Feels bad for Cristiano Ronaldo. Qatar 2022 was supposed to be his final world cup appearance. Portugal may still qualify, as they are on top in the playoff table. They have 17 points, followed by Russia at 16 (Switzerland or Italy may still end up with more points after today's match). Within two days, the first phase of the UEFA qualifiers will be over and we will get the list of 10 teams who qualify as the group winners. For teams like Portugal, we need to wait for a few more months, until the playoffs are complete.
A direct qualification for the 2022 World Cup has not been achieved by Portugal. Play-offs will now be necessary. Seeing Cristiano Ronaldo in this state is really saddening. This is a complete injustice to a team like Portugal. They should not be in any play-offs. Considering Portugal has a world-winning squad, they should not have to enter a play-off. But they still have a chance to make it and Portugal should take it seriously.

Serbia did it, as their performance against Portugal was spectacular. Yesterday's game didn't offer much in terms of action. I just watched Serbia show the world that they are no underdogs.

Although it is kinda like off-topic, its somehow funny.
I watched the video. You can think that the goalkeeper is a man, at least from the stature and movement. But this is also difficult to determine, because biologically you can be both. I can only think of the case of the South African female sprinter Caster Semenya a few years ago, where it is still not really clear, despite several investigations, whether she is actually a man.
I think such cases will be much more common in women's sports in the future and that the respective worldwide federations will have to create clear rules to preserve fairness.

Funny news. I don’t want to discuss gender issues (since this is offtopic and for many people is a hot topic), I’m just wondering how is this even possible - uncertainty? I remember that 20-30 years ago there were scandals with the fact that many adult football players played in the youth teams of Nigeria, but now they cannot appear out of nowhere and information about age and gender can be traced until birth.

Yeah, sorry, it is perhaps slightly off topic, but these games are actually FIFA-governed games for AFC (which Jordan and Iran are members of), which actually determine qualification into FIFA World Cup, albeit for the women's version of the tournament, for which there is, unfortunately, no correct sub-thread for me to add this comment into (or is there and I can't find it?).

The keeper has played for her whole life as a woman, of course, as I'm finding out now. Just funny that a team only challenges the decision AFTER they lose a game. Go Iran!

As a side comment, I have followed women's football recently and they have vastly, vastly improved over the past 5/10 years. Technically speaking, they're quite high quality in some countries, which wasn't the case 10 years ago, based on my admittedly limited observation.

Just came across this fun piece of news in Asian Federation Cup women's competition (I actually follow men's AFC but this was worth reading). Jordan's national team lost to Iran and they're adamant the goalkeeper's actually a man. Their prince has demanded FIFA look into it.

I'm not going to judge until I watch the reel itself -- you can always tell when the goalie's a man =p No offence even if some people would take it; I'm sure it'll change over the years but right now, women's goalkeeping hasn't arrived at the acrobatic levels of men's!

I think Portugal can only have themselves to blame as they fumbled their chance over the last two games.
In Portugal's group, where we have Azerbaijan, Luxembourg, Ireland & Serbia, i would have easily tipped Portugal for qualification, unfortunately football really has a lot of twist. No one ever expected or saw that last minute goal coming.

Feels bad for Cristiano Ronaldo. Qatar 2022 was supposed to be his final world cup appearance.
Must be a really difficult time for CR7 at the moment, things at both club and country are going unexpected ways for him, we all know how committed he is to National duties and  how he has been dragging the team and making sure to be the difference between Portugal and any other team, unfortunately Serbia really played them down, and his singular performance was not enough this time.

almost everyone was surprised to see last night's match where Serbia managed to beat Portugal at home even though Portugal took the lead through Renato Sanchez's goal before Serbia turned things around in injury time, so that Portugal had to go through the play-offs to qualify for the world cup finals.Qatar, where last night's match made Ronaldo and his friends invested by the Serbian defense where they relied on team cohesiveness to beat Portugal, we deserve to give a thumbs up to the Serbia squad where they played so well that they successfully walked into the 2022 world cup in Qatar. Qatar, food for Portugal itself, I think they will also qualify even though they have to go through the play-off route in the decisive match later

Serbia indeed deserved to win, although some people were surprised by Portugal's defeat. Serbia played more solidly with a fairly good passing
accuracy, then Serbia also had better ball possession than Portugal. From there, I can judge Serbia more highly in their efforts to win the game,
and their hard work paid off by winning. Several times Serbian defenders managed to break attacks from Portuguese players, I appreciate how strong
the Serbian defense is. Even though Serbia had to score the winning goal in the last minute, but I don't think it was luck, but the result of Serbia's
more solid teamwork. Congratulations to the Serbian national team for qualifying for the 2022 world cup in Qatar.

