I appreciate the update and the info Doc.  Yeah even having Bitminter roll over to solo mining when it goes down would be awesome imo.  I woke up yesterday morning freezing cause my miners were all down lol.  It was about 50F in my room cause I didn't have a backup plan setup.

I am working on setting up with a new hosting provider. I'm sorry that payouts are delayed, but no coins are gone and payouts will be running as soon as I have things working again on a new server.

Regarding attack IPs and the type of attack... it's the pure amount of traffic of these DDoS attacks that is the problem. You don't block that with (your own) firewall. And there's no point posting the source IPs. They could be fake for all I know.

And no, BitMinter client isn't lacking failover pools because I don't want people to use those. It's lacking them because adding support for that takes time. I have a very long TODO list and I try to get things done one at a time.

I would like to improve handling of ddos attacks, namecoin crashes, buggy miners that do "friendly fire" ddos, and other service instabilities. I'd also like to set up multiple mining servers, not because the load requires it, but because it adds to stability. And in case all that fails I would like to have failover pools for BitMinter client, and also solo mining as a failover option. First of all I need to get the service up and running again, though.

I think it's time to consider to implement the option of a backup pool in the Bitminter client.
+1
That would be a great addition to the Bitminter client.

i have asked for this in the past. the creator just doesn't seem to want his miner to be used with other pools.

i'm ok with it now. bitminter is convenient for me.

it's a great miner, and a great pool. i honestly wouldn't mine anywhere else.

i donate.

i can live without mining for a while.

it depends on location, my rooms are getting very cold without mining and its winter. Luckily it isnt so cold right now (only -10°C), but a week ago it was -20°C till -25°C, and without mining it would be VERY cold.

sounds like you need a backup heater. Smiley

A backup pool in the client could be designed so that it kicks in just when Bitminter is down. That's what I was thinking and proposing.

Additionally the developer could gain from it in several ways (either using a single account for the backup pool to get his slice, or by an agreement with the backup pool operator, or other ways, like letting use it only users who donate above a treshold).

I would be happy to pay a fee when I use it.

Was wondering why my room was getting chilly Cheesy. Hope you get back up and running soon.
Same, I'm cold here too Cheesy
I know of a host that can deal with DDoS, but they're pretty expensive then. I never had to do it myself, but as far as I understood to deal with DDoS you need to rent them a Cisco ASA router that they put in front of your server (one per server if you have several servers, obviously), and the cheapest comes at ~40€/month (+150€ installation fee).
They're pretty annoying too about who can buy from them: in my country's branch (which is actually the historical, central branch of the company), well they only accept customers from the country. They have a branch in UK, but I don't know about US. Actually, I just searched a bit and here's the US branch, the firewall isn't available yet there Sad : https://www.ovh.com/us/dedicated-servers/firewall_dedicated_servers.xml

Looks like we may be down a while. Also, I am looking for a new hosting provider, if anyone knows one that deals well with ddos attacks.

If anyone has difficulties setting up mining on a different pool while we are down, feel free to ask here, or in the newbie section at https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/bitmintercom-optional-custom-miner-pplns-merged-mining-newbie-friendly-22432 (if you have not been using bitcointalk before you are only allowed to post in the newbie section).

Doc,
Was the ddos UDP? If it was UDP it is a big mess. Very hard to deal with. Good luck with finding new provider..We are waiting for you Wink

NEED help with getting a backup pool. can  some one explain to me what to do to get one.
Suppose you wanted to set BitMinter as your primary pool and BTC Guild as your secondary.  If you were mining with 4 BFL Singles on COM3, COM4, COM5, and COM6, you could run a command like the following to accomplish your goal using CGMiner.

cgminer-fpgaonly.exe -o http://mint.bitminter.com:8332 -u YourUsername_WorkerName -p WorkerPassword -o mergedmining.btcguild.com:8332 -u YourUsername_WorkerName -p -1 -S \\.\COM3 -S \\.\COM4 -S \\.\COM5 -S \\.\COM6

The "-p -1" where the worker password is supposed to be on the secondary pool is to denote a null password, as I couldn't find any way to create worker passwords on BTC Guild.  If you need help using video cards, I'm sure there are others on the forum who can assist, but I've never use CGMiner with anything BFL products.

Good luck!

You can also add more Pools to your cgminer like I do.
In cgminer use [P]ool and then [A]dd the "back up" pool.
Use failover in the Pools mining strategy to mine at the backup pool when the main pool is down.
