Someone was botting to manipulate some dumb altcoin poll. Around 12k accounts were deleted, which why there's a large discrepancy in userid numbers vs registered users.

Holy crap. Someone must've REALLY wanted to affect those poll results. Imagine if he had manually created them all, haha. Yay for more registered users!

12 thousand? wow. For some reason it does not surprise me that someone was trying to manipulate altcoins

Why were the accounts not simply banned/nuked?

Has anybody ever plotted new member growth against btc price? Is thre a correlation?

Guess not.
But the number of bitcointalk new members is readily available on https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=stats, it should be very easy to create the plot.

Speaking of the new members stats, any idea why there are so many members in Mar 8 - Mar 10, 2014?
I assume they are created by bot, but did something special happen during that 3 days?

Don't know for sure, but it could be related to some signature campaign, or someone creating accounts to sell later. Then again, bitcoin's price was going up towards $700 at that time if I'm not mistaken, so that could have helped.

About 20% of all those accounts are probably banned because of spamming & other malicious activities.

Less than that, then again it might be a significant percentage from the last two years
Older accounts possibly joined then forgot their password etc or didn't have a PGP address they could sign with.
Of course theirs inactivity and forgetting accounts still should be closer to 3% on just banning by my guesstimate.

$500,000 a month from managing forums? That'd be amazing, if that's true. Don't think that's realistic though

Where did you find that number?

BitCoin Seller's post? haha. I don't see how they could be making a tenth of that, let alone 500k

According to https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/forum-finances-780707, the forum has a total income of $285407 in 2013, and an income of 522 btc for Jan-Sept 2014. Smiley

That's impressive, but the other guy said $500,000 a month haha; $6000000 is quite a bit different from $300000... Six figs is great for managing a forum tho. Very impressed

I think around 20% of the community could be considered active. This tends to be around the same for most of the good forums, I feel.

Well you don't know that. They just may be inactive from other reasons. Spammers are maybe like  5% top.

Spammers are only 5%? They can create new accounts specifically intended to spam more haha...pretty sure they compose more than 5% of the community
