My personal bet is on @Ratimov, although I’d also take into account some from those on the above list. The lists displays forum members create from the 01/01/2019 onwards, active since the 01/10/2019 onwards, not banned, having earned at least 50 merits. That renders 56 candidates, out of which the top 20 should probably be the fittest ( maybe with a couple of exceptions). Besides content, I’d also consider elements such as number merits awarded and received, and the number of associated TXs.

Note 1: There could be other candidates I have not listed, such as accounts active during the beginning of 2019, but not since the 01/10/209, or accounts that were created before 01/01/2019 but were Newbies at the time.

Note 2: The data related to merits is as of this morning. The remaining data is as of last Friday (I'm downloading it now).

Edit: Here's an idea: Do the same per main board/local board (be it restricted to Newbie or else) ... quite ambicious to do. I figure it's best to see how this proposal (OP's) plays out first.

It’s pretty difficult to tell. I’ve gone briefly over a list of accounts created from the 01/01/2019 onwards, that have received at least 20 sMerits (https://public.tableau.com/shared/G2XFMK2PP?:display_count=y&:origin=viz_share_link), and numerically, @Ratimov seems the best candidate, even more so having been created during mid-June 2019. Content wise is difficult to say due to the language barrier, but the structure and detail of the posts seems rather good. There are a few other forum members that have excellent numbers, who also have a large local board tradition (making it pretty impossible to compare content).

If you have some potential candidates that you're unable to gauge thoroughly due to language, you can post it them as "possibilities."  Maybe other members who frequent the same local boards will help with the assessment.

Any objections to me moving it to Meta?

I don't mind, not that it matters much.

Unfortunately I still can't come up with any suitable nominations. All notable newbies that I recall are sockpuppets. This probably says more about me than the actual state of the forum - I'm sure there are great genuine noobs hiding somewhere.

There has to be -- we just don't go to those places. Things that excite us are boring to noobs. We have no idea what the noobs find exciting. Part of the aging process.

The benefit of moving it to Meta is that it will be seen by a fresh set of eyes who (wisely, most likely) steer clear of the Reputation section.

Lol, no similarities were insinuated.  I agree that many are probably unaware of their nominations.  Which isn't a bad thing per se.

I'll nominate SockyMcSockFace for gaining 10+ merit within a month as a newbie, such as raising the issue of BSV false flags. Kudos.
17 posts receiving 11 merit is a great start for any newbie on this forum, worth acknowledging in my opinion.

nominated retracted

Thanks for participating, but I agree with V8s, that's obviously a sock-puppet, and not even trying to hide the fact.

Leave it open for another week or so. Maybe some other nominations will come along. I kept nominations for my Troll Poll open for a month. Also, you may have gotten some more traffic by putting this thread in Meta.

Since I made the suggestion as it parallels the NFL's post season I've decided to keep nominations open until Super Bowl Sunday.  Meta board might have been a better place for this post as opposed to reputation.

Anyone else thinks how stupid the "BTC is not Bitcoin" argument is? It's like saying $AMZN is not Amazon anymore because Amazon has moved from selling solely books to now selling a dozen million of products.

What are you going to do next then? Shill an utter shit altcoin?

oh wait..

Well after all that I hardly dare even nominate this fella. He seems almost too good to be true.

In further curmudgeonly objections, the similarity between American Football rookies and Bitcointalk newbies isn't that great, not that Direwolf said it really was. The young sportsmen will already have been playing for what a dozen years, will have been vigorously weeded out, and will have been trained up in a sub-culture and a culture steeped in the sport; whereas a btc newbie nowadays will probably have almost no experience, knowledge or skill. The first ever time he caught a football, or watched and took in a skillful play. So it's pretty good that we scrabbled together even a handful of handy noobs here and I wish them the best of luck. (I wonder if they are all even aware of their nominations?)

Suspicion is all that is required here. 'Sock' is a shortening of 'sock-puppet' which is a near synonym for 'alt' account. So it's there in his name. The suspicion.

When you put it like that, it does sound like they are admitting to be an alt account Tongue

I'll admit I'm a bit disappointed.  Not with the quality of accounts that have been nominated, some great ones obviously.  But I'm disappointed with the quantity of nominees (or lack there of.)

I'll nominate SockyMcSockFace for gaining 10+ merit within a month as a newbie, such as raising the issue of BSV false flags. Kudos.
17 posts receiving 11 merit is a great start for any newbie on this forum, worth acknowledging in my opinion.

And you don't for one minute suspect that SockyMcSockFace violates rule 2?

2. Don't nominate your own alts, or an account you suspect is an alt of another established member.

No, I have no reason to suspect that this is an alt account, although like with any newbie it's entirely possible. But I also haven't read all the posts/replies to/from/about this user either.
If you'd like to show me any evidence, or reason why you're suspicious, then I will happily retract my nomination if it seems that this is the case.
Do enlighten me, with references please.

Also, you may have gotten some more traffic by putting this thread in Meta.

Suits better in B&H as more newbies could nominate themselves or there "ranking up colleagues". Even nominating ourselves is allowed, hence can garb more traffic in sections where newbies roam around more often.

The only name I recognise in post #1 is Ratimov who has started a Russian Language version of the Known Alts thread. (and Loycemobile who doesn't count - no offence LoyceV Wink )
I haven't interacted with him practically at all, so am hesitant to nominate him without support/seconder.
Indeed Ratimov registered this year. I am giving him my nomination. He's a real go-getter, and while I don't speak Russian, I value the contributions he's made in English (scam busting, identifying alts, etc).

Thank you for your support. I have learned a lot for myself over the past 7 months on the forum. And I have done a lot of useful things for the forum as a thank you.  Smiley

Impressive merit record buddy! Awesome really!

OPs idea has already proven to be great, we get to know members we werent aware of, for example because they are around in completely different sections of the forum, local boards etc.

I'm sure many of us have seen Rikafip helping out with hunting down alts and scammers.

Yes, he's also a good contender. Sometimes I wonder if newbies with special proclivities and know-how are alts, and then am reluctant to support their endeavors, but Rikafip seems like a genuine newcomer. He's asked me for my advice a time or two, which I don't think an alt would do.

Leave this bickering in another thread. You guys need to stop carrying it to every single thread.

I don't remember asking for your opinion on the matter.

Edit: if you don't think its worth talking about that Quickseller is using an alt to nominate himself for "newbie of the year," there's something wrong with you.

I came across this member a while back when I was directed to a conversation in the Russian section.  He seems like a decent person, and certainly helpful to that local board.

The Russian branch is now in crisis.

I simply inquired if nominating yourself was allowed.  After you answered, i was going to nominate myself, but decided against it after some consideration.

I considered nominating myself to be a little too tacky for my taste.

Only a little? Why would you have even brought it up??

Jeez Louise. You should just be happy to be in a Hhampuz campaign man.

who on earth nominated quickseller's alt? the primenumber7 guy

PrimeNumber7 nominated himself.   Undecided

Three questions:
Are we allowed to nominate ourselves?

When selecting a "meritable" post the person made, what is the maximum rank they can have been at the time? If they ranked up during the year, can their post be from after they ranked up to a full, or senior member?

Is someone disqualified if they gained knowledge and experience with bitcoin prior to registering on the forum? Some people like to lurk on internet forums without signing up. For example, I have read stack overflow threads nearly every day for a very long time, but have never had the need to actually sign up.

I guess it's technically not in violation of the rules, although a good lawyer could argue it's a violation if the member knows it's an alt account of another established member.

2. Don't nominate your own alts, or an account you suspect is an alt of another established member.

None the less, it's kind of tacky and obviously not in the spirit of the thread.

oh wait he doesn't qualify? maybe he should, idk?

I agree he should.  I can remove the rank-up stipulation.  This is a celebration of new members that are good for the forum so I think this one should be included.

First nomination, thanks V8s.

It's football season in America.  Real football; men's football; gridiron, pigskins, goalposts, and hard-hitting, corn-fed Americans.  One of the big things the NFL does this time of year is celebrate the accomplishments of the year's new players, who are affectionately refereed to as rookies.

Not specified, and not important in my opinion.  The posts can be from anytime during 2019.

No doubt there is quite many good new members joined Bitcointalk in 2019. But I don't always pay attention to user rank or nickname. So, unfortunately not many of them had stuck in my memory. From users mentioned above, I'm only familiar with @efialtis, he is great guy. And I must agree with him - no offence, @DireWolfM14, but there is only one real football, and it's definitely not handegg  Tongue

So, I think I should nominate someone also. I pick The-Devil (https://bitcointalksearch.org/user/the-devil-2726750)
He joined forum just in December, but he already proven himself as good member. Here is one of his great posts:

here is his thread.

There is quite many good newbie members, but it's not that easy to differentiate them as not alts of other users. I was about to suggest this user before i checked the review in his profile.
However, i did really appreciate your initiative DireWolf .

I would suggest this newbie from my local board:
User "icy3" https://bitcointalksearch.org/user/icy3-2309382 registered account since 2018 but still a newbie with only 10 posts. He is a great thinker and a good writer. Any arabic reader can admit how icy3 is a clever guy. 9 out of 10 from his posts received merits as we are already few active members in the arabic board .
He is not often online but he keeps visiting the forum and i guess he read topics in many boards.
He self admitted that he is from Syria, i wish he is doing fine and that he won't stop contributing to the arabic board.

