how many posts do I have to make before I can send private messages?
I think it is good idea to have more then 4 post. It makes you to read content (4 h) and it you can found something really interesting it will hold you here more time.
The entire Speculation section is quite addictive/interesting.
Unfortunately, it's not very helpful.

somehow this system is great to keep the trash out of the forum, but on the other hand, users like me, who were reading posts in an unregistered status need to wait before they can post anything and start to bid on auctions or reply to interesting threads 
Have you tried turning it on and off again?

I bet this site uses a cronjob to handle all user upgrades and such, would be on a timer, ie.. every 15 mins or such..
