21 mill should be the cap. However, lots of BTC have already been lost due to hardware failures, lost passwords, etc. So I would say about 19 mil in total.
Well 20 Million in circulation for sure if Satoshi never moves his and a million lost would probably be a decent estimate, this is most likely right give or take a few hundred thousand.

Although I think OP is kind've confused there are so many divisible elements of bitcoin and that's the number he is looking for or at.

There were many lost during early adoption. So currently there should be ~14 000 000 and in reality there are only ~10 000 000

Notable cases include a guy who trashed 7,000+ bitcoins.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyphillipserb/2013/11/30/from-treasure-to-trash-man-tosses-out-bitcoin-wallet-on-hard-drive-worth-9-million/

There must be a lot of smaller cases like this, which don't get highlighted.

How many Bitcoins really exists? It was just a question
21000000, we all know this, but many coins have been lost, it never can be used again, so the amount is less than 21000000.
This answer is just plain wrong. Please read the replies in the thread.
21 000 000 is the planned supply. This number of Bitcoin won't be in existence before sometime in the year 21xx.

then the today market price is even more of a joke, if we are with 33% less coins in circulation

How many Bitcoins really exists?

Coinmarketcap says that there are 14,154,775 Bitcoins in existence today,
but 1 Bitcoin can be divided into 10,000,000 discrete units, 0.00000001 BTC,
so does that not really mean that there are 141,547,750,000,000 Bitcoins,
or 141 Trillion units of Bitcoins that can be handled independently and sold?

Any thoughts?

The real question to be asked is:
how many BTC exist outside the blockchain?
And I'm talking about the BTC which are in the virtual books of exchanges, services, casinos etc.

I think there are much more around

I do not understand the concept of "a btc outside the blockchain". Hows that even possible? Every bitcoin was generated by mining, which means every bitcoin's origin is in the blockchain.

those are fake bitcoin, a number just put on your exchange account by the owner, instead he is using your real btc to trade or general investments

there are no bitcoin outside of the blockchain, but only blatant fake numbers of them

The short answer is 14,157,400 BTC in circulation right now. Eventually there will be 21,000,000. Estimates predict the final Bitcoin will be mined in the middle of the year 2140.

LOL, why you use this title and not sure the amount of current btc?

2 ways to get the amount,

1.see bloackchain.info, it will show you the current amount
2.see on the wallet, just type some commands you will know it.

At this moment there are 14,155,200 BTC currently mined out of the 21 million that will ever be mined. It was a big day when the currently mined total hit 14 million. There was a debate about how many of those had been lost due to people losing their private keys, but people could only speculate. The longer Bitcoins stay in the same address the more likely it is that the owner has lost his key.

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/lost-bitcoins-109117

I believe it was more a wondering in regards to the long term value of Bitcoin, whether the fact that there are trillions of units (I knew that they were called 'Satoshi') will impact on the value. Sorry I left a zero out and maybe it was a stupid way to put the question, the account is not sold however.

There are 4 standard units of Bitcoin...
1 BTC = 1 Bitcoin
1 mBTC = 10^(-3) Bitcoin
1 µBTC = 10^(-6) Bitcoin
1 Satoshi = 10^(-8) Bitcoin

Units of Satoshi
1 Satoshi = 0.00000001
10 Satoshi = 0.00000010
100 Satoshi = 0.00000100
1,000 Satoshi = 0.00001000
10,000 Satoshi = 0.00010000
100,000 Satoshi = 0.00100000
1,000,000 Satoshi = 0.01000000
10,000,000 Satoshi = 0.10000000
100,000,000 Satoshi = 1.00000000

according to what you mean, if 1 dollar can be indived into 1,000 cent,  that you have 1,000 dollar

so bitcoin(btc) is just a counting unit

you are mistaken bitcoin with satoshi or bits(sometimes they call those in this way)

your number would be correct(besides the 10M which is wrong) if you was talking about satoshi

1 bit = 100 satoshis.

Please don't make OP's head even more confuse with all the math and abbreviations in this topic

Yeah OP
What you stated in your posting is like me saying that since a dollar can be divided into one hundred smaller units (pennies) that if I have a ten dollar bill I actually have $1000. I don't see what you think there is to discuss?
