In fact, there is a perverse incentive for other miners not in the pool to attack slush's server to increase their payout .... just saying.
Attacking pool will not increase their payout in any way except for lowering difficulty level if people from the pool won't crunch solo.

Having such a large percentage of the mining capacity in one pool will be problematic.

Essentially that resource has been centralised so the P2P decentralisation and robustness has been lost for that portion. If slush's servers go down it will take some time for those miners to switch back to solo and the network will be 20-25% down on compute power in the mean time. In fact, there is a perverse incentive for other miners not in the pool to attack slush's server to increase their payout .... just saying.

This morning i noticed that sum of last rows in "duration" column shows 5 hours more than time passed according to "block found" column. How this can happen ?

One line shows real time and second line shows sum of durations, they are not equal anymore...

Yes somethings up "Block Found 2011-02-14 at 03:50:34 next block found 2011-02-14 at 03:52:46 with duration of 17 minutes 12 seconds when it's really 2 minutes difference.  Furthermore my total reward went down about 2 coins out of no where that's confirmed and unconfirmed and I wasn't near my payout I set minimum of 5 and it's less then a coin.  Something up

Edit: server went down for like 5 seconds now my 2 coins are back if something doesn't get explained soon I'm going to solo until cleared up.

I just have a question regarding solved blocks. If a person's miner is active are they ensured to at least receive some sort of reward? My miner is currently GPU mining all night with your service and I noticed the odd reward where it says "None" even though my miner is active. i.e solved block #1003 to #1012 I'm reward, #1013 no reward, #1014 to 1017 reward, #1018 no reward. I did noticed in the case of #1018 the number of shares is very low, does that just mean I didn't receive a getwork for that block and therefore didn't participate? Is this intended behaviour?

Didn't participate, or the block was found before you successfully generated a proof of work.

I'd need to sit down and do the math, but there is still a nontrivial amount of "luck" involved, and that the slush pool seems to constitute a substantial fraction of the global mining pool has, I suspect, led to smaller miners having trouble keeping up enough to reliably get shares.

I've wondered if splitting it into coarsely-balanced sub-pools might lead to less jaggedness in the profile.

It seems the server goes down every now and then for like 30 seconds to a minute at a time.  Is getting overloaded? I see you went from like 20 GH/s to like 50GH/s so I'm guessing that's it.

If you received no rewards despite having your miner running at that time, it is mostly likely because you produced no proof of work during that period. Proof of work is successes at an artificially low difficulty. A block solution will also qualify as proof of work.

Thanks for offering a great service and I agree donations should be enforced.

The workers table columns are messed up.

Typo, fixed.

(This is exactly the reason why I don't want to make big changes from Internet cafe)

"My Account" page started messing up for me last night. The workers table columns are messed up.

the "score" column has the "last share at" value, the "last share at" has the "action" column, and the "score" value doesn't display any more.

Same with me

CPU miners are urged to upgrade to cpuminer version 0.7 (link).

Hopefully this version will reduce the load on slush's server -- and speed up cpuminer's "getwork" turnaround time for users.  Win-Win.

See the release announcement for other details.

i was wondering what kind of payout i can expect with 320000 khash/s and how ofter this pool finds a block

You will get around 10 BTC daily (estimated)
Pool is actually finding 30 to 35 blocks daily (and rising).

I've seen:

2011-02-13 03:21:33 Found Hash!
Sending to server: {"method":"getwork","params":["*censored*"],"id":1}
Server sent: {"result": true, "id": "1", "error": null}

About 5 times this hour... does that mean I found the winning hashes for 5 blocks?
eg: made the pool 5*50=250 bitcoins? :-O

No, that means you've found 5 shares. It's possible one of those could have been the hash that solved the block, but it's not likely. That means you'll be paid (Shares You've Submitted) / (Total # of Shares) percent of 50 BTC.

Example:

10000 Shares are contributed to the pool in a round, by everyone.
5 of those shares are yours (0.005%)
You receive 0.02 bitcoins as a payment when that block is confirmed.

I think slush has done a great job getting the pool up and running but it is now fee-based and not donation-based.

(A 2% minimum donation is no longer a donation but now a fee since it is compulsory).

People who think they should get services for nothing should wake up to the real world, bitcoins are not free to create that's why they are worth something.

Slush is providing a valuable service and is well within his rights to charge for it, I hope he gets rich.

If you can do better set up another pool and run it for donations or fees or however you like.

First off, he said it's a temporary solution so that he doesn't have to pay out of his pocket for you to be able to mine.  If you don't like it, mine on your own, or set up your own server.  I was a leecher too, and wasn't thrilled when all my clients went dead this morning, but he has expenses, and they weren't being covered.  Just be happy he didn't pull the plug.  It's people like you that expect others to provide them everything for free that are the real idiots.  It's not free for him.

If he pulled the plug then he would not make $$ off u and I.

It's ppl like you who assume. I did state I may as well use my own client and start my own server. Learn to read.

Everyone makes some assumptions, you have to in order to live in this world.  It's just that some assumptions are better than others Wink.  I can read by the way, it's just I see complaining, but I don't see you running a pool.  I'm all for it, I might even mine with you, but until you have your own pool please don't make personal attacks on the operator of the main pool we do have.  Oh, and if he pulled the plug, I'd just mine on my own... I've got 160khash right now, and in a week I'll be pushing 700.  Bottom line, it's your choice to use it or not.  Nothing is "forced."  But if you do want to use it, for the time being you will have to contribute back to the person who has put in the work to set this up for all of us.  I'm sorry for the personal attack on you, unnecessarily foul language kind of irks me.  Please let us know when you have your pool running.  If he is making money off us, then there should be some headroom for a competitor.

I'm donating 6% since 94% of something is more than 100% of nothing. My laptop would take a year (365 days) to mine a single block of 50 btc so my current rate of 0.1btc / day is much preferred.

I'd rather pay 6% than having the pool go away.

Ah, and I'm a really poor little miner with a total amount of 2btc in my wallet...

I disagree with forced donations, but only due to the fact that I can't see the shares I'm contributing for the round, or the results of the rounds as they happen. The flipside to slush removing those statistics to prevent possible cheating, is that it creates a requirement of trust to him from every miner involved, without really giving us any indication that he is not "skimming off the top" as has been mentioned.

I'm not pointing any fingers at slush here, and I don't think he is cheating any of us, so don't take it the wrong way here. I'm simply saying that, without any way to verify my own earnings, I have no clue if something has been modified on the server end, or if anything is being altered in the time it takes solved blocks to appear on the statistics page. I have no way to verify (even for peace of mind, as I'm sure all numbers could be faked) that the pool actually did double it's speed/capacity nearly overnight, and I have no way to verify that I'm not being cheated.

Having those uncertainties, coupled with forced donations (even in subcent values) puts a very bad taste in my mouth. I'd be happy to donate and do it all day long if I had some statistics that I could base my payouts on, but I don't. Likewise, from my understanding (and please correct me if I'm wrong) slush is already keeping the block transaction fees for himself. So as the pool becomes more active, and solves blocks faster, he's making more BTC... and if he isn't, he should be.
