I posted it that thread too mprep Grin

I think everybody understands now, no need to take further action against anybody else in that thread. Unless theymos is willing to unban us then I guess the matter is closed.

The other thread was giving away bitcoin too I think so wasn’t technically breaking any rules.

Thanks.
Should any bans be issued for participating in that giveaway, I'd exclude any users already banned for this one as well those who applied while Bitcoin was being given away.

I usually ban users who participate in on-forum altcoin giveaways for 14 days. Considering that the thread was wrongfully posted in Games and Rounds (which doesn't change the fact that it's still against the rules), I can understand the ignorance of the rules related to the altcoin section but I cannot excuse it - hence a reduced ban duration for all participants. Unless there are circumstances I'm not aware of that would make this behavior not against (the spirit of) the rules, I do not intend to change my decision.

You are completely free to appeal it to theymos though, who can then decide whether the ban should be lifted either due you not breaking the forum's rules (and my interpretation of them being wrong) or if he decides that due to your contributions / history / etc. a ban isn't needed (since I'm not the policy maker on Bitcointalk, I don't feel comfortable making that decision).

<...>

Why not just delete the thread, a ban is too harsh imo. Can this be reversed?

There were loads of people posting in that thread. I hope I’m not the only one who got banned.

-img snip-
Everyone who participated got banned for 7 days. The creator of the giveaway was banned for 30 days. Banning both the giveaway organizer and any participants is standard practice, meant to harshly discourage participation in such topics.

<...>
Since when are you getting banned when taking part in a giveaway? I didnt spam, pm or do anything else.
From my experience, without banning participants, the ban on on-forum altcoin giveaways is essentially ineffective since one can run such giveaways using disposable accounts.

Spending countless hours in this forum, doing a lot for the community as well as trying to help whenever possible and then getting banned for 7 days for such a reason?
Rules apply to everyone. Whether your contributions excuse the offense is for theymos to decide. I try to avoid making subjective judgments in my moderation wherever possible and would rather delegate it to someone who has the final word on everything Bitcointalk, the head admin.

Thanks suchmoon!

Also I just noticed this ‘giveaway/competition’ thread ran for over a month. It was also in Games & Rounds but nobody got banned.

Where’s the consistency?
The (now trashed) thread in question was reported by a user. I've trashed the linked thread as well. Will wait on issuing bans until this situation gets resolved.

They're probably lucky they weren't temp banned a little closer to the end of the month when the DT1 voting eligibility criteria is in play - it could shake up the landscape quite a bit for a month depending on the participants temp banned.

(Not that we're trying to sound like commercials for the site mind you) Hopefully suchmoon doesn't have his hand on the "Nuke" button...  Grin

Sorry LFC_Bitcoin_ban if we are slightly derailing the thread - but it's OT as it's another giveaway thread.

Now you mentioned it, both of us are wearing the same signature. Oh noes Cheesy

But yeah suchmoon, we're not promoting the thread in any way. Just to clarify matters.

Altcoin giveaways are banned. Is it an altcoin giveaway?

Nope, it's Bitcoin. Basically if your balance on 777 is empty, you could post in that thread to get it replenished.

if giveaways are banned why hasn't it been?

Altcoin giveaways are banned. Is it an altcoin giveaway?

To be honest I've never looked - there's three or four threads for the 777Coin/Casino I've posted in the related SigCamp thread and I don't recall ever posting in that linked above thread (feel free to prove me wrong) - I think you get a credit at the Casino after posting your username details??  (Don't shoot the messenger)

Honestly speaking, that thread serves no purpose other than those posters fulfilling their quota. The admin doesn't replenish the balance at all, despite the opposite being mentioned on the 777 site.

Even before I signed up for a SigCamp I was surprised at the sheer number of mindless posters who participate in campaigns.  Having to scroll through the campaigns' [ANN] threads II've found is even worse as there are many many people who just don't know what [CLOSED] [CFNP] [HALTED] [SUSPENDED] means - they still try to sign up.

Which leads me into this question:

This thread: █ ★☆★777Coin★☆★ █ ✔ Full Range of Games ✔ Instant Withdraw ✔ Free mBTC! seems to have been giving away funds for the last six years - if giveaways are banned why hasn't it been?  (and yes, I may be bighting the hand that feeds me, but if one is out, then all are out, otherwise LFC_Bitcoin and co should NOT have been banned!)

- take the opportunity to go outside
Lol that's just mean!

Well... of course one should comply with the laws and rules and edicts currently in place (you'd think someone banned for not following rules doesn't need to be reminded of that) so if there is a curfew and armed forces on the streets then maybe don't go outside. But most places still allow responsible enjoyment of outdoors, use the chance while you still can is what I'm saying.

Where’s the consistency?

What yahoo62278 said... not everything gets noticed and it's up to each of us to ensure the consistency, i.e. report rule violations to mods, or in this case perhaps someone could have warned bitcasino.io that this is not allowed and the whole thing could have been avoided. At the end of the day, it's the campaign/giveaway managers who should be responsible for knowing the rules and not putting their participants at risk of getting banned.

...

I would have thought banning the convenor of the competition or as you suggest deleting the thread would have been a more appropriate course of action - am sorry the mods have been so draconian with you.  (they can be a very targeted group when they want to be)

...

Most giveaway threads are no longer allowed in the Alternate cryptocurrencies sections.......Similar threads are already restricted to Games and Rounds in the non-altcoin sections.....

The thread was in Games & Rounds.

It wasn’t in the Alt Sub.

Which leads me into this question:

While I do think mass bans are a bit too harsh for this, particularly for a first offense...

  • I'm getting a feeling that some here think the ban is unfair because of who was banned (well known users). That shouldn't matter. If anything, being forum veterans you should be expected to lead by example as far as following rules and shit.
  • I find it quite ironic that some die-hard bitcoiners got banned for shitcoining.

I hope y'all get unbanned but if not - take the opportunity to go outside, I'm hearing good things about it. It's just 7 days. Will be over in no time (in 7 days to be more precise).
Glad I read comments, I was just about to say something close to what you just posted. Although I think the ban should be limited to the user that posted the thread, not the users who posted thinking it was legit.

Thanks suchmoon!

It may not have been reported to the mods. I would venture to guess someone reported the particular giveaway you participated in.

It would have been a good idea to warn said members before banning them.
But maybe this giveaway thing is a very sensitive topic for the mod(s).
Hard to tell, when no exchange of communication with the mod in charge is possible...

Damn, the forum is really taking this quarantine thing seriously.

Really, its dumb to temp ban the participants of a giveaway thread in Games & Rounds, or anywhere for that matter. The mod should just delete the thread and temp ban the thread creator.

It seems like a very strange move on your sig campaign's part to ask members to do something like this. Was it a polite request or was there some implied pressure? I'd refuse to do it simply because I don't want my unread replies bit polluted.

Knowing jeremypwr it was probably just a polite notification that there was a contest was going on.
