0.8 RC1 will solve your problem.
My 2.2GHz dual-core laptop with 4GB of RAM downloaded the blockchain from scratch in less than 5 hours yesterday.
I've run it with dbcache=1500

If you want to walk on water, get out of the boat
i tried for hours and hours and it just seems to take forever to get up to speed, thank god you don't have to do this every time
Or use multibit.

Use an SSD. It speeds things up tremendously. I switch between a SSD and  a HDD  on my laptop (work/private), and on my desktop I multiboot various OS's on SSDs and HDDs. Regardless of the machine or the OS, on the SSDs it syncs a week in a few minutes or so. on the HDDs, it just keeps going forever and ever and ever. Ive given up on it, the full client is unusable on a harddrive unless you keep the machine on 24/7. If you dont have an SSD, might be worth just trying a USB stick.

I do think this is something devs should tackle though. They have to be doing something wrong or using a crappy DB. Synching the Bitcoin client uses far too much disk IO. Surely some or most of that can be done in RAM, no?

Ditch the original client, its shitty. I had the same problem, then I downloaded Multibit and it was many times faster, 100% complete in about a day or day and a half. Electrum is pretty good to, no need to wait for any download

blockchain.info i say. it's easiest just use two factor authentication.

For only a few coins for daily use, it's probably the easiest and fastest way to start with bitcoin. Blockchain.info's MyWallet is a very good service indeed.

I would recommend:

- blockchain.info as a starting point, to have a daily expenses wallet
- paper wallet/armory for a savings account

This said, please use another client, like Multibit or Electrum. Or use blockchain.info
Or if you are in a real hurry, and you don't mind some serious risk, try the Instawallet.
Personally I use the Multibit client.

You could just download most of the darn thing as file:

Probably only slightly more dangerous than downloading blocks from some random client.

36 hours and my wallet is not syncronized yet. i still have 8% for more than 10 hours i dont know what to do. why is taking so long?

8% to go or 8%???  If you stall out at anything less than block 180,000 or so it's a network/bandwidth issue, past 180k (or whenever satoshi dice started) it could be a variety of issues

and the best way to DL it is to connect to a single peer, using maxconnections=1, listen=0, and connect=

one of the fast nodes ofc, not someone on a DSL or something.  when it requests from someone w/ crap upstream, you end up waiting some godawful period of time before it moves on

Try using an online wallet
like http://www.blockchain.info/wallet

it's safe and managed by a trusted

No need for downloading
the blockchain.
It's a blockchain explorer for God's sake

Alternatively you can download the Electrum client. You keep your own wallet and doesn't download the blockchain so it is instant.

It takes days because it has to download the whole blockchain (over 5GB) and because the database system it use is horribly slow. Next version will be much better. It will still have a fail interface and will take minutes to launch etcetc.

This said, please use another client, like Multibit or Electrum. Or use blockchain.info

What is the most secure and in the same time most easy to get bitcoin wallet?

The next major release - 0.8 - will help a lot with these problems - and if you use an SSD (rather than a traditional hard-drive) that will also make a big difference (assuming you are wanting to use the Satoshi client rather than a "lighter" one).

Hey thanks for the reply. I just made an account on https://blockchain.info. is this secure enough to have bitcoins there?I`m so excited about this bitcoin thing that i didnt slept for 48 hours. i`ll soon have some visa visa giftcards for sale and some paysafecards(i already have them for over 1 year).
Can someone give me few shares of a bitcoin? i`m excited to have something inside my wallet. it shows zero right now lol :)Who gives me anything i`ll give him someday double Smiley . I dont want 1 bitcoin..i want something...to have something there..and i want only 1 person to send. this is not to be rich..or anything..just want to have something inside lol Smiley i think i`m going crazy

1MH8ior2ERF4sv2CLRsXm3WkBfp8eJLhET

That's because the blockchain is long and heavy. Your clients needs to verify each transaction on it. It takes long, and it will take longer with time.

It took me a full week to synchronize the blockchain.

If you need/want to start operating immediately with bitcoins I would suggest the blockchain.info ewallet. It will be set up in seconds, and security-wise you should be OK with a few coins for day-by-day expenses.

If you want to have a big balance on a secure savings wallet very fast, I would suggest creating a paper wallet offline with this web: https://www.bitaddress.org/
