Was this just a prototype demo or is it physically somewhere my friend in SD can go and use today?

This deserves its own thread.

Good question.

If the Chinese government really wanted to destroy the USD, all they'd need to do is put one of these in every local Starbucks throughout China.

Talk about a great startup model...are you listening Mr. Rose?

Actually I predict that if Bart Chilton tries to lay his grubby little hands on bitcoin here in the USA, we'll see this happen.

Interesting, so you're saying china would be the one who wants to invest in these?

Can you walk me through how that destroy's the USD?

Lastly, who's Bart Chilton?

the Chinese gov't has for years been encouraging their citizens to buy gold.  i think it's b/c fundamentally they understand that fiat is being debased, including their own yuan that's pegged to Bernanke Bucks.

i think they want their ppl to maintain their purchasing power for social crowd control.  perhaps they will look at Bitcoin similarly.  not to mention the fact that they would like to see the USD be removed as the world's reserve currency and replaced with the yuan.  that's not going to happen so maybe if Bitcoin could do it, then China can continue to leverage its cheap labor as a world force.

I was hoping for a thread to discuss why it is illegal to have a bi-directional money machine & what hurdles we need to get over before I can start running one of these ATMs at my local pub.

I appreciate kiba's efforts to have standards maintained - but there's no need to get too abrasive about it.

Need date in title.

I pmed this dude, and he won't even correct it! What a douche!

2013-5-2 should be 2013-05-02

Sent another PM to the OP for getting the date formatting wrong.

Finally, the god damn date is fixed. What douchebag SilverVigilante is for taking so long.

Are you okay, kiba?  Do you need a hug or something? Kiss Maybe you can ask about becoming a moderator so you can better police the formatting of the dates and eliminate what appears to be a major source of stress for you.

Too much stress is really bad for your health!  Wink (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_stress)

Admitting you have a problem is the first step to solving it.  Wink

Well worth the painful download to watch, very nice demo and he answered all the questions competently and conservatively without hype or sugarcoating.  I'm now optimistically less skeptical about this project, assuming they can clear the significant regulatory hurdles within their 6-month rollout estimate.  Particularly interesting was their intention to create a Gox competitor.  Best of luck to these guys in their endeavour.

Finally was able to watch all of it.  Very nice job there with the questions and barring any regulations, I hope we can see them soon(ish).

Am I spoiled?  Someone with an HD camera should have taped it and it would have been better if he had a direct mic too but hey, it was an interesting presentation for sure.  I hope the San Diego news does a good job with their piece.  Of course, there happens to be some wild fires in the area so the piece might get overlooked if that is the case.

Honestly better than I was expecting.

He hinted at big name partnerships, timeframe for possible release was sooner than I anticipated, the machine looks great and I think he handled himself rather well.

Good shit

Looks like it was only a plan to sell high and rebuy much lower

It's not clear from the post whether the demo is still proceeding, by the other people involved...anyone know?

Anyway it looked like a publicity stunt (to raise newsletter profile & get new subscribers?) from the get-go, it's pretty obvious that the legal frameworks and logistics make this kind of device impossible for the same reasons that there are no EUR/USD unattended bidirectional cash exchange machines anywhere either.

I am interested in seeing their solution for actually withdrawing money from a bitcoin address.  I would also like to see and actual product in action instead of an ATM with a bitcoin logo Photoshopped on top of it.

I guess it will be done like this:

1. User enters the desired amount of fiat.

2. ATM returns a BTC address with the required BTC amount

3. User transfers BTC to the address within a few minutes

4. Either the ATM or the user provides a passcode

5. User returns after 1 hour, enters the passcode, collects physical cash

User may also do steps 1 to 3 at home and collect physical cash later at the ATM

Or the machine can give you the option for an instant transaction by using easywallet or another off-blockchain solution

Yes, or green address

On March 25, 2013, Canadian media and technology entrepreneur, Jeff Berwick, announced the completion of the world’s first BitcoinATM machine and announced it would soon take it to market.

Today, just over one month later, BitcoinATM is announcing its grand inauguration and launch press conference and reception.  BitcoinATM will be unveiling its G6000 BitcoinATM at the Hotel Del Coronado in the Yorke Room in San Diego, CA on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at 1pm.
The machine will be displayed and presented as fully functional for both cash in and cash out capabilities with a real time presentation showing the funds flowing into or out of bitcoin wallets.

The company garnered much media attention over the past month with its plans to bring Bitcoin to mainstreet with its ATM, which, unlike traditional ATM’s, features cash-in and cash-out capabilities for users looking to either buy bitcoins or sell bitcoins.
Cementing itself among the forefront of Bitcoin startups, BitcoinATM maintains its plan to place an ATM in Cyprus, as well as throughout the Americas and the world.

Since announcing its technology, the company has received franchisee inquiries from 300  groups in over 30 countries spanning every continent on the globe except Antarctica.  BitcoinATM is also in the process of closing a first round of fundraising expected to be in the $1-3 million range to handle growth and demand.

There is a limited number of space available for the afternoon gathering and a large amount of interest, so BitcoinATM asks all media and interested parties to send the company an e-mail to RSVP to [email protected].
For more information on BitcoinATM you can go to www.bitcointatm.com.

EDIT

I see it on the main website now!   This is going to be BIG news I think!
