued removal...

Hey,

I need someone that can help me remove my name from a local online newspaper. I got busted for possession when I was a freshman (more than 5 years ago), and my name was put on the daily "police beat" section of the college newspaper. http://www.purdueexponent.org

The link to the entry is the first thing that shows up as soon as you google my name. I've dealt with the issue, the case was dropped, and I have truly paid the price. However, this entry is still haunting me. I tried calling the newspaper and they refused to help me. If you have any advice on how I can deal with this please let me know.

Surely it would be far cheaper and easier to legally change your legal name by deed poll, you only need a number of certificates which you send to all companies who hold info on you, forgetting the state obviously the less those criminals know the better Wink

You can work on SEO and 1. Have some personal website or personal page and try to improve their link 2. Try to downgrade the link to your name in collge newspaper.

How effective could that be? Could i realistically move this from the first page? Could u help me do that?
It can remove you from the first page of google search, I mean doing some other tasks. You may follow other tasks too.

If you absolutely won't retain a lawyer first, even a low-cost or free one http://www.indianalegalservices.org/ ...

Write something like this as a letter to the editor (http://www.purdueexponent.org/site/forms/online_services/letter/letter_editor_imported-1299271094) and if it doesn't get published, submit it to other local newspapers:

If you have had your name published in the police blotter section of the Purdue Exponent, but have not been convicted, and you believe you have suffered harm to your financial well-being, or any other harm, as a result, please contact (your contact info).

This is interesting. I did get convicted, but the case was discharged. I do believe this is causing significant harm because I cant find a job after graduation.

Why are u suggesting I post that? I already tried talking to editor and he would not accept.

If it is true that the case was dropped then they have no right to put your name on the crime list anymore ,you can sue them for libel ,but  first send them a written request through an attorney to take out your name, this is legal battle not seo or hacking issue they always have a back up of their site in case their site was hacked

If the case was dropped, I think your best chance might be to get the record expunged.

Depending on the situation, it may be a good idea to seek legal counsel.
