Bitcoin is already too big to fail, even without mainstream adoption it will still be used for porn, gambling, tax evasion, hiding money from divorce attorneys  and a million other darknet uses....
That's what I think too but hopefully it transcends criminality because then price will hit full potential.

A pumpkin mines 27 hours a night

Are these examples of us helping Bitcoin, or of Bitcoin helping us? Bitcoin will survive on its own merits and doesn't require our evangelism.
I've put it so painly, if you still can't understand such a simple concept, I'm afraid there is no logic that you can comprehend. If all bitcoin companies closed down today, and no new ones replace them, bitcoin will die, period.

It would not die, but that is beside the point. A company's purpose is not to promote, it is to profit. Whether the CEO wants to promote Bitcoin or just wants to make a quick buck really doesn't matter. The end functionality is the same, and that functionality stems from the unfolding of this system, an unfolding which like the petals of the flower will attract the bees.

Well I guess there's something to both sides here. If there was no one improving Bitcoin and working on it constantly, its adoption will most likely seize to grow, and even go down again. But it's true, the beauty of Bitcoin is that everyone can participate, and it's in their own interest to help Bitcoin succeed, thus helping everyone else.

You seem to not understand the concept of mutual benefit. That bitcoin allows certain companies to exist, and allow the employees of the companies to profit does not exclude the possibility of bitcoin itself benefiting as well.

Remind my feeble mind how flowers reproduce? Bees do not collect pollen to promote flowers nor do they convene meetings with other bees on the serious topic of flowers. Perhaps you have insider information from the colonies that I am not privy to.

Whether bitcoin will "die" or not is really a matter of semantics, but to give an objective, quantitative measure, if all the work done around bitcoin stopped right now, then the number of users of bitcoin in a year will certainly be less than the number of users today. And it will never surpass the number of users today. Probably it'll be far less, with only a few collectors and die-hard libertarians still bothering with it, if it doesn't completely get destroyed by a 51% attack.

If you believe otherwise, you're delusional.

@Minerpumpkin: It depends on what you do. If you keep going on and on about how decentralization will save the world, cure cancer and find the meaning of life, yeah, you'll sound like a cultist. Actually, you are a cultist.

It's important to let people know about this potentially exciting technology, that, while not anywhere near mature or perfected, shows a lot of promise. Many bright minds are looking to improve on this technology and make it more user friendly, more accessible, and creating new uses for it. It may not be the best currency now, but it has a lot of room to grow.

We can dispel the misunderstanding that bitcoin is fake because it's just digital, or that it's only used by criminals and crazy libertarians. That's important.

I would be more confident of myself if I were you guys, and not leave all my hopes and dreams to luck/fate. Even if I know I don't currently have the knowledge or ability to create something like bitcoin, that doesn't mean I should just sit still and do nothing.

If you truly want to be "successful" financially, if you want fianancial freedom, you should work towards it even if there's only a 0.0001% chance of increase your odds.

If every single bitcoiner just sat there hoping for bitcoin to go to the moon, it'll die for sure. We need people to promote bitcoin, people to make bitcoin more accessible, people who explains what bitcoin is, people who can help make the technology more intuitive to use, and many, many more things that will increase bitcoin's chances of going mainstream. We can all do our own part, if only to introduce bitcoin as a serious topic to friends and family. Because you're not just helping bitcoin, you're helping your own chances at becoming wealthy.

I agree to a certain extent. Improving the Bitcoin ecosystem by building better services and making it more accessible to the regular person is the way to go. But we should definitely refrain from being preachy or intrusive to people around us - this isn't helping, it merely makes Bitcoin look like some weird cult or something!

Well I think it is safe to say at this point that we are all going to be millionaires.

No.

If BTC goes to the moon no need to still measure things in FIAT, so it would be the same as say you are a dogellionaire now.

If BTC doesn't go to the moon, then we won't be millionaires. At least not because of BTC.

Bitcoin doesn't need our help, and the day it does it has also failed.
Then it must have failed already.

If no one promoted bitcoin, how would anyone ever know about it, even the most cultist libertarians?

If no one created a bitcoin exchange, how would 99% of people get their bitcoins? Why would miners even mine something they can't sell?

etc.

I think most people have it wrong.

Why wait for the price to go up. Your focus should be launching projects that make more fiat money to buy bitcoin when chances are given to you. Everyones hoping for it to rise, but I aint no fortune teller or have a crystal ball.

You could launch something and make a massive fortune and then buy bitcoin like its water.
"could launch something and make a massive fortune"

You make it sound so easy.. but the truth is, it's probably easier to become a millonaire by holding a decent stack of BTC for 10 years, than comming up with an idea that goes viral and gives you millions in this ever increasingly competitive world.

I rather hold as well lol.

I think its better to hold the damn thing to see it grow then start any risky ventures, but I guess its more of a preference.

But, if you are rich like that it wont matter only if it does go viral, so safe bet is holding bitcoin.
Unfortunately that is the case, look at the statistics of all entrepreneurs that start new businesses.. making it a success is a long term race as well full of risk.
Might as well support a revolutionizing technology and be part of it and hope the rest of society gets it eventually, which would benefit us in a greater way because we took the risk of being there before than them.

What do you think? I think I might be close. I'm guessing $10,000 per bitcoin by then.

no, bitcoin will be replaced with sexcoin

Yup, I can see banks and VCs jump on to that bandwagon.  Roll Eyes

Trust me!
I guess the best way to go is still: Buy as many coins as you can afford to lose without going inane, put them in cold storage and then hold the hell our of them. Just forget about them and move on with your life. If this really matures, you end up with quite a nice retirement fund, if not... well move on with your life as initially planned Smiley

Retirement fund, yes. It might even help you with an early retirement.  Smiley

Yes, it could give you a fund big enough for an early retirement, if everything goes right. But this isn't a given, this is what a lot people forget, unfortunately. They believe it is inevitable that Bitcoin succeeds and achieves $10k+ in a couple years.
