I wonder how much death, rape, abuse and horror Windows has enabled over the years. Probably rather a lot of it. Does it mean Windows is evil? It probably is but for reasons other than that.

Bill's fortune is in dollars, his trade was creating and controlling markets, his calling is to cure the world.

All of those things point to a fondness for paternalism which is the antithesis of what BTC is about.

Bill Gates is FUDing bitcoin, just like he did with Google : he refused to buy the Google project because he thought it had no future.

And do you remember his skeptiscism about the Internet?

Well it looks like Billy Boy is the perfect counter indicator. Cheesy
Whatever he has to say about new technologies, do the exact opposite and you'll do great.
Especially in the long term as he absolute isn't a guy with a vision.
Never was an admirer of him or his company.
That guy is just another tech monopolist who wants to control and rule over others.

You never trust a single party when evaluating your investments. I've had multiple trustworthy friends that told me that BTC is a ponzi, I researched and I found it absurd. They missed out on profits by going with the popular opinion. If you don't realize this, you will too.

That's why it's better to do your own research before jumping to conclusion because you'll never what's true if you don't do anything. Some are to just misleading people so they can benefited to it later on and that's why FUDing was born.

And whatever these known people will say it's all up to us whether to believe it or just let it pass to our ears. The one who'll easily believe to them without doing nothing will be regretful sooner.

Bill Gates did said something about cryptocurrency that we can't accept but you are basing your point on what happened oppositely.
Whether Bill Gates will say something about bitcoin or crypto's again, I'm very optimistic on it.
He's like the first ones who said FUD about bitcoin so look at the impact now, price is moving up.

Hey, we do not know what he's thinking when he made those comments on reddit ama.

His only argument is apparently the decentralization and anonymization of payments is detrimental, because of the fact that they are being used on the dark web. But are people really going to stop using fentanyl just because there is no bitcoin? I don't think so.

Even if they do, that's their choice. It has nothing to do with bitcoin as a currency.

I think that he is making some uninformed arguments, that is all.

I personally think bill gates gave somekinda default liberal reaction: "if it is using by liberals so it might be dangerous". I am quite sure he already uses some of these crypto currencies but don't trust em that much.

Gates is not trying to buy bitcoin, he is already rich beyond belief. I think he is genuinely trying to FUD because he believes that Bitcoin will fail. I can't count the times where someone famous and 'knowledgeable' was trying to discredit cryptocurrency. Honestly, people linked to old establishment are not reliable source of facts about Bitcoin.

The man belongs to the generation which is holding to their traditional view of many things and we have to give him the privilege to say whatever he wanted to say without necessarily following his ideas and opinions especially on something new like cryptocurrency. Bill Gates is not the expert or the man to-go-to when it comes to cryptocurrency so his own opinion on anything is as good as yours and mine. Besides, he is not a god that can predict with 100% accuracy what can happen into the future.

like always people are making this bigger than it deserves to be. what Bill Gates said was more like a random thought among a lot of other things and like always the news loves these things and only highlights them out of context and then everyone starts repeating them.

and to be fair you should never buy bitcoin based on these things. you either understand bitcoin and see its potential and then buy or you don't see it and you should stay away from bitcoin let those who see the potential enjoy being the "new wealthy elite" because they took the leap of faith and became early adopters.

I mean, he's right about the speculative ICO bubble.

Even though the points he mentions has some sense to them, I think he fails to give the average Joe reading the article who knows nohting about bitcoin a chance to decide for themselves. He basically fails to mention any of the positives bitcoin bring, such as decentralisation which many legitimate people on this forum love bitcoin for.

At the end of the day, he's not going to be the one affecting bitcoin price. Doesn't mean that it's definitely going up because he said what he said either.

Honestly, people linked to old establishment are not reliable source of facts about Bitcoin.

On the contrary, he may be saying this to try and drag back down the price of btc so he can get in at a much lower rate. Even for people with gates' stature, he'd still wish to buy in a lower price to maximize profit. I think he sees btc's potential already and is seriously considering crypto.

He may. But does his opinion really count towards anything in the market? I think that he is probably genuinely trying to warn people about bitcoin's negatives. Which there are many. But I think the positives that bitcoin bring grossly outweigh the negatives here.

If I can remember, he told that bitcoin will be great in the future before. But I can't remember on when exactly he did said this, I just watched that video on youtube when he was interviewed but I can't find it anymore.
I think we just have to accept that the older traditional elite will never fully understand Bitcoin
+1 on this, I saw this on Warren Buffett.

this would have been true only if he wasn't praising bitcoin before! this news is a complete 180 degree change.

