Everything up and running again.

But will probably need to take some downtime soon, as a disk in a raid-1 array looks like it's dying.

BitMinter has been around for well over a year. Never missed a payout. Never had bundleware or malware in the client. If you feel uneasy using closed source software then cgminer is an excellent console (text mode) miner, or you can use GUIminer if you want a GUI.

Ive been here for a year and all is true...

I am using cgminer 2.7.5 I have restarted it just to make sure. But still i do not see anything related to X-Roll-Ntime. I guess it is not lunched yet. When X-Roll-Ntime is available for all of us i will ask you to confirm it here. Then will know that something is wrong with our setup and there will be no doubt that pool supports it.

No, it's not ready yet. I got the new version almost ready this weekend, but hit a snag. Having an issue with delayed response of pipelined HTTP requests. One of the new things is delaying response for extremely low efficiency miners to give priority to miners that are acting properly, in case of DoS attacks or bugs. I would like to still support pipelined requests, so I need to fix this. Hopefully working soon.

I will announce any changes here as they are made or before.

Are there any news/progress with roll-n-time support for cgminer?
Will this feature be available soon?

Should be done today I hope, but needs some testing too.

I hope it will be up and running sometime this weekend. We'll find out soon. Smiley

Ready 2 test!  Grin
Whenever it is implemented, you will see it in 2 places:

1) The E: on the top will go up - with a MiniRig you should get a VERY high number.
I get 1170% with a single BFL single - i.e. I generate on average 11.7 shares per getwork (i.e. 10.7 extra)

2) Also, if you look at the API "stats" command it will specifically tell you the pool's roll-n-time settings for the last getwork.
There are 4 fields:
Work Had Roll Time: If the last getwork actually had a "X-Roll-Ntime" header
Work Can Roll: if the header said it can roll (the header can also say it can't roll)
Work Had Expire: if the header correctly included an expire
Work Roll Time: the expire value (seconds)

Of course make sure you are using the latest cgminer to see all that.
(API stats pool roll info was added in 2.7.4)

I downloaded it anyway, keeping my fingers crossed, and I get a warning before I install it saying that it can screw up my computer. Finally it installs the "Ask" toolbar. I didn't say yes to it installing the "Ask" toolbar- I already have Java installed anyway.

The warning is standard for Java Webstart when you are running an app that needs full access to your computer. BitMinter client needs that or it can't access GPUs and serial ports. It's sandbox or no sandbox, and you can't mine in the sandbox.

The Ask toolbar is installed by Java, not BitMinter. When you install Java on Windows you have to be careful and remove the checkmark when you get to the page about the Ask toolbar. Don't click "next" too quickly. You can read about it, for example here: http://www.quora.com/Java-programming-language/Why-does-Java-for-Windows-include-Ask-Toolbar-nowadays

It's almost hard to believe Oracle would do this. But then you remember how greedy they are. Oh, that's right. Cheesy

BitMinter
I've used BitMinter on at least 10 different computers since I started mining here about a year ago.  I can safely say that the Ask Toolbar has never mysteriously (or purposely) been installed on any of the computers I've used to mine.

This. Anything else is just not true. But hey, let's try to blame it on BitMinter Cheesy

Something installed the extremely annoying "Ask Toolbar" on my computer. I'm wondering if you know anything about that?

i think that comes with java.  when you download anything and install, ALWAYS read what your accepting to install, dont blame bitminter....

yeah SgtMoth  you are correct java does that..    BTW very nice icon

to Maniac479 you can delete the ask tool bar  program.   I have installed it more then once along with other tag ons   also if you install catalyst watch what you agree to.

I do watch what I install. I don't think you can blame me. There's an entire thread called "Trust No One". This very thread's beginnings is all about how this mining software (Bitminter) isn't open source and so a bunch of people didn't install it. I downloaded it anyway, keeping my fingers crossed, and I get a warning before I install it saying that it can screw up my computer. Finally it installs the "Ask" toolbar. I didn't say yes to it installing the "Ask" toolbar- I already have Java installed anyway.

Bitminter is a great, easy to use program that was a relief to use after mucking around with the problematic guiminer disappearing window issue and difficult to use command line programs. Yet it is too intrusive for my taste. I like to be more in control of what's going on. However I finally got guiminer working again and I'm back to deepbit for now. I think guiminer is excellent- just a minor bug with that invisible window issue.

So you want a non-intrusive program that does everything for you? Do you realize how little sense that makes. Also, don't fault bitminter simply because you can't be bothered to read prompts when installing java on your machine

There's one feature there that I don't see in Bitminter- guiminer (and Deepbit's website) gives me a running tally of the bitcoins I've minted. Bitminter doesn't seem to do that.

Yes, BitMinter also does that on the website. Your balance is shown on the "account details" page, the one you get to right after logging in on the website. Your balance is updated immediately when you get paid, which is when a block is created (with prepay on, which is default) or after it is later confirmed (with prepay perk turned off).

Note that Deepbit is 3.5 times our hashrate, so blocks are not created as frequently on BitMinter.

You can have the live stats play a sound every time a block is created so you can hear the coins dropping into your account.

Live stats: http://bitminter.com/livestats/big
Complete block list: http://bitminter.com/blocks

Also I never got an email from the email confirmation robot.

It may have ended up in your spamfolder. Or your mail server may have rejected it outright as spam. I never send spam, but you never know how mailservers will behave. Email has unfortunately become an unreliable medium of communication. We have 5000 users (50%) with confirmed email addresses. Email is optional so I don't know how many of the other 50% tried but failed to register an email address.

Finally having to use one of my existing accounts at another website seems sketchy.

It's not sketchy at all. It's OpenID. It means you have one less password to remember. Also, some of the OpenID providers have cool features. With Google you can get two-factor authentication to make your accounts much safer. And it's free. Try it with Google Authenticator on your cellphone.

That said, I do have old-fashioned name+password authentication on my TODO list, as well as Facebook login. This is low priority, though, as OpenID works very well and there are other more important issues to solve.

Very impressed with Bitminter! After hassling with the "disappearing window" bug in guiminer, and then unsuccessfully messing with various config/bat command line programs, it was a huge relief to have an easy to use gui that installed right away.

OK I'm not as impressed now an hour later as I was when I wrote the above post!  Huh I've managed to get guiminer working again with Deepbit. There's one feature there that I don't see in Bitminter- guiminer (and Deepbit's website) gives me a running tally of the bitcoins I've minted. Bitminter doesn't seem to do that. Also I never got an email from the email confirmation robot. Finally having to use one of my existing accounts at another website seems sketchy. So for now I'm going back to Deepbit...

The website is back up again. Sorry for the downtime this morning.

It was only the website, mining was proceeding as normal. The web server process locked up and did not respond at all. Sad

im having all sorts of weird errors on top of the site being down...

BitFORCE (/dev/cu.usbserial-00001324) ERROR: Extraneous data received: NONCE-FOUND:737AD686
2012.09.08 [22:02]  BitFORCE (/dev/cu.usbserial-00001324) ERROR: ZFX command timed out. Retries: 0

If the BFL unit takes too long to respond you get a timeout message. If later it finally sends a response you get an "extraneous data" message because the miner is no longer expecting any response.

If you get a lot of that it can be because your BFL units are throttling. When they throttle they stop responding for a moment.

I do get some of those errors, but not very often. It was at the same time when i noticed that the site was down, that I was getting these errors, one after another. but since then, its been fine, must of been a weird coincidence..
