Sitting in the car & just had an idea, might be a shitty one but hear me out.

To further control the flow of shit posts & spamming would it be a good idea for each successfully reported post to earn the reporter 1 Merit point?

It would give newer members a chance to earn Merit without any prejudice that they're a new member? I don’t know if a mod could enable a script to add Merit automatically when a post has been successfully reported & nuked.

This might be an easier way for newer accounts to rank up whilst at the same time learning not to shit post.
This Merit could come from a forum/community pot.
There was something similar, in connection with copypasters:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/idea-a-merit-after-reporting-10-or-20-copypasters-3275350
The reason was the same, why not to implement this kind of reward system...
Interesting thing that "normal" users just simply don't think about how to abuse these kind of systems, but scammers do...

No, the does not match the definition of merit and is not what the system was designed for.

Not to mention that there are so many posts that could be reported, users would be ranking up in hours. lol

reporting posts to moderator is something like not littering the streets. You're not getting any praise for it, but it's the right thing to do.

Terrible idea. Not only this has been suggested tons of times, but the reason this isn't going to work is obvious:

1. Create 10 fake accounts and spam the forum.
2. Report your fake accounts spam.
3. Get 10 merits.
4. Repeat.
And that's exactly what would happen, because these idiotic shitposters can't earn merit by writing coherent posts (usually in English, but I doubt they have ability in any language) and would stab their own hairy-backed mothers in order to earn merit, so you know they wouldn't hesitate to create a zillion accounts to shitpost with and a zillion more to report those posts.

That would put the forum basically back at square one.  I don't think we need any "improvements" to the merit system--not yet, and probably not ever.

What we need is for DT2 members to remove their red tags on low level bounty cheaters under the condition of reporting accurately. just like when prisoners work their asses inside the prisons to redeem themselves.

I think it will not much effective. Every action has a reaction. Merit farmer and account farmer will get benifite from it by create new account. They can build multiple account for create shitpost/spam and report themself.
Only better way to prevent disable sign camp. for Jr. Members. So they will not spam anymore.
Unless we change our dirty mind it's very difficult to prevent spam. Main reasones is for spamming sign. camp.

I really don't understand what people think is wrong with the merit system as it is. I, and several others, have created a load of projects to help new members and the unmerited to gain merits. What has been the response? They won't get off their lazy arses to actual try to take part. All they do is to repeat extracts in the hope that they can suck up to the merit awarders.

The answer is to delete crap posts, and to force the pooposters to improve or to leave.

Another solution is to keep the bounty spammers in their underworld, and then maybe we can attract some new quality members.

I do not support your idea!
Because you already wrote above, it's vice versa will increase even more the multi accounts that will themselves spam and give reports to moderators.
And other remuneration for the control of spam will not result in nothing - just think how many people are on the forum and as many opinions on posts. Yes, moderators simply do not have enough hands to look at every complaint for spam.

I've expressed my opinions multiple times on this subject, and have done so recently here, however that post also addresses some of the issues related to the discussion specific for that thread. So I will give my general reason why this shouldn't happen.

Besides the reasons given above by multiple users. Merit isn't suppose to be a reward for contributing members or even members who are of "good" quality. Merit is a measure of a users ability to post good quality content. Reports do not support this, and represent something different entirely. Users who report without expecting a gain show a desire to improve the forum, and it's community, and as a result improves the readability for everyone.

Possibly users who report could be rewarded some other way; Like a thank you from the mods from time to time perhaps. But, reports shouldn't be rewarded with merit or monetary gain.

If we were to offer an incentive maybe a weekly leader board which is made public. This could be abused of course, but for no real actual gain. It would probably provide a incentive for those who are status hungry, although might prevent some users from reporting as much as they do, because they don't want the attention.

At it's very core it's not a bad idea rewarding those who report. But, merit certainly isn't the way to go about it. I'm not sure any system would help to be quite honest with you. If we don't care for the motives of people reporting, and only care that people are reporting then possibly the leaderboard or regular updated stats are the way to go about it. A

On the hypothetical that this was introduced, and you could get merit for reporting it certainly would need to be a higher threshold. Something like one thousand reports = 1 merit. That would likely deter those who want to abuse it, and would at the same time reward those who report anyway. Plus, if someone is abusing the report button a thousand times it should be pretty obvious to the staff team, and they could either issue reprimands out or remove the report button on a individual basis.

With your idea, i could earn lots of merit by visiting mega-threads or popular section among spammer and report majority of the posts Tongue

So, i'd disagree with your idea. Helping any forum should be voluntarily, don't expect any forms of rewards.

Hmm. Is it necessarily a bad thing if spam is getting reported? Despite the motives behind it? As long as the possibility of abuse is removed then reporting actual spam in hopes to get a small reward, but a reward nonetheless could be alright. (I'm referring to abuse as creation of alt accounts here)

1 thousand reports = 1 merit
or
5 thousand reports = 1 merit.

Then the motives for reporting should not be centered on gaining merit as it would be one hell of a headache to report that many posts. I would generally agree that there shouldn't be any rewards for reporting, but I wouldn't be 100% against it if the work required was a lot higher than the actual reward.

Users such as Lutpin who had like 10k reports? would have 10 merits or 2 merits respectfully which isn't too much of a big deal.

Maybe, we should implement a new stat that goes under merit "Snitch rating" Cheesy Nah, that could be a possibility though for those who want to have some credit for how much they report. A optional public display much like the posts/merit/activity displays. "Reports" or something along those lines.

This idea already been discussed before,I had your same idea and to be honest the answer I got was convincing, if you check you will find that there is users with huge amount of reported posts that means thousands of Merit so for sure they will pass even users like moderators and theymos himself . I hope that give you an image about what could happen if this idea got applied .

Let me give an example :
I will create a new account called invoking_v2 which will spam the forum and I will keep reporting each shitpost i will make.

You can imagine how merit farming will be the new trend (in addition to post farming)

I have the same question. This is exactly what we are talking about on this topic:
