So another day another hack / data dump.

https://cointelegraph.com/news/400m-twitter-users-data-is-reportedly-on-sale-in-the-black-market

This one is just more impressive due to its size. And with everyone tweeting about every crypto things I am sure there is a ton of good data about people BTC use and everything else.
Lots of good targeted spam / scams / attacks coming against people who were tweeting about their crypto holdings and use.

This is really disturbing, 400M users of twitter accounts are being sold with email and phone numbers. The question is how much is sold per account on twitter? if that's 400M users, let's just say 5$ per account is the big amount.

It's so scary to use twitter today, only Elon Musk became the owner of such an incident that immediately happened to be hacked by hackers. But for sure, Musk did it right away.

This kind of stuff is happening all the damn time. Just try & be very vigilant, if anybody calls you from a number you don’t recognise & starts saying you owe money then ignore it. If you get any unsolicited letters requesting similar, ignore it.

There will be a lot of phishing going on, if you’re unlucky enough to be one of the people who had data leaked, you need to stay very alert.

This is more serious than I thought it was.
The fact that it is not only the email but also the phone-numbers of the people are allegedly for sale means the possible buyer could have the chance not only to go for a classic fishing campaign but also more elaborate kinds of attacks like SIM-swap or even go as far as de-anonymize those who are deemed "rich enough" in order to get them to pay through extortion.

I hope this ends up being false, but just in case, I recommend anyone reading this to treat your Twitter-linked phone number as compromised and delete it as 2FA on your exchanges and bank accounts, as soon as possible until this gets confirmed or debunked officially.

Merry Christmas

Sure it's a serious case, after all, data is the most expensive and important thing on the internet and I'm sure the person who got all this data and especially the phone number of the users can sell the data for a very good price and can earn huge money from it, also, once again we can see a famous company is under attack by the hackers and they failed to prove enough security to protectthe people information, that's why I always suggest my friend to use fake information in social media.

Just waiting for that to happen. I knew that Twitter would have serious problems after Elon put his hands on it. Perhaps some ex-employees are unhappy with Elon for firing them. This might be the start of the beginning. Elon should've stayed with rockets and aliens.

I don't have a Twitter account, and I think if I need one in the future I would probably make a fake profile.

It's like these potential attacks may happen sooner from these obtained data if ever there will be groups that will purchase the data, well, that's for sure that there will be those people that certainly going to buy it.

Since we are in a bear market and prices are low, will adversaries act sooner to try and steal peoples funds?
That's what I am thinking, it's like that they're on the refueling phase and we may see them move when the market's ripe again.

Not surprising and its not something new honestly and this is why its not really that recommendable whenever you do make out some mentions nor making up discussion about crypto or other assets on social media
or something similar. 400M Twitters users data isnt something small and not shocking on where these data would be used on. Lots of stuffs been sale on BM
which it isnt really that limited to this.If you are really that mindful about privacy then you should always consider on making some actions which would be avoiding you this.
Email spams and scams are something next in line.

And so expect a lot of scams in the following months if this data goes to the wrong hand. And it seems they are also toying with Elon Musk, asking him 276 million in return, sort of ransom and if he pays, they are allegedly going to delete the data (but I doubt both parties are going to do it).

I suspect that the hack though happen prior to Elon taking over Twitter, and perhaps the cyber criminals again, wants to troll Elon Musk for releasing his supposedly hack accounts and sell it and have someone independently verify at least 1000 accounts, to look like the data is real.

Definitely. It'll be funny to watch phishing tweets across my feed for a while. I might delete my Twitter account before that happens though.  Roll Eyes

Musk buys twitter -> Twitter gets hacked. Coincidence? I don't think so. Either some ex-employee decided to screw Musk over, or Musk's incompetent and harmful management resulted in this. And by bet is one the latter, because Musk fired a lot of workers, made absurd statements about the inner workings of Twitter, demands long work hours from the employees who remained, made a lot of stupid changes and so on.

He's a great example why we shouldn't worship any supposed billionaire geniuses, and that just because someone is rich, doesn't make them smart. Although this was clear to at least some part of Bitcoin community when he started attacking Bitcoin in 2021

Elon Musk reduce Twitter workers to almost half of the works before he takeover, I hope this is not the work of one of the workers that were affected. But, anyone on social media should know there is nothing private about them and that their data can be leaked.

This is harmful to us. Scammers frequently use leaked data to send Phishing links. We need to be cautious and save our money.
I do not see how this is harmful to you because you know how to avoid phishing attack, but harmful to many people on Twitter because they do not know about phishing attack, some will be scammed before they learn.

We can't say for sure if this is an inside job but later on, once the dust settles, we will know the reason why those data got leaked.
I am not a regular twitter user, but I have account. So for twitter users, make sure to check possible phishing emails from your registered accts.
Also, for those who have knowledge about phishing attacks, they should be very careful on this fraudulent move.
I can agree that maybe most Twitter users don't know this, but anyone should look out for themselves especially if you are a social media user.

It wouldn't surprise me to know that the suppliers of such data onto the black market "could" be any of those former employees that were dismissed unfairly, and are trying to get back at Musk the Hard way in spite having other avenues to voice their displeasure like suing the company...Before this gets worse, Musk should step down as CEO and let some else be the face of the company.
This is a possibility that cannot be discarded as there are a lot of former employees that are mad with him and how he is managing the company, still assuming this is the case this is a very low move, because even if I also think the way Elon is conducting himself leaves a lot to be desired, this is not an excuse to affect so many Twitter users.

After all not only they are losing some of their personal data, it is possible this will lead to a significant financial loss on the future as well.

I rarely use Twitter. When I opened my inbox, I noticed a large number of spam messages. Some of the links were new to me. So, yes, we will receive massive DM as a result of leaked data, similar to email spam. This is harmful to us. Scammers frequently use leaked data to send Phishing links. We need to be cautious and save our money.

Wow, didn't know this thing.  I just want to make Twitter a an open field of ideas and words, I just hope that there will be no issues with Elon employees, it could be a problem once he will remove the rest of the group. I need to be more vigilant now and be careful since we don't want ourselves to be caught and use our identity somewhere else. Kinda alarming for me.

Reason why it is better to use a fake profile for most if not all social media accounts, good thing I don't register on any social media with my real details.
And how can this happen under the watch of the great Elon Musk? lol, I guess he is leaning the hard way, am sure this will increase trust from all the users of Twitter, seems like all the disgruntled ex-employees are making a move  Cheesy
I deeply regret this case, but I don't think it's a surprise either. In the past year, there have been many similar cases that have become a trend in my country where someone will sell people's personal data on the black market, even state officials' data is in it. Regarding Twitter, I think the seller has had the data for a long time and is only now willing to sell it.

Of course I really have to be careful about this case, even if I haven't used Twitter much longer than now. Online platform security is inherently bad, we should avoid it as much as possible.

Would not that be professional suicide to them? Not even mentioning the fact they could get sued and imprisoned if caught.
I have a friend which works on the technological sector and he told me companies take information leaks very seriously, to the point they let their employers to know they are not supposed to talk about anything going on within the company which is considered to be privileged information.

For now I doubt this was made by former Twitter employees themselves.
Perhaps they disclosed the vulnerability while anonymous but did not act beyond that, so they can deny their part.

I also suspected this possibility at first. Musk has certainly gone overboard with the way Twitter is taking over, at moments perhaps even humiliating according to the previous structure of employees. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was a reaction to the entire process of change.
Musk certainly deserved a punch in the face, but not over the user's back.