Nominee:  geophphreigh
Rank | Join Date:  Full member  |  July 23, 2019

Reasoning:
The Collectibles community is fairly tight knit and it takes a LOT for a new member to surpass their newbie status and start to build the repertoire that a regular Collectibles poster needs in order to gain trust with trades and sales. A lot of newbies to our board come in guns a blazin and think they are going to decide whats best for their sales/ego and it has pushed more newcomers away than those that have stuck around.

Enter geophphreigh.

Humble, quiet, new to the physical bitcoin collectibles game, geophphreigh begins by entering a raffle, putting in a bid on an auction, and straight out purchasing his first few items from trusted members in Collectibles. Seeing that this newcomer does not have much activity he is asked to place deposits, use escrows, and message the auction hosts before bidding in auctions. All of these done without hesitation, geophphreigh quickly starts to gain trust amongst the many Collectibles sellers.
Friendly rivalries start in many raffles/auctions and geophphreigh quickly became a common name in many of these.. still to this day. Sometime's not so friendly geophphreigh is also not afraid to call out the bullshit moves made by certain coin creator's and sloppy auction hosts.

The Utah Goldback was issued and had us collector's hot with excitement. Not only did geophphreigh start a group buy for other members (it involved wire transfers and KYC/phonecalls and a lot of bullshit many people did not want to do) but he also created the board's own [INFO] The Utah Goldback Reference Thread. A well planned and thought out information thread regarding the history of these collector's notes along with the wealth of information and pictures provided.

Yogg(Coldkey) hosts a design contest for the Ten Years Of Bitcointalk Commemorative Coldkey and geophphreigh submits one of the winning designs and a personal favorite of many. Click here to see geophphreigh's design and here to see the actual Coldkey card.

Theymos hosts the Ten Year Bitcointalk Anniversary Art Contest and geophphreigh creates one of the most stunning pieces of art. Click here to see geophphreigh's piece

This member has wowed many of us in the ~6 months they have been part of the community. Can't wait to see what they bring to the table this year and also hope we see some more new guys to our little ol Collectibles board with the skills and attitude displayed by geophphreigh.

For an example transaction:
https://www.blockchain.com/btc/tx/71df79fe8f379134adf95d44bcf451391726bd5d211a26b7fa90be83585adb4c

Firstly, to confirm, is 'input' the sender/spender and 'output' the receiver of the bitcoins?

Is the link above ONE transaction, i.e. when a person pays x BTCs from his wallet to another wallet? If so, why are there multiple ins and outs?

Is the 'hash' (also in the URL) basically the 'transaction reference (or number)' so to speak?

Is the fee (0.00105 BTC in the example) always paid by and deducted from the sender?

Thanks in advance..

I knew a few newbies who made lot of contribution but I don't think they will be newbies anymore once they are doing some contribution so I suggest you to increase the criteria required up to member rank to pick the right one to be selected as a new member of the year 2019.

Their current rank isn't important as long as they were newbies some time during 2019.  They could be Jr. Members or higher at this point; again that's not important.

It got me thinking about our forum, and how we receive rookies newbies.  I know most newbies here can be annoying and troublesome, but certainly not all of them.  So I want to have a competition to select, acknowledge, and celebrate the newbies that are here to participate in and contribute to our community.

Of course, I'll need the help of more established members to select the nominees.  One of the reasons I want to do this is get to know some of the newbies with whom I have not interacted.

This thread will be for nominations, I'll accept nominations for one week until Super Bowl Sunday.  I'll lock this thread exactly 168 hours after posting it, then I'll open a new thread with a poll listing all the nominees.  The polling thread will be used to vote for the nominees and, and the nominee with the most votes will be selected as 2019's Newbie of the Year.  The voting thread will also be open for voting for one week.

What does the newbie win?  Nothing at the moment, but we can discuss that.  Just the recognition might be helpful, and possibly lead to earning some merits for some of the better posts made.  I don't know if monetizing the competition is such a good idea, but again we can debate that.  I don't want to volunteer Theymos for any more work than he already has, but maybe this is worthy of a "Newbie of the Year" badge.

Here are the rules:

1. You must be a Full Member or higher to suggest a nominee.
2. Don't nominate your own alts, or an account you suspect is an alt of another established member.
3. Nominate as many accounts as you want.
4. Post the username and user ID of the nominee.
5. Include a quote of one of the nominee's "meritable" posts and a short explanation why he deserves the nomination.
6. The nominee must have been a newbie on or after Jan 01, 2019, and promoted to Jr. Member by Dec 31, 2019.
7. Have fun.

We can also discuss the rules, and make changes as the week goes on.