Well, as far as I can remember, in a nutshell, he initially praised Bitcoin for its potential for money transfers, and how that could be useful for the developing world. He didn't reverse this position at all during the AMA. He simply went overboard and said that crypto is being used to buy fentanyl, etc. which makes it directly responsible for some deaths. He also knocked it for its "focus on anonymity", which, I would say, is an indication that he knows little about the technology.

Either way, his statements fit together; you can embrace one aspect and dislike another. It's not like his opinions matter anyway.

and lets not forget that the "praise" was a real quote from himself talking about bitcoin and how it is a good thing, and this new thing about how "bitcoin is killing people" is just a random comment on Reddit from his IAMA. so who knows who was answering the questions on reddit on his behalf. even if he was answering himself he might have meant the FUD because Microsoft is going to release a cryptocurrency! that wouldn't be the first time someone chose this method...

First, it was Steve Wozniak saying that bitcoin is a scam because he lost it to someone. Lol.

The Bill Gates starts to attack bitcoin.

Coincidence?

Or are they just trying to pull the price down so that they can buy at cheap price just like we always wanted. But the thing is that this two has billions of dollars that they can burn. And a pullback will get them in a better opportunity to buy at a discount and stash it in their wallet and accumulate overtime.

But I'm pretty disappointed with Bill Gates though, how does a titan like him doesn't appreciate what bitcoin can bring to the people? I thought he is anti-poor, but attacking bitcoin doesn't look good at his image in my opinion.

It doesn't mean anything. Bitcoin will go up regardless of what people are saying or thinking. It has been like that for years now, and that continuously. You are just trying to connect dots that can't be connected at all.

Bill Gates shared his opinion, which honestly speaking wasn't all that negative. People here tend to exaggerate everything when it comes to high level figures speaking out in a way that doesn't match their way of thinking.

Whatever his motivation was to speak out like that, it doesn't and shouldn't concern anyone here. We have seen other high level figures actually trying to tarnish Bitcoin's public image, which is far worse........

I don't consider this to fit in the category of fud -- to me it looks like a pure form of ignorance

I agree with richards. It's more about ignorance than FUD.

Ignorance they say, sure, one of the masterminds behind the most famous OS in the world simply lacks knowledge about the blockchain and cryptocurrencies, both that have been around for years now...but let's say that's true, he's ignorant (tbf, he said "the main feature of cryptos is anonymity", so there's that), then, is he only repeating what he read on the media? if that was his only source of information about cryptocurrencies then he could've kept his mouth shut and address his concerns to other people.

Also, you guys call him ignorant, I'd call him a hypocrite: https://ripple.com/insights/news/ripple-the-gates-foundation-team-up-to-level-the-economic-playing-field-for-the-poor/
And they also support Factom, a blockchain techonology used by the Gates Foundation and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (no wonder Bill was so worried about anonymity)

Let's be honest, he had an agenda (he even used the same old drug argument we see on the news all the time), someone asked him about cryptocurrencies and he immediately started spreading negative information rather than the good use cases of cryptocurrencies or the technology behid them, he knows he can influence public opinion, and one way or another, what he said could change the perception of the average joe about cryptocurrencies and ultimately scare people away. FUD or not, what he said wasn't because of ignorance.

He's FUDing Bitcoin now... in 2015 his opinion was at 180o. Back then he said something like that Bitcoin have a great future and we must accelerate the Bitcoin revolution and acceptance.

I agree with richards. It's more about ignorance than FUD. Can you give at least one reason on why Bill Gates would try to "destroy" cryptocurrencies? People seriously need to stop with the "he just wants to buy cheap" conspiracy theories whenever someone says something bad about Bitcoin and/or cryptos. Let's not start hating him because he's not part of our "group".

About Gates saying that cryptocurrencies are bad because they facilitate laundering and terrorist funding: New Research: Laundering of Illicit Funds Less than 1% of Bitcoin Transactions

I don't consider this to fit in the category of fud -- to me it looks like a pure form of ignorance, which is something more high level entities seem to suffer from when it comes to crypto in general. I think we just have to accept that the older traditional elite will never fully understand Bitcoin, because for them it doesn't add anything of value to their life. It's safe to say that if we were standing in their position, we wouldn't have much to complain about either, and have not much left to strive for. Regardless of Bill's ignorance, I respect him a lot, because he has been very important to the world with everything he did in his life, which can't be said about old fart Warren Buffett.

We all have our opinions, so does Bill Gates. He made enough money for several life's, but that doesn't give him some power to predict future with 100% certainty. He could be right about this, or he could be wrong... that is his opinion. At the end it all comes to what you believe and nothing more.
Time of regulations is coming, but before that, price of bitcoin could go up a bit more. But honestly, I don't think this is the right time for buying.
