Wow the zimbabweans are really quadrillionaires, i almost envy them. Maybe not....

The 100 billion and 100 trillion Zimbabwean Dollar notes are selling like hotcakes in online auction sites such as Ebay and Craiglist. A number of Zimbabweans have made good earnings, by selling these notes to banknote collectors around the world. (I myself own a dozen of them, purchased from Ebay for $25).

Hahaha oh boy you made my day, i laughted alot at that one.

Seems like the USD will become a collection note too? I remember some US politician saying that they need to make a 1 trillion dollar worth coin.

I wonder if that will happen?

You seem to be a very level headed person, so I am not going to go down on your opinions with total disregard for your current situation.
It cannot be easy to live under a dictator and a failing economy, with poverty everywhere.

BUT I have to say this..

Those farmers who has build their lives on that land, was chased away like dogs. For many years they have provided food security for many Zimbabweans. {Yes, it was not their LAND and they could have come to some sort of compromise... Let say.. Give 50% land back to the people and continue farming on the other 50% on a lease agreement for say 20 or 50 years, to provide for some sort of income, to exit Zimbabwe on a later stage}

This did not happen... The War veterans went to those farms ... removed the farmers with violent methods, {killing dogs, cattle and burning down houses}

The western world initiated sanctions, because the Zimbabwean people were being tortured and killed, if they opposed the current regime. They also gave opportunity for a democratic vote, but that was rigged to further the interest of Mugabe and his friends.

Sanctions were the only non-violent option to try to resolve the matter.

Then the supposed hero's came to the rescue in the form of the Chinese {As you have mentioned} Do you really think they are there to help or are you setting yourself up to follow the same route?

They will come in, take what they want and when you get sick of them, you will chase them away...like you did with the western countries.

The world is currently being divided and we are moving towards a shit storm... Choose your side, it's not going to be a fun ride.

Why would they apply violent means to resolve an internal dispute? Did that work in the Middle East? please, just look for what is called the "Lancaster House aggreement" that alone may help you take a neutral view to this.

I dislike violence and i dislike the idea that you seem to think we have a choice in who helps us. We are a developing country, not sure if you understand what that means, but if you are from the west let me just say that what you earn in a day is what others earn in a week.

African countries that fought for independence are very very wary of former colonial powers and their allies, as a result if you take a patronizing stance, the first thing you will meet is heavy resistance. The Chinese are business oriented and as such approached us with some of what we needed and got ahead, do you think things would remain sour if R G and Obama had a honest sit down no posturing and truly tried to work things out?

Ask us to pick a side right now and you'll be disappointed, i am happy though that you are willing to engage, because eventually even your leaders will engage and somehow we will reach a compromise.

Thousands of white, productive farmers were robbed and violently kicked out and are now productive in Sambia.

May be they should have reached a compromise on distributing the land. For example, the white farmers should give up 50% of their land to the state, and they get to own the remaining 50%. At that point of time, there were some 6,000 commercial farmers in Zimbabwe. Owning 50% of the farmland means, an average white farmer is left with 1,250 hectares (3,100 acres) of farmland. And the British government should have given compensation to the farmers to the land they give up, as they were the ones who confiscated that land earlier.

So tr and i'm sure many wish it ahd gone down that way. The problems are so many and so entwined that many gave up on the issue.

We had white farmers who had Legally bought land confiscated, we had some who were on colonial land who refused to share. We had violent blacks who looted and assaulted whites and we had some blacks shielding whites. Overall i wish cooler heads had prevailed, i mourn not just our economy but how we are still trying to re-build bridges between the races. I believe that eventually we will get there, especially now with some new white farmers coming back and applying for land, with those displaced (rare for now) finding legal relief for losses.

Please don't confuse me for a sympathizer, i have many a bone to pick with the government and there are things i will never forget nor forgive. There was an avoidable series of events that should never have been allowed to happen, and i see some fat bastards blowing ill begotten wealth. I, like many like minded Zimbabweans across the racial divide would like to see more engagement with the international community and a return to normalized relations, we'd also like to throw a couple of people behind bars.

