Look for coins that are solid and you believe in.
Do your own research so that you really could decide which to buy

I would put most of it in the top ~10 coins of your choice, I don't think you can go wrong with BTC or ETH. BCH and LTC are a good 2nd choice.

The speculative amount would go to the alt coins between 11-100.  I think a total of 6-7 coins would be OK and that amount you can keep an eye on.

Would buy $1000-2000 on BTC, the rest would spend on the alts! That's what I would do! 

Only invest 50% of that in new coins put the remaining balance into either bitcoin or eth as they are the most stable and promising coins for long term holders.

50% long term hold in major coins you believe in
50% alt coins that are under 1 billion market cap, as there is major growth there

That will depend if you want something safe like top 25 coinds or more aggresive aproach.

Diversification will hedge you, a bit, against market downturns, investing in ICOs is also a fruitful method to increase gains. Be careful to watch for scams and remain diligent.

I kinda like that portfolio too myself, but in the end of the day the only time you made the "right choice" is if you invest into something you researched thoroughly and that you believe in. I suggest you start googling till your eyes turn red on all the coins and what they are meant for, who the team is, their background, how big the market is, how active the dev team and community is etc. A lot of these are actual businesses and there are still tons of undiscovered gems that arent in the top 100 yet im sure (be aware of the risk if you invest into something that is low market cap). 

In the end of the day, whatever you invest in will one day probably plummet and drop down a lot. If you just put your money into something someone else told you to then you will panic on that day and sleep with 1 eye open on coinmarketcap.  Diversification is a good way to avoid this though.
I think the best investments are the ones you yourself truly believe in. That said the portfolio Aardvark shared above looks good and is quite low risk. You should go research all these and check them out.

Lastly as a new crypto enthusiast, please mate be aware of the risks and manage it properly. I am sad when I see people taking loans on their homes and losing their money due to pump and dumps etc. You really don't need to put in a lot of money to do well in crypto. Knowledge is power, capital is not.

I would buy a bitcoin right now if I were you

I would have invest them in MinexCoin, and start parking them in the MinexBank.
Maybe I am wrong maybe I am right but 10k if was me I am putting them in there and staking in the bank for a long period, who knows what happens in future.

It's stable coin, transparent, decentralized, devs are active, team is transparent and you can find them anywhere, working on updates all the time, and having the most awesome banking algorithm in the crypto world.
My FOLIO is not big enough to know about every coin, but from my FOLIO coins I mostly recommend this coins MinexCoin with his own MinexBank, and in near future it's own MinexExchange.

See it try it, also you can invest in couple of coins if you want to hold for a long period. You never know when you can get lucky, the crypto world is like the wild west.

But what I mostly advise you to do your own research and to invest in coins with bright future, and active development and most important transparency on the team and ont he updates they are doing.
