This particular news story has been widely publicized... Just searched in Google and found more than 5,000 articles talking about it. Can't ask for anything better, at these testing times.  Grin

ITA! At the same time it's good PR for Bitcoin.

FUUU Ok I am officially jealous of every single MIT student I may have more but in a few years they will be the richest alumni

lol... after 5 years, when Bitcoin crosses the $100,000 mark, these same MIT students (ex-students by then) will be jealous of you, and you can show off your wealth to them.  Grin

Ha-ha I guess that's also true but mumble my uni wasn't innovative and gave its students 100 dollars in 2014 dollars in BTC while they were ^_^

the point of having an economy is to exchange for things you see value in. There in no need for mandatory security class and if it is all spent on beer that just shows they value beer

It would be nice if they submitted a challenge to grow the coin into something substantial... with some type of incentive.

I think this is great news and publicity for Bitcoin. As mentioned, these are students attending one of the most prestigious universities for technology in the U.S. Some might be dumped, sure. But for the most part I would say the majority of these kids are not hurting for money, and they will see far greater potential for their small BTC holdings than just a hundred quick bucks. All of them will probably learn the protocol of it, and I could Definitely see some new programs, websites, apps, and companies being started from this event. I would be interested to see how many of them are already BTC users/holders.

I hope that the students who would be interested in using Bitcoins will develop a program to provide additional security against hackers  Cheesy

I don't doubt there will be at least some that will take it seriously, but I also don't doubt there will be some who won't or wont really care that much.

See... right now we have some 100,000 active Bitcoin users (out of some 1,000,000 people who possess at least 0.1 mBTC). There are around 4,500 UG students in MIT. Even if we can convince 20% of them, that means 900 people are added to our ranks. The number of active Bitcoiners jump by 1%. Repeat this process in various other Universities and Colleges, and in no time we will be having millions of users.  Grin

I like the idea, but I'm not sure if it'll work out, I can't help but think half of these kids just won't really care and end up losing the coins or just forgetting about them. If this ends up actually happening it'll be an interesting experiment.

At least some of them will take it seriously. And most of these kids at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are extremely intelligent. They will realize the future potential of Bitcoin.

You have to remember that some people can be academically very intelligent, but not really very smart and make very stupid decisions, but I don't doubt there's a lot of both smart and intelligent people at MIT, but I'm also sure there's a few slack ones too  Grin.

That said if I go visit MIT it will make me happy to know that I can use bitcoin in their ecosystem exactly what I expect of a leading institution
Also really awesome MIT has a M.I.T.'s Bitcoin Club to check out

Yeah, that won't last the first weekend if the local bars accept bitcoins.

I have already posted about this. Even if 90% of the 4,500 students sell off their coins immediately, the remaining 10% will keep them (450). And 450 is a very large number, as far as Bitcoin is concerned.

I like the idea of creating an ecosystem on MIT's campus.  The smartest students of the country are studying how to use btc and may be they could solve some of the system's problems.
IMO, they will be able to prove to the world that the cryptocurrency is our future.  Smiley