Portugal should have lost the game in Ireland as well, and even then it was obvious that Portugal had serious problems.
I would say that Portugal has the same problem as Manchester United and as Juve had and that problem is called Ronaldo.
In modern football, all players must have equal responsibilities and play both defense and attack.
If you have a player who doesn’t play defense then you play with a player less all the time and that’s a serious handicap.
Ronaldo has become bigger than his team and that is the main problem of Portugal.

Serbia took a risk with Mitrović at half time and I'm really glad he managed to score the winner. If you remember, he was the one that missed the last penalty shot in the shutout for the Euro qualifiers against Scotland that Serbia lost.

Before last night, Portugal lost only 1 home game in WC qualifiers the last 28 years, a 3-2 loss against Denmark in 2008 - in that game they conceded the losing goal in overtime as well Grin

Serbia played great. The quick football that both teams showed amazed me. I haven't enjoyed watching a football match for a long time. Portugal has one problem. And that's Ronaldo's problem. I think it's time for him to finish playing for the national team. He can no longer help her. He won the title with her, and Portugal is not capable of more. At the moment, Ronaldo cannot give his team anything.
Portugal played pressing since the match started and even they managed to score a quick goal in the 2nd minute, but indeed Serbia who played quite well despite being 1 goal down did not make the Serbian national team afraid, and even their tended to dominate the game and could threaten Portugal several times in the match that, and in the end they were able to come back with a 1-2 win for Serbia, in my opinion, we can't blame Ronaldo for the defeat, even though Ronaldo has tried to help Portugal to win, but indeed Serbia played better in that match so they deserve to win.

Some dramatic matches happened yesterday as it is often the case on the last matchday of a group stage. Portugal was very unlucky yesterday and it will probably take some time to recover from that last minute shock against serbia. That being said i think serbia deserved to score that goal as they were the better Team, especially in the first half. As others already said, i also think that Portugal will still qualify for the World cup but of course it wont be easy.

I would not say that Portugal was unlucky, they were not play football, they were just trying to reach draw without much effort, and that was not not happen for them in the end

Serbia was lucky to score a late goal, but we were playing it all along, and it goal came as reward to all efforts

nevertheless, I think that Portugal will reach Qatar through qualifications, there are probably the best team on position 2

I'm so glad that this happened, Portugal decided not to play football and simply boringly grind for the result. They were punished for it, but they will still be huge favorites in the qualifiers and we'll probably see them in Qatar.
Only if they are able to win the play-off game, but I will be very curious who the opponent will be. Portugal will hang their fate in the play-off while we could see there was a lot of disappointment among their players yesterday especially Ronaldo. They failed as they were unable to hold on to a draw and this time Ronaldo really didn't bring his country the luck he used to do to save his team from defeat.

Congratulations to Serbia, a truly great performance yesterday. Portugal was terrible, their only shot on the whole game was that goal in the 2nd minute.

Rui Patricio was unlucky with that 1st goal from Tadić and Mitrović scored the winning goal in the near post so he'll take some of the blame for sure, but pointing fingers at him after their performance yesterday would be really wrong.

Unfortunately the goal at the last minute made Ronaldo's hope of getting a ticket to directly qualify for the Qatar world cup event, so it stopped, now the only way for Ronaldo to get a world cup ticket, Portugal must qualify for the play-offs. , automatically they have to win the match, can't lose, lose once, have little chance of qualifying for the world cup, hopefully ronaldo and his friends can get champions league tickets..

Portugal have second chance on play off zone but depend which one country against but looking with the table many great country like Turkey, Wales, Poland and Russia become candidate one of against for Portugal on play off zone. Just see when drawing time coming will get lower against country or Portugal will left dreaming pass to world cup 2022 in Qatar, last night they only need one points only but last minutes have loss 1-2 from Serbia.
It is true that Portugal still have a chance and it will depend a lot on the opponent they will face in the play-off. Yesterday's match was very tight where both countries needed point to qualify automatically for the world cup round with other countries. Only 2 play-off match can bring Portugal to the world cup, that's the remaining hope that Portugal currently has. Serbia were really good in the group, they deserved to go through that way.

Spain achieved difficult, but deserved win, though, even draw wouldn;t be something bad for them. What a shot from Olmo and then Morata couldn't miss that that easy shot. Spain in Qatar already.
Portugal 1:2 Serbia. It's difficult to comment this game because I watched Spin vs Swededn. Portugal scored very ealry goal, but it didn't helped them. Serbia surprisingly won after late goal and they go to Qatar directly, Portugal will have to play in playoffs anb it will be difficult - only 3 teams will reach World Cup from it.
Spain vs Sweden game was very competitive and entertaining, Olmo powerful shot was too hot for Olsen to handle,  thus the swedish goalkeeper tried to parried off the ball over the bar unfortunately hit the bar and rebounced to Morata who scored with cool finish the introduction of Zlatan Ibrahimovic couldn't rescue sweden from losing the match, however the swedish stand a chance of qualifying for a place if they win their remaining matches, meanwhile a big for Portugal chances of world qualification after losing to Serbia at home.