But the first step is removing the veil of biased media reporting, both here and abroad. We are people and want to engage people, not through tailored speeches , slanted reporting or political posturing , but through honest conversation, an exchange of ideas and sharing perspectives.

where do they go from here? Instead of just getting higher and higher numbers, they must reset to a larger denomination ?

highly unlikely, the people are tired and are happy with the current system of multi-currency. Attempts to change that will result in heavy resistance.

175 Quadrillion Zimbabwean Dollars Now Equals $5

Quote
HARARE, Zimbabwe — Zimbabweans will start exchanging quadrillions of local dollars for a few U.S. dollars next week, as President Robert Mugabe's government discards its virtually worthless national currency.

This is not good for a country, hope they rebound back to normal, best wishes to Zimbawe on their road to recovery. Other countries should take lesson and adopt something which is not centralized as Bitcoin if they have to save themselves from situations which could happen to anyone and at anytime.

They also gave opportunity for a democratic vote, but that was rigged to further the interest of Mugabe and his friends.

I have to disagree with your observations here. According to most of the neutral international observers, the presidential / parliamentary elections in Zimbabwe were free and fair. It is clear that Robert Mugabe enjoys around 60-70% of the support. The Western nations imposed sanctions, as the election results were against their interests.

OK summary: RM was democratically elected, then turned into a dictator.

Thousands of white, productive farmers were robbed and violently kicked out and are now productive in Sambia.

The land was handed over to corrupt cronies of the RM government, and the country and its industry is now 100% in black hands. Sort of like Greece but with Africans.

Result: highest inflation since the big bang.

I think this speaks for itself and this time, white people cannot be blamed, because they were not involved.  Grin

many people would love it if  it was actually like that.

1) it's called Zambia not Sambia

2) land was allocated to all Zimbabweans who wanted it, even now one can apply for it. other parts like racial bias and cronyism for choice pieces of land are debatable

3) Greece? ever heard of Malaysia's bumiputra laws? Indigenisation is very common in the world and is especially required in countries that were previously under colonial rule.

4) The mad horse inflation was quite the experience , made many cynics and was both tragic and funny.

5) lol, naive. This is a fight over land rights between white minority and black majority, which western nations decided to dive arse first into , "white man" as you seem to refer to them are very involved.

To some of us, if a person is Zimbabwean that is all that counts, your skin color is not a factor. While there are elements that do seem to think it matters, they are on the fringes of society and generally aren't liked.

Politics is not something that can easily be summarized, especially because of the varying perspectives and narratives. Many people have various interests to protect and as a result the actual situation and the truth never really surface. Take for example the political violence that flares up every once in a while, the western media will exaggerate and point to a culprit, the local government controlled media will play it down and point to a culprit, the local independent/opposition media will report and point to a culprit. Yet when i witnessed it i saw members of both the most prominent parties hurling rocks at each other.

Another factor i forgot to mention, not sure if it's relevant. People generally now don't give a hoot about leadership and politics anymore, we are all too busy trying to feed and clothe ourselves to take it all seriously. We just had by-elections, Zanu will tell you they won, Mdc will say they told voters to boycott, but the reality is that we are tired of the constant bickering and since it won't put food on the table tonight, we chose to do something productive with our time.

We had a joint government for a while, abject failure, we were replacing one set of fools with another set of fools, who were just under a different banner. Much like America is going through, no matter who they vote for, they just won't get much out of it in a two party state.

if you ever wanted proof that central government is a bad idea, we would give you barrels full of it. eg, i have been a millionaire, billionaire , trillionaire and quadrillionaire. "inflation babies" ie people who were at school during this time can count into the quintillions, dozens of zeros don't intimidate them.

It would be nice though if we could come together and experiment with a local crypto currency as a side channel payment system. maybe limit it to transactions up to a certain amount. The problem would be...who controls it,who controls the code, the nodes? Like any other government in the would, they would want to exert control, even politicians with no idea what it is would be seen posturing and trying to be important.

And just like the larger countries we have local companies that may work and lobby against this to protect their interests.
