you do realize that even crypto coins, like stocks and bonds in the traditional financial markets, can go to ZERO in value for any number of reasons.... something better comes along, a more competitive idea etc...   i'm just saying, keep that in mind.... the value of cryptocoins is only as good as people's opinion of it... and there may be many cryptocoins that succeed for a while, then fail.... nothing wrong with that, that's life... just don't be the last one standing when the music stops for one "coin" or another....  that's why most of the traditional financial markets advise people to diversify, and i think it's good advice for trading cryptocoins too.... 5 years from now, half of the cryptocurrencies may be gone, only to be replaced by twice as many that have better security and stability....

From what I can tell I'm uncertain about peercoin.  I've seen it stay at a fairly similar price for a while.  So perhaps it's stable, but...when it comes to the coin market not much seems to stay very stable for very long.  So, it could jump up, or maybe it'll tank.  Just look at the charts, do some research, and make an informed decision based on your own understanding rather than what people tell you.  I see people saying "This coin to the moon" over and over again...but it doesn't always happen as they predict.
peercoin is a good coin.

Alt coins are great In my mind anyways.   Easy to mine and fun to trade.   The way I look at it but it's cheaper then gambling in Vegas  ;

seems alt coins take on a new role often. most recent adaption has been their ability to gain mainstream attention. just look at doge and now coinye. great leverage-er

i've been looking at devcoins.... they have an interesting idea behind them.... not interested in mining them, but earning them by writing articles and such... also opened an account on an exchange, because i thought it would be an interesting idea to "day trade" altcoins, such as using some of the bitcoin i already have, buy some other altcoin when it's near the bottom of it's trading range, wait for it to go near the top of it's trading range, and sell..... repeat as often as necessary to make some profit.....

Bitcoins have now primarily moved to -> ASIC's = Power sippers
Altcoins (mostly scrypt based) are still on -> CPU's / GPU's = Power hungry

I never realized how much easier it is to mine new alt coints until I tried yesterday to mine Coinye coins.

My computer doesn't have good Graphics Card for mining and I knew it is just waste of time to try to mine bitcoin so I tried litecoin instead. It takes me 3 days to earn 0.01. Then yesterday I started to mine Coinye coins, I managed to get more than 2500.

Only problem now is that I don't know what to do with them  Smiley

does mining altcoins differ from mining bitcoins in terms of power usage? that's the main reason i've steered clear of mining, don't want to end up with a crazy power bill  Huh
thx for the info

With a large emergence of altcoins coming onto the scene, what effect could this have on the overall crypto currency market? I could imagine it to be an overall positive experience with the crapcoins being weeded out by the true game changers. At this time it just feels like the 90's all over with a bunch of shit popping up on the crypto scene, and greedy whores buying into it because money is involved. Why should a joke coin like dogecoin / coinye take off when all it's meant for is a laugh?

Most altcoins are trash, since they don't introduce anything new or are just made for quick pump and dump profit. However, few which expands the usability and functionality are fine. Personally I prefer scrypt altcoins even though asics are on their way.

Well, not all of them... you can make serious money trading them...

For people saying alt-coins are pointless, I have to disagree (although surely there are some coins created with the intention of pump and dump). I think the value in alt-coins is attracting new people to cryptocurrency which helps increase acceptance and awareness of all cryptocurrency, thereby legitimizing it; however, it would be nice to see more alt-coins that look to improve upon the formula rather than simply copy Litecoin and Bitcoin.
